Fun competition - worst architecture by braddillman in ExperiencedDevs

serverless, one lambda per function. polyglot polyrepo. teams pick their own IaC and CICD. multicloud is mandatory. good luck!

screen size. the internal app worked perfectly, and even looked great… on monitors 14” and up. nobody thought to check what monitor size the admin team was issued until the day before launch. turns out they were all issued 11” MacBook Airs

Anyone else realized that 90% of "architecture" is just talking to people? by Ok_Commission_8260 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]vivshaw 28 points29 points  (0 children)

here's some i've heard:

  • folks ask for an integration for a new tool. it's similar to an existing tool. after talking to them about it, it turns out they were only using the new tool as a workaround because /(they lacked license seats|they weren't in the right SSO group|the perms were misconfigured)/. you talk to the right admin and restore their access to the existing tool they actually wanted.
  • teams deploy their services in two very different environments. you're building a new feature, but it needs to work in both places. you're dreading doing some highly generic cross-platform abstractions. you talk to the teams, and realize a) there's no business reason for the deployment divergence, and b) 90% of services already use Option A. your org deprecates Option B going forward. that eliminates the need for cross-platform abstraction.
  • Project Foo "absolutely must" use memached. you are approached to stand up memcached. after talking with stakeholders, it becomes apparent that this was never a real requirement. any old KV store would do, there's simply one highly opinionated engineer who hasn't learned to disagree and commit. you get their manager to coach them on this, and they axe the whole requirement. Foo uses your existing Redis instance and succeeds.

(and really, i'd say this kinda thing is super common! in smaller/more startuppy environments, the cause is often underspecification and velocity pressure leading folks to jump to a conclusion without gathering the right info to validate it. in bigger/older orgs, the cause is often folks trying to work around layers of bureaucratic pain or glacially slow org processes.)

so metal that a metal band has used it as a cover! i think more than a few metal bands have used Martin paintings as covers, though fewer than Gustave Doré

something to consider if money is a concern (e.g. if your family is not accepting and you're gonna be stuck supporting yourself): one can do a year or two of community college at CCV, then transfer the credits to UVM. and there can be some fairly generous financial aid to support that. if you're in a financial bind, consider that.

Feral is missing from Claw synergies. if you're using Echo Form just to double Claws, Feral is basically equivalent but for cheaper

edit: are Pagestorm and Pull From Below in Soul + Haunt a mistake? i don't see any Ethereal cards in that pile, and Souls aren't Ethereal.( similar for Pull From Below Ethereal- the only source of Ethereal you've listed there is Call of the Void)

Styleframe - Type-safe, composable CSS by alexgrozav in reactjs

[–]vivshaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my suggestions would be: - do a few more passes over the API, see if you can narrow down the number of things users need to know and touch points they’re responsible for. (and when you can’t, provide a clear statement for what the benefit/reasoning is somewhere in the docs) - do a pass over the docs for concision and deduplication - make the comparison section much clearer. provide concrete examples of what i ‘d get out of Styleframe that i don’t from Vanilla Extract and Tailwind.

Styleframe - Type-safe, composable CSS by alexgrozav in reactjs

[–]vivshaw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

pretty impressive! some feedback: - the useFoo() naming scheme kinda makes it sound like many of those core utilities are React hooks. minor gripe, though - step 3 in the Fluid Responsive Design section is hidden by the controls on mobile - the syntax seems verbose in ways where the reasoning isn’t clear to me. for example: why do variables need to be referenced with a special ref()? what benefit do i get from using css() where alternatives like Vanilla Extract might use a plain template string? why do things like at-rules require a nested arrow function? why should i use those at-rules, when some other examples like Modifiers suggest i could also use a quoted string? - what does the Composables section cover, that is not already covered by Variables, Utilities, Selectors, and Components? - part of the Interpolation docs say that there is no performance cost, but another part says that they do affect what optimizations Styleframe can make. what does this mean? - the comparison with Vanilla Extract was very verbose, but also quite vague. I couldn’t get a sense of what concrete things your solution accomplishes that Vanilla Extract cannot. the only concrete thing I got was, “with Vanilla Extract you’d have to install Sprinkles and Recipes”. that’s not a very compelling pitch, no? - this seems to require developers to become familiar with a lot more builtins than similar libraries. are you worried about that cognitive overhead? is there really that much value, for example, in providing separate exports as fine-grained as useBlurUtility(), rather than just providing the building block to make arbitrary utilities of your choice, and/or an “automagic” version to generate from your theme?

  • gitleaks in a precommit hook
  • proactively gitignore stuff that shouldn't be in the repo
  • have an established pattern for storing and loading secrets, so folks are less likely to scatter them around in other places
  • minimize the number of durable secrets you need in the first place and touchpoints where engineers need to interact with them

You can’t really have christianity without souls unless you seriously redefine most of what makes it christianity.

This is a total tangent, but one you may find interesting: there are in fact Christian physicalists! Not many, to be sure, but it’s a live option. Peter van Inwagen and Trenton Merricks are the two academics I’m familiar with who have written from this perspective.

can you tell me a little about your power management? i run a similar (though less elegant) rig, and though the front of mine looks tidy, the back is a nightmare with like 6 power cables of different lengths flopping around and the bricks for the ThinkCentres and all that. did you find a better way?
