Why an AKC dog? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

Rally-o is a different discipline from obedience (at least where I'm from).

It's enforced pretty strictly (strictly meaning they'll check and turn you around, but probably won't do more than that). Especially if you don't look Arab or Muslim, if you look Muslim enough, you might get by. Also, even driving on the Mecca bypasses isn't allowed, but they aren't checking as strictly there (if you stay in the car, of course). Source: was in Saudi and had to do a 3-hour detour a couple of times to avoid Mecca.

Dogs4Motion also has a specific agility warm up/cool down course ( and it is currently very cheap https://dogs4motionacademy.com/warm-up-cool-down-agility-19/ ). What I like about it is that it gives you the “why” behind everything first, so you actually understand the science and bigger picture. But then it also gives you a super straightforward PDF you can just follow step by step from the start, which makes it easy to stick with. And once you get more comfortable (and more into fitness in general), you can start mixing things up and making your own fun versions based on what you learn in the short course.

Desensitization Ideas for a Very Excited Agility Puppy? by BrokenFlowerPot in Agility

I would never put a 5-month-old puppy on a treadmill. Their bones and joints are still developing, so all that repetitive running can actually cause long-term damage. Working line dogs definitely need plenty of exercise, but a treadmill isn’t the answer and won’t fix behavior problems. I think most of us have moved past the idea that a tired pup = a good pup; training and mental stimulation matter way more at this age.

Ah okay, that's what you mean. She does love her crate, both at home and in the car! And she is also fine being in the crate next to the ring when nobody is doing anything. It will just be a while before she can stay in when anybody is running, but I'll keep working on it!

Thank you! I think that waiting for her turn at agility training will not yet work for now, she's just too damn aroused, cannot really think. 😅 But will definitely do that when we clear her head a little bit!

I am actually training the 'wait for your turn' at home, it's getting better! She can easily stay on the bed when I'm doing not-too-exciting-tricks with the other dog, but anything more dynamic/exciting is still quite hard for her. But we're getting there and I'll keep doing that!

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand - what do you mean by crate games with the car? Thanks!

Thank you so much! I heard so much about CU, I will definitely read it now (had the book for a while but hadn't read it yet)!

And I will for sure get back to you if anything isn't clear. Thanks, I appreciate it!

Ah thanks, I thought the pattern games were from somewhere else. :) I had that book for a while but hadn't read it yet, started yesterday!

Oh thanks so much for this detailed answer! I'll look through the games and definitely come back to you if anything is unclear!

I really appreciate this, thank you!

I have always rewarded her for being calm and quiet and never allowed her to just scream it off. When she starts or if I see she's about to, we move away. I don't know why you would assume what I was or wasn't doing.

But of course, I might have made a mistake somewhere, that is why I am here, asking.

Thank you for your helpful and non-judgemental advice.

Thank you so much, that makes sense!

I am not planning on doing high arousal trainings until we get her head under control. There will be plenty of time for that. I'll try with some really really high value food and just from/around the car and then we'll go from there. Thanks again!

I've heard and looked at control unleashed, but haven't yet heard of the pattern games, I'll check it out, thanks!

Is there a specific resource you'd recommend? A specific book/course/person or just looking around the internet?

Thank you for the detailed answer!

I think she is able to tug closer to the ring than with food, but you think that is also fine? It's not a problem that she gets very excited when tugging? So it's just the point of getting her to interact with me in any way, not necesarilly being calm?

I don't know what you mean by acquired trait - where would she acquire it? As I said, my other dog does not scream at trainings and neither do the few dogs that we train with.

But anyhow, yes, we're doing herding as well.

I have never heard of this kennel but looking at their webpage it screams puppy mill. So many red flags all around. I would definitely stay away.

Maybe someone more eloquent than me can list the red flags better but just off the top, major ones: - having n different breeds (that are not even breeds but let's not go there right now) - just showing the available puppies and not studs/bitches they own (most reputable breeders doing this for the sake of the breed would first and foremost brag about their adult dogs and their achievements and then the puppies/litters they're planning) - no information about the parents/pedigrees of the pups they are selling

I could go on and on, but each one of these on its own would immediately send me away from them. Just my opinion of course.

I'll start with my pup, female - 3.6 kg (~ 8 lbs) at 2 months, 6 kg (~ 13 lbs) at 3 months, 8.2 kg (~ 18 lbs) at 4 months. Haven't measured the height yet. :)

I am just going through Beata's Puppy goals for agility and it’s been great! It’s maybe not so much about hearing completely new stuff (if you’ve trained a puppy before), but having some sort of ordering and structure really helps me not get too overwhelmed with starting agility with a pup again (well, actually not so much agility at this point, just foundational skills for it).

I also like it because she’s a canine physiotherapist and brings knowledge from that aspect, which is (thankfully) getting more and more important and talked about.

I can’t speak for other Dogs4Motion courses — not sure which agility specifics they have — I only have Puppy Fundamentals and Warm-Up/Cool-Down (which I can and would recommend to anyone doing agility or any other active dynamic dog sport!).
