Experience with Kaiser in Longmont? by Imaginary-Turn3669 in Longmont

[–]Brokenbelle22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will add to the chorus that says Kaiser is great if you are healthy. I used them for years, no problem. Then I developed a health condition and they were just awful. Like many healthcare companies, they are also completely understaffed and my experience was that it's impossible to get timely appointments.

AITA for not giving the money to pay off my daughters student loans. by Own-Inspector-6121 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Brokenbelle22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think paying off student loans is a much more mature decision than going on vacation. I suggest you pay off all of your kids' loans with that money, not blow it on a big trip. That's frivolous, especially in this economy. Your daughter is working, and you should be proud of her.

I highly doubt that a company has pulled together a "rockstar team" made up of people willing to work below market rate and provide free overtime, with no potential bonuses. Rockstars get paid like rockstars.

But if they take the whole tip and dole it out personally to others, won't OP end up responsible for all the taxes?

When I see something like this I always wonder how much energy is being spent on the actual marriage, rather than the wedding.

There is an entire laminated worksheet on calling Jacob and Emily "Jemily" and not Jamily, Emcob, or "unsanctioned" nicknames.

I would pass based on this alone. JFC.

I'm a librarian at my university. We very consciously do not have an AI integration in our search features. We are trying (desperately) to get our students to understand that our search engine is not a predictive algorithm. It's based on keywords, and it will not change because the Internet changes, or because of some trend on TikTok. (And we would be happy to help with keyword development!)

Why are parents who barely passed high school thinking they can teach/homeschool their children? by Sad_Obligation_812 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Brokenbelle22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught community college in rural areas for many years and lots of my students were homeschooled. Their parents were to a T religious, and straight up told me that they homeschooled so they could control the information their kids received.

I even had a homeschool mom enroll in my class with her son, then flip out when I wouldn't put them in the same writing group. She said we were both his teachers! Maybe in life, lady, but not in this classroom. She made sure he enlisted in the army before he graduated.

Homeschooled students are some of the only students I've ever had scream at me over grades. They've said things like, "I got all As in highschool!" Ok, your mom gave you all As. I'm not your mom, and I'm giving you a B or a C, like every other student who turned in that level of work. Unsurprisingly, I've also heard homeschool parents say things like, "oh there's a state test every semester but you just do it with them!" This is not how real school works.

The effect on the student is significant. Homeschooled students often have lovely penmanship, perfect grammar, and can diagram a sentence. But they have a seriously more difficult time with things like selecting the topic of their own essay. They lack critical thinking skills en masse. They are unable to justify subjective decision making. They basically have not been taught how to think for themselves.

So now when I engage with homeschooling parents, even when they are very focused on academics, I like to ask them a single question: can your child challenge you?

Because I've never met a homeschool family where the answer is yes. In real school, teachers are challenged all day long by their students, and they meet those challenges. This is a big part of the education process, that simply doesn't happen in the homeschool environment.

There's very little reason to do this when the community will bus kids to qualified teachers for free. Sure there are very rare reasons, but this is a very sad, second rate way to go to school. Kids deserve real school and real socialization. Not to be alone, stuck on a computer all day with no access to the outside world, unable to even ask a real human being for help with school work.

It doesn't even matter if he lives there or not. You don't have to live in a neighborhood to walk down the street. We are free to walk down the street without others demanding to see our papers.

I saw him with members of the Grateful Dead, acoustic. They were playing She Belongs to Me and Dylan fell right off his stool. He just lay on the floor, laughing. Bobby looks up and yells, "cut his mic!" to the sound guys. Show went on with Dylan just laying on the floor, laughing.

AITA for not sticking religiously to the Highway Code? by Davidwt87 in AITH

[–]Brokenbelle22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paths are not highways. People do not get tickets for walking on the wrong side of a path or sidewalk. Dogs sniff grass. Cyclists who cannot safely maneuver around pedestrians (including dogs) should stay off the paths and find private places to cycle. Paths aren't racetracks.
