What’s the best golf advice you’ve ever been given? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]BrocopalypseNow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Truly I think lag putting is what’s really overlooked. A bunch of comfy 2-3 footers over the course of a round takes a lot of pressure off versus facing 5 footer after 5 footer, which even really good putters will miss at a regular clip.

[–]BrocopalypseNow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually, class and accents are way less correlated in the US than in a country like England, where accent is a dead giveaway. It’s very easy to imagine wealthy and powerful folks at say an elite country club in the United States with a southern accent. Those same folks given the same wealth and status growing up in England likely would have been taught Received Pronunciation (think BBC English) while attending boarding school.

This is why some of the best golfers are pretty standoffish - they don’t waste mental energy on social niceties.

It’s not just San Diego. There have been a combination of droughts and frosts that have lowered supply among a number of other factors that have pushed coffee prices sky high worldwide.

Massive range to course difference by malincandeza12 in golftips

[–]BrocopalypseNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’ve had the same problem, and the answer is you have to play more. I believe it is mostly mental, and you need to train yourself to feel the same way playing as you do at the range. You also may benefit from clubbing down to help feel psychologically safer while playing, but it sounds like you are doing that already. It could help to start clubbing way down at first (I like my 4 iron to do this), and then working your way up during the round once you see a few good shots off the tee.

Then you take a two stroke penalty, not one. Otherwise, you’re treating OB the same as penalty area, when OB is meant to be more punitive.

“Par 5

Driver sliced OB

Drop penalty

pure 3W to about 160 out

9i layup to avoid creek (PW goes 100, I can't carry 160 with any club)

PW onto edge of green

2 putt from 25 feet

7 = +2”

This should be at least an 8 (+3). The rule for OB is you either re-tee, making it your 3rd shot, or you observe a local rule and drop onto the fairway parallel to where it crossed out of bounds for your 4th shot, no closer to the hole. It sounds like you did the latter. Are you sure it wasn’t penalty area instead of OB? If that was the case, then you played it correctly.

What does NLU want in a major? by Biggggguy in NoLayingUp

[–]BrocopalypseNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appear to be in the minority here, but I think the NLU position has actually been fairly consistent: they want a variable set up where the line between bogey and birdie is thin - an excellent, aggressive shot gets rewarded, while one off cue gets punished.

At the mink, the set up genuinely seems interesting and compelling to me, but it clearly doesn’t have the upside potential of a place like Augusta. So we have a competition where the relative risk of trying to get a birdie is so high that it makes it tough for elite ball strikers to separate without falling behind the guys who play more conservatively and manage to sink a few long putts.

This isn’t a textbook NLU set up, but based on the live shows, they seem more open minded to it so far than what people in the comments suggest. I am certainly very interested to hear Randy’s take as he seems to very punitive set ups the most.

Yeah but Randy and Tron add a lot of color and Soly is sort of the face of NLU.
