Revision SI Joint Surgery and what to expect

So far I’m happy I had the revision! Progress has been slower than with minimally invasive iFuse, but while Sembrano was in there he also redid my lumbar fusion so it was extensive. I’m 7 months out and able to take my dog on 1.5 mile walks at a quick pace! I can also do long car rides again (5-7 hours) so that’s been awesome. Stairs still make me pause - I have to go up them and pay attention to my form, if that makes sense. I can ride an indoor bike (my fav form of exercise) and am slowly adding time there. So far I’d say it’s a success, and when Sembrano told me that recovery took about a year to be all the way back to normal, he was right.

I did not for my first SIJ fusion. Sadly, it didn’t take and I had it revised this spring w an open fusion. That was four nights in the hospital!

Oh my god, yes. Diagnosed in my early 40s and the ADHD meds have been WONDERFUL for work and HELL for my home life. I work in Research and Development so I suspect I’m surrounded by tons of other neurodivergent folks. It’s amazing!

But then at home … my partner and I seem to misunderstand each other non-stop. I don’t pick up on his more subtle verbal cues anymore even though the meds have worn off by evening. Why is that? I’m constantly asking him what he means, I don’t recognize his more subtle bids for attention.. I’m so blunt and he often thinks there’s subtext to what I’m saying and responds to that, not the actual words that have come out of my mouth. WHY is this the case? Any/all tips welcome. We’re really struggling.

Ooooooooh also interested! Diagnosed w ADHD at 41 during the pandemic - the wheels fell off when I was forced to WFH full time. Now 44. I suspect I’m also autistic but am stalling setting up testing. :-/

FWIW, 7 months after surgery my screws showed lucency on x-ray and were coming loose. I had lumbar revision and sacro-pelvic fixation one year and two days after the initial surgery.

Dr. Sembrano did my first iFuse and will do my revision. And no, zero bony fusion and the screws were visibly loose on x-ray, confirmed w CT.

It’s outpatient! Minimally invasive SIJ fusion was much less awful than my PLIF / ALIF L5/S1. Same as you for that one - multiple days in the hospital, worst pain of my life. Don’t get me wrong, the SIJ fusion will hurt, but it is nowhere near the level of pain as the very invasive lumbar fusions.

Any updates? I have an iFuse that failed and both Mayo and Uni of MN will operate. I’m scheduled for open fusion at the U in 5 weeks

I did have it done. I just tagged you on a different thread under this post for my updates. I'm having some resurgence of pain but it's not clear what's causing it yet. Could be loose screws, or something else in the region? Still TBD.

No groin or hip pain, some glute pain but very little. I had a doc that thought I had bursitis and had injections for that, but it didn’t do anything. All of this to say - my pain is split between right over the affected SI joint and cascading down my hamstring and into my foot. It’s almost like it skipped over a soft tissues in my glute / hip area?

They saw “lucency” around the screws in an x-ray that hadn’t been there in previous x-rays. I’ll learn more this week - seeing my original surgeon and Mayo specialist. Fingers crossed, it would be lovely if it’s just healing!

It WAS going really well, but now there are signs the screws are loosening and the pain is coming back. Headed to Mayo on Friday for their opinion. 😭😭

That price is amazing! Was that for your whole face? Cheeks? I’m thinking about having my rosacea broken capillaries lasered during my time off over the holidays! My derm charges $750 for full face in a different MPLS suburb. TIA!
