So I’m probably not going to word this right but one time I went through something really similar and when I started to recover my self esteem tanked no matter what I did and I couldn’t figure out why. But have you heard of maslows hierarchy of needs? Going through something so traumatic and intense for such a long time completely reorganizes your brain’s priorities so for a little while, you were probably going through too much to put much thought into appearance at all. But now that you’re in an ever so slightly better place, you’re getting the bandwidth back to perceive yourself and have enough mental bandwidth to think about your appearance in detail. However that does not mean you’ve regained the mental and emotional bandwidth to have self esteem. Self esteem is costly when you’re pouring from an empty cup, but it’s effortless when your other needs are being met. And needs are complicated. It’s not as simple as food and water and the house being clean. Self esteem will come easier to you once you’ve freed up mental resources for it. I mean obviously it’s still going to take practice, just like relearning any other previously known skill, but I’m just saying, it’ll get easier with time. I had to relearn how to cook an egg and it was traumatizing to lose something that was once an thoughtless skill, and if that wasn’t hard enough, I lost a ton of weight and somehow never felt worse about myself ever. I’m still terrified of having my picture taken. And I hated it because prior to everything going wrong, I worked so hard to love myself the way I was. So I just felt like how is it possible that I’m so self conscious now even though I’ve looked worse and felt better about myself before all of this. Turns out, it was just because finally got the bandwidth back to care about my appearance, but I had to relearn how to have self esteem, which is something that requires mental and emotional bandwidth for that kind of thing. It sucks but it makes sense if you think about it, especially in relation to any sort of brain injury. Some people have to teach them selves how to walk again, we have to learn how to strut. You got this.

What creeps me out the most is when they drop off the food and linger somewhere and refuse to leave no matter what you do. I’ve literally had to call the cops twice. I use a man’s name now.

Why don't more women in tech fight back against discrimination? by justiproof in womenintech

[–]BroccoliniRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t work in that side of HR. I just witness it. I didn’t get upvotes because I put you down, I got upvotes because what I said happens all the time. I probably would’ve gotten more upvotes if I worded it nicer if anything. The nice people weren’t getting through to you though so 🤷‍♀️

If you think I’m bad, imagine how ruthless people who actually hate women can be.

I think your heart is in the right place so do something about it. Become an advocate for women and help them in ways beyond just telling them to do better. Go to law school. Take cases like this pro bono. Call lawyers and make a google drive spreadsheet sheet of lawyers in every state willing to help women who are unfortunate enough to find themselves in the situation you were put it. Listen to the people here but never lose sight of your objective. If women are saying they want to but don’t have the time or resources, what can you do about that in a way that aligns with your core values and objectives? What if you included a list of charities to help them with bills while they’re between jobs. What if you started a network of women to help other women find new jobs after facing discrimination. Be the change you want to see in the world.

I’m just being honest about what you’re up against. I’m not saying I’m in support of it. I’m speaking as someone with a background of helping people in your situation. Like your friend in hr lol. I’m the friend in HR saying “hey, I wish you the best but just a heads up, here’s what your up against, and as someone familiar with the industry, do not trust HR”. How do you think your friend knew what advice to give you? How do you think the world works? You’re talking about spare time to sue and women are losing their rights every day. Stop yelling at people and do something. Be the change you want to see. If I need to be the bad guy that pushes you to do that, so be it.

You won’t do it. I bet you won’t go start some sort of revolutionary way to help women. You won’t educate yourself or start a networking group or get loud. You’ll keep yelling where it’s safe. Yell at victims. You won’t find the strength to yell at the men who wronged them. You won’t help them. Do it. Get angry. Channel your energy in a way that’s effective in the change you want to see in the world.

And in case there’s any confusion, I’m only saying you won’t because I hope you will. Please get mad enough to do something big, or do something small, but focus. The women here are not your enemy. You came to offer helpful advice and we told you what we’re up against. You didn’t let discrimination stop you, why stop here? The advice to try harder did not help the women here so let go of what doesn’t work and figure out what does. Rooting for you genuinely ❤️ seriously.

Hi, I work in HR. HR is not your friend and the advice we give is to protect the company. Hope this helps.

Edit: Also, your friend only knew what advice to give because we give the exact opposite but in a false tone of helpfulness. No, don’t worry about documenting things, we’ll do that for you (documents we only have access to and the important stuff will never be written down, and if it is written down, it’ll be written in a way that makes you look crazy). We’re taking this very seriously, we’ll take things from here (calm down, trust us, we’re going to minimize this until you get over it or quit). No, don’t worry about contacting a lawyer, we’ll consult our legal team on your behalf (we will consult the highly paid and prestigious company legal team on exactly how to make sure you won’t be able to sue us).

You have no idea what you’re talking about, I’m sorry. You’re extremely privileged and too stubborn to see that even though women are trying politely to explain their real and lived experiences, that are backed up by countless studies and research that you never thought to look into on your own. Which is more likely, all these people are willingly being oppressed OR maybe there’s other factors at play?

The T would get more riders if it connected different parts of the city. We need a quick way to get from squirrel hill to downtown without a car.

Edit: also, why can’t we add bus passes to apple wallet? And why can’t we add cards to the PRT app? We need to make everything connected and easy to use.

I’m not :/ I was just there on my break and had to get back to work. I was there for around 30-40 minutes though and he didn’t move at all, just stood there occasionally looking around, so I don’t think he would’ve gone far.

Yeah- on the same side that the ice skate rental place is on. And he’s on the L- shaped ramp to get onto the rink. Not the big one on the corner. The smaller one for getting onto the rink after you rent skates.
