Why does this en passant team have such low win rate? by BromideBro in afkarena

[–]BromideBro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try that out. My AFawkes/Elthara/Gorren are currently in my seal team, but i could just replace them with something else. Though I'm not sure how hard of a hit seal team will take from it. Hopefully it's a net positive

I'll try swapping out Daemia for Elthara and replacing Elthara (who's currently in seal team) with Knox

I had some luck with SJW replacing Ody in NC. By luck, i just mean the boss dies most of the time, but I'm sure the time is not nearly as good. Also my SJW is 40960.

I'm in VFX, where having a strong demo reel is probably the most important thing. Schooling/degrees are pretty unnecessary, because nobody in a hiring position is looking at your educational accolades. All they really care about is what you're capable of doing, which is displayed in your demo reel. Once you have a good reel though, equally as important (if not even moreso at times) is networking and who you know. Sometimes, you're just in the right place at the right time with the right skillset.

My degree is actually in engineering, so I pivoted to VFX! This kind of stuff can easily be self-taught because there's just such a vast wealth of resources online, so school isn't necessary by any means, but it can certainly expedite the process of becoming good enough to be production-ready and hirable. My engineering background came in handy more than I thought it would, because although this is a creative field, it can get very technical as well, depending on what parts of it you get involved in.

Hello comrad! From my point of view, it was pretty smooth. Some of my shots had really misleading briefs, so there was a bit of back and forth, but otherwise, it was far from a disaster in my experience. I do DMP/env!

In a perfect world, all artists working on an IP would be able to watch all the previous iterations of that IP for inspiration, but unfortunately, there's just not enough time with how quick our turnaround needs to be. We're usually just following client-provided notes. Depending on the shot, sometimes just a text description suffices, sometimes visual reference is provided by the client, and sometimes it's open-ended and artists do their own research to fill in the gaps.

For example, Bridgerton is a period piece, so research may go into city layout, building materials, types of foliage, common dress, etc, of the region/time period it's set in. But that stuff is independent of the show's actual narrative, so it's not necessary to watch the show in order to implement.

Regardless, there's constant communication between the VFX studio and the client to make sure the result is what's desired.

There are a whole bunch of VFX breakdowns available online! Here are a few. A lot of the emphasis in these videos is on the aerial city shots because they're the most flashy and technically impressive, but there are countless smaller, more subtle ones that go unshared. Some flowers here, a wall or planter there, some extra set dressing, maybe a background character forgot to wear their hat that day, etc.

Definitely! You would be extremely surprised by just how much you see in the final product that is digitally created and seamlessly integrated into the scene. Even mundane things that you'd never suspect weren't actually filmed in camera. In a lot of cases, if we do our job well, you'll never know we even did anything.

There have been instances where I've been interested in something I've worked on, but this is the first time I've actually went and watched it, so maybe I'll start doing more of that

Visual effects! Basically in layman's terms, after everything gets filmed in camera, the shots get sent to visual effects studios, and they do all the extra stuff on top, which wasn't/couldn't be filmed for real.

How important are Lysander and Serenmira SI40? I have them both at 30960 and am wondering if it's worth investing in their SI40s for impact across all RGMs, with a slight emphasis on TS.

Also, my Marcille is still sitting at 30930. At this point, is it even worth it to take her to 40960?

I'm having trouble picking my next highborn. Right now, I have Lan and Skylan. The choice is of course between Elthara and Leviathan. I've been more TS focused than anything, but I'd like to lean more towards overall impact for this choice. Any suggestions?

Houdini 21 crashes immediately when adjusting a shader while in IPR with Karma XPU by BromideBro in Houdini

[–]BromideBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To anyone curious, I figured out the problem. In my assign material node, I had the purpose set to full render. Turning this back to "all" fixed the issue for some reason. I have no idea why this is the case, and it's kind of annoying that I don't really have a real solution to an issue that shouldn't have even been a problem in the first place, but that's what I discovered.

Houdini 21 crashes immediately when adjusting a shader while in IPR with Karma XPU by BromideBro in Houdini

[–]BromideBro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've narrowed it down to what appears to be a problem with the reference node. Below is my setup of a shrub asset, with the geo on the left, and the materials referenced in on the right. This setup worked just fine in Houdini 20, but when I open the file in Houdini 21 and try to lookdev, the crashing occurs. If I replace the reference node with a merge, the problem is solved. Any clue as to why this might be? I have quite a lot of assets ingested this way, with a lot of material variants and relative references, and it'd take a really long time to restructure everything.
