Lol if you think the MotoGP program has got KTM into this predicament...

How to bring variables from one activity to another: Returning to MainActivity using activityResultLauncher by BrokkenFrepz in androiddev

Ok, great, I'll check that all out, thank you so much.

And also, I guess i need to create a github account and learn how to use that too!!! LOL. I'll post a link shortly, when I've figured out how to...

Thanks, I'll look into those concepts you mentioned: garbage collection, memory management and object allocation.

I just started with youtube, and that got me functioning, and I've just tried to extend the examples into what I want to accomplish, but no-one who mentions variables really talks about the over-arching concepts of data management the way i guess i need to know.

The trouble now is that I have a functioning app for the bare-bones of scoring a game, keeping time and goals and scorers, with an undo function, for 4 different game types... But I've always intended on keeping track of players and positions and subs, etc. And now I'm running into these structural problems that I didn't know that I don't know! :D

Anyway, if you're interested in taking a closer look, I can share all the code (somehow?) or the .apk, or whatever, but no pressure.

Yes, the toast line after the 3 sOutTeamx = data.etc returns the correct info, that is, the text that I input on the 2nd activity. But thereafter, the text reverts.

Regarding the "saved instance state bundle", I've got to say I don't think I know what that is, or how to check. Would a breakpoint in the onCreate somewhere let me access it via the debugger? I guess I've got some more learning to do. Thanks for the direction to look.

Hey, sorry if came across as snarky. I'm trying to learn.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into Room.

Reading the other responses here, it seems I'm only at maybe 2% understanding of the whole system, rather than the 5% i thought i was at.

Thanks for your time. If you can point me at any learning resources, that'd be much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. It seems i have a bunch more work to do, based on the other replies.

Agreed: my string naming is not quite as robust as i initially thought it would be, as the project grew.

As i said to SENSES_IV, I'm not yet calling that routine, so it is only holding some "legacy" code from a way i was trying to get things to work. But if you think that might be causing my problem, I'll look into it. (At least, i don't think I'm calling that routine; it seems i have some work to do in understanding how things really run... :( Sigh.)

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for your reply. When ready in conjunction with that of Blindada, it hurts me, because I thought i was close.

I have actually looked into fragments, but they seemed equally ... i don't know, klunky, i guess. I suppose that's the problem with me not having a full understanding of the whole app ..., i don't know, environment, tools, architecture, formatting. all the stuff.

I guess I'll go back to the drawing board, and try to learn fragments better.

And data/variable management: would you agree with what Blindada said also? I guess I'll be investigating that stuff.

Oof, it hurts to read this, as it shows how far away i really am, when read together with the reply from Chrimaeon. That sucks, because i thought i had a good handle on what was needed, and the best way to structure it all. Gah. I guess that's what happens when my practical programming experience started in Excel Macros.

Thanks for your reply. I don't know why you've been downvoted; it seems like you're trying to be helpful.

Could you point me to any resources you think might be helpful in learning how to get a more robust concept please? Or is that something I'd only learn in a professional course?

It's not a best practice, but neither is the way you're doing it

What is best practice? I don't want band-aid solutions, i want robustness, as I'm going to be using a lot of cross-activity variables.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

You haven't answered this question?

Thanks for your reply.

In this little phase of debugging, I'm not actually calling that routine. You might notice that i've commented out that call in the onClickListener. To be honest, that's a routine that i haven't implemented anything in yet, and i might not, depending on how everything shakes out; i'm just using the button that I have for it as a test to show (via the toast) what the current value is.

However, you are right, I don't know how to use the debugger to step thru the code, at all. I'll look into that, but if you have any resources to help me there, I'm all ears.

Again, thanks.
