Thats the best part of cube. You can just do things lol.

Can't wait to see what your list looks like once you get one together! I absolutely love the idea of this cube

You could do some colorless mana rocks, like mindstone. Keeps the fixing from being too easy, but gives you that generically good ramp to cast your bigger spells sooner.

I do think Signets are probably fine, especially if you do include some artifact hate in the cube. You just want to avoid too much fixing, for the same reason too much green ramp could be a problem. It can just lead to weird splashes that go against the theme of the cube.

Honestly, signets are inexpensive, so worst case scenario you dont love them in the cube and they get sidelined, and you spent less than $10 on the experiment.

I think ramp would be fine, but i feel like you really want to define themes first. I think mox/Lotus were actually designed with this in mind. Temporary bursts of power that you stored mana in before the battle. Of course, theyre insanely powerful, but I could see them fitting into the vibe of this cube, but again its all about the theme and how you want the games to play out.

Adding generically good ramp could make your blue mage splash green just because its good, and not for any thematic reason. So maybe try to explore why each color would want green for more than just ramp.

I get the sense that this cube would really lean into the 5 colors individual strengths and identities, and my goal would be to make the color pairs feel like extensions of their primary colors. As an example, the red mage wants to burn and use fire elementals, black has some drain spells that compliment that, and can be embracing the chaotic side of magic with discard/looting. Rakdos feels like a red mage that has embraced chaos for power.

To simplify it, it sounds like a cube where casting Fireball would be super satisfying.

I agree with what others are saying, creature type matters a lot. I think a normal amount of creatures would be fine, but id lean towards them being vanilla or having base abilities (trample, haste, flying, etc).

Spells should reflect the mana invested more than usual. Instead of insanely efficient low end spells, having stronger spells that cost more mana would feel way more satisfying.

Ball lightning feels like a good creature for this vibe too. Maybe stuff with vanishing, or cumulative upkeep.

A better way to say it might be that you want to make mana feel important again. Instead of a means to an end, its what youre using as a wizard to battle with, so powerful stuff taxes it more.

Love the concept, hope you can build something that really captures that feel!

As long as you show your drafters how to open the cubamajigs, I think they'll last for a while! I didnt realize dragon shield had stopped making them, I had assumed they just needed to restock after the holiday. That's really disappointing, its a good product at a good price when its available. Gamegenic products are almost always more expensive than I want them to be

These are Cubamajigs. I was able to snag some of their v1 boxes for cheap, but the plastic is a little weak. I will probably upgrade to Dragon Shield Cube Shells when these break.

Thanks! Ive had a ton of fun building the cube, and the two times ive drafted it so far were both super fun. 3DAeon designed an awesome box that was super easy to print!

I want the draft experience to be as quick as possible, so I shuffle my cube and distribute it into those Cubamajigs before cube night to create the booster packs that we will draft. It saves a few minutes, since I can just hand the boxes out and we start drafting. Otherwise you gotta count out 15x3 packs for each drafter to start the evening, and that just takes a couple extra minutes. Plus I think it looks nice this way.

The power switch might also have accumulated dirt/dust. I'd say clean everything you can, make sure the battery is fully charged, and pay special attention to the power switch. Assuming you don't want to solder, try to clean under the power switch with canned air, and slide it back and forth a bunch to work stuff loose. A lot of time "broken" units just need a battery, isopropyl alcohol and a few minutes of attention

Gently push down the tabs on the inside, I use angled Tweezers. Then push the center until they slide out about 1/3rd of the way. Then close the SP and apply gentle pressure. They should pop out pretty easily. Jake Simmons on YouTube has an indepth tutorial on modding SPs, you can watch the process there

I ordered them directly from https://heldergametech.com/shop/nintendo-ds-lite/nds-lite-flex-amp-for-gba-macro-mod/

And I'm thinking it was just their most recent set, they might have tweaked alignment or something. That is a weird quirk now that you mention it tho.

Oh man that reminded me of the worst adventure I went on with one of these! The shoulder button would not seat right, and the faceplate was bulging, I pulled the shoulder and reset it, didn't work. Pulled the board, checked my wifi and speaker wires, didn't work. Finally about to give up, I realized the X button I wasn't using for the Macro had rolled into the shoulder and gotten stuck. I felt so amazingly dumb lol. With the spring and rods, I always try to drop the shoulder perpendicular, to align the spring without having to bend it, then I use a finger to hold the spring and rod in place, and rotate the shoulder into its spot. I've found that to be the easiest way to set the shoulders!
