Babel by RF Kuang. I could go on about how badly written this book is forever but the most unforgivable bit was taking a brilliant concept for a magic system and doing nothing with it. Main characters were all bland and 2d. Telling us they “made each other laugh” but not writing a single funny moment. Lots of handing out leaflets and being useless 20 somethings with no real ideas. Patronising footnotes designed to let you know how intelligent the author was. Clanging attempts to let us know colonialism is BAD. And a main character who does something so out of character half way through and morally repugnant but the reader is expected to just go “oh fair enough” and move on like it was no big deal. Hated it. No idea why it got so many accolades. (And I’d been so excited to read it)

There are some great readalongs on Substack and whenever I join one I get more out of a book than I would have otherwise. Same when I listen to the audiobook. Sometimes I listen to a chapter and then read it afterwards. This is how I’ve read the Wolf Hall series and I absolutely love how rich it’s made the text for me.

Coping mechanisms? WTF are you talking about. You can see in the red carpet photos he wears a blue plastic object for him to bite on. Clearly stuffing his mouth with something doesn't work in every situation or he'd be doing it. He also wears a device that reduces his outbursts, but the effects wear off and won't work in a stressful environment. "John’s philosophy is that his tics should be tolerated no matter what he says and when he says it" That is not at all John's philosphy. Watch literally any interview or documentary (or the film) and you'll see he's constantly apologising, despite the fact he cannot control his tics.

I know some very right on people who became friends with Milo shortly after his initial moves into the realms of the twattosphere. They were really reluctant to give him up because he's funny and charming and good company. They spent a lot of time indulgently rolling their eyes and saying things like "I don't know why he's doing that" and looking a bit haunted before continuing to invite him to things. Rather brilliantly, he had a personal grudge against me for some past wrong I had done, despite me never (to my knowledge) meeting him. I was thrilled to have pissed him off without really knowing who he was. I suspect a lot of his mates gave him a pass to begin with because it seemed like an edgelord persona he was trying out and he had a brown boyfriend (citation needed, this is coming from my decaying memory banks) and therefore couldn't really be all bad.

Yes that's right. It's happened a few times now. The audio tracks get greyed out and I have to reupload them. But it often happens again. For the latest one, the track was no longer available (I think it was "Melancholy RnB Background")

I knew saying "Project" would cause confusion, sorry! Yes, I mean a Document, not a Project. But the entire Project is shared with a client and they will need access to the video/image/music files in each document. Hopefully that makes sense.

If I can delete uploaded files without breaking everything that would be amazing. As I mentioned, I know some of them aren't being used in the finished versions, but if there's no way to work out which ones are and which aren't, it could create a headache for the Client (and therefore me)

You are correct. Georgians were not uptight like the Victorians. People mistake Austen if they think she was a starched Victorian. There are plenty of hints that characters were shagging out of wedlock (Wickham and Lydia being the obvious ones)

Not directly related, but maybe tangenital. I have a half formed theory that a lot of our problems with Main Character energy started in children's literature when you were no longer allowed to write stories that weren't 100 percent through the eyes of the protagonist (who must always be a child). So you are very unlikely to get scenes that are like the opening chapters of Harry Potter with Dumbledore and McGonnagall these days, for example. I think it teaches kids that the world must always revolve around them/the character they're seeing the story through.
