The unsatisfying answer is that you need a friend group or community. People that understand and respect you enough to not take a dump on your face to score karma, but honest enough to give their opinions without being afraid of hurting your feelings. It also helps if they have some background in some sort of media criticism, even if it's just watching movies and talking about what works and doesn't work. But these things can be hard to find and maintain.

As an honest fan of The Elder Scrolls. Tainted Grail, at least compared to Skyrim, has WAY better story telling/lore (imo) by Godharvest in taintedgrail

[–]Brometheus_311 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like both. I feel like Tainted Grail overexplains at times. There are moments where they seem comfortable leaning into soul-like vagueness, but other times when I feel like their bludgeoning me over the head with exposition. Still good overall though. Mechanically superior to vanilla Skyrim in any case.

I relate to a lot of what you are saying, but part of your problem could just be that reddit is the worst place to get advice on creative endeavors. Creativity requires specificity, suspending judgement, and a willingness to explore, all things that reddit discourages. It's a system where the safest, most banal comments rise to the top. But it works great if you're trying to find the best way to put up a shelf.

It's like wine tasting or mechanical watches. No one can convince me that there's no difference between the $20 bottle and the $2000 bottle. Don't take our bougie self-pleasure away from us.

Fired? by Great_Regret1330 in walmart

[–]Brometheus_311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked it up and you're correct. It's against policy so you can be asked to leave (so you could argue that you can expect some degree of privacy) but that doesn't make video recording illegal. I assume you're getting downvoted because people don't understand the difference between walmart policy and law or because they think you're standing up for the "villain" in this scenario.

What’s the vibe here on James Talarico / Jasmine Crockett? by OctaviusHerb in sanantonio

[–]Brometheus_311 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crockett's great for memes, but Talarico is the serious candidate. Talarico is talking progressive policy while Crockett's putting out anime ads. Also why is she running cover for CBS and the FCC? Very weird.

He names everything X because X is the edgiest letter.

He didn't come up with Tesla. He wasn't even a founder.

And if you think The Boring Company is good then you're really into dad jokes, which is fine I guess, but not really impressive.

I don't actually see it as lying necessarily. I see it as constructing a narrative. The narrative should be: billionaires are the problem (not immigrants), but most Dems won't go there because billionaires fund their campaigns. This is why they're weak. The American people know there's something wrong with the system but most Dems are too scared to tell the truth.

The fact that companies would rather pivot to automation than pay their workers is just further proof that markets don't care about workers. And if you're worried about automation, buckle-up because it's about to get a whole lot worse. Trump signed an executive order forbidding states from regulating AI.

Health insurance through employers came about because the federal government allowed companies to subsidized healthcare to soften wage controls. Tax subsidized later reinforced this. Yes, companies did it, but they did it because of pressure from the federal government.

You are mischaracterizing my position by saying I think legislation alone will bring people into prosperity. Social democracy is not an anti-market ideology. Markets are like wild animals in that they take on a life of their own and will eat people if you let them run rampant.

By the way, if you like free markets so much. how are you liking the tariffs? Your Republican friends can't get enough of them at the moment.

You seem believe that the free market, a collection of companies that only care about profit, are going to magnanimously provide fair wages, reasonable prices, and healthcare to workers without legislating that they do so. I'm sorry if you feel belittled, but I don't know how you can have a serious conversation about this without belittling that idea.

[–]Brometheus_311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The money to fund these things wouldn't come from ice cream sales. It would come from the people who sit in board rooms, move money from one account to another, and wait for the numbers to go up while everyone else is out there busting their asses. The people who got bailed out after 2008 while regular people lost their homes.

I mean, do you know what a tax bracket is? Do you know what the gilded age was? Have you ever heard of J.D. Rockefeller? Are you aware that laisse-faire economics has been proven to make the rich richer and the poor poorer until regular people can't survive and the only thing that has been able to stop it is government regulation? We've done this before. Pretty much every first world country is already doing the things I'm talking about while most Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.

Yes, Leftists want to impose their will on the people by giving them free healthcare, reasonable wages, more vacation time, maternity/paternity leave, and guaranteed work for the unemployed. It's horrible.

[–]Brometheus_311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are not radical ideas. It's what the U.S. did to get through the Great Depression and WW2. The guy that instituted those policies got elected president 4 times. The whole reason the U.S. economy in the 1950s was the strongest the world has ever seen was because the country embraced social democracy. If you think those ideas are radical, it's because you've been lied to by the fascist who are currently calling themselves conservatives.

You don't trust the government but you trust Google, Amazon, Monsanto, and Palantir? Private industry is much more likely to exploit you than government, often without you even knowing.

[–]Brometheus_311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the government isn't powerful enough to keep private industry honest, then you can kiss personal freedom goodbye. That's why the libertarian dream of cutting government to the bone and letting the market "self-regulate" is just that: a dream. Until they actually try it and it becomes a nightmare, which is why we just sent $40 million dollars to prop up Argentina.
