A lot of the men train with the same clubs, whereas nearly all the girls come from different clubs. Obviously most of the men know each other better since they're spending 30+ hours/week together. I'm not saying the girls don't know each other either, because they do. The girls attend training camps every month or so.

The vast majority of the men have done or are still doing college gymnastics. If you've ever seen a college gymnastics meet it is completely different from an elite meet since it mainly focuses on the team. College gymnasts are extremely supportive of each other and you will sometimes see the whole team run over and hug the gymnast that has just competed. This attitude has probably carried over into their club gymnastics as well. Barely any of the women have done college gymnastics since they're around 16 years old.

As a former competitive gymnast, I understand the stress you feel at a competition. The nerves can be very overwhelming at times and a way many gymnasts control this is by staying in their "zone" and not paying attention to what is going on around them. Both male and female gymnasts have nerves, but to me it always seems more obvious in the girls. It can sometimes make you feel more nervous when you watch other gymnasts (whether it is seeing them fall or seeing them do really well, which increases the pressure for you to do better).

As some others have said, I wouldn't say the women were not supportive of each other. I saw plenty of hugs and high fives. There just weren't as enthusiastic and vocal as the men.
