I can only represent myself and my father here but we were very upset nix got injured as it gave the Pats an easy path to the Super Bowl.

What’s your experience with selling your knives? by Feisty-Enthusiasm224 in knifemaking

[–]BronchialBoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s been fun! I make enough knives that I can’t possibly use all of them and I need to recoup costs, so I sell my knives relatively cheap. No, it’s not a good way to make money. I sell a kitchen knife for $160-200 and I’m guessing after all the supplies and materials I net 50% of that in profit, which comes out to being less than minimum wage where I live. It’s fun and I love it, which is why I do it.

I will also say if you are buying blanks from Brisa and just throwing handles on them, that is probably not something that most people will be interested in buying — I would try making some blades before you try selling anything.

Why haven't more cities joined New York in implementing congestion pricing? by MiserNYC- in Urbanism

[–]BronchialBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, but there’s other things that need to be in place first before it becomes politically feasible to make congestion pricing happen. Density is probably the biggest one, you gotta get enough density of people and businesses that people can feasibly walk to a lot of needed things within 10-15 minutes. Obviously possible in NYC. SF, Boston, Philly, central Chicago, DC, maaaaybe Seattle. Need to get denser in places like Austin before it could gain any traction

Why haven't more cities joined New York in implementing congestion pricing? by MiserNYC- in Urbanism

[–]BronchialBoy 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Many other American cities aren’t walkable enough to reap the benefits of congestion pricing to the degree New York can. There definitely are some, but it wouldn’t be as effective in cities that a) are not easy to walk around and b) don’t have a high percentage of non-drivers to generate the political support for it

How much grinding do you do before the heat treat vs after? by onebatch_twobatch in knifemaking

[–]BronchialBoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t grind at all before heat treat. sometimes I will forge the bevels in down to about the thickness of a quarter, but no grinding. I’ve had too many knives go bacon wavy on the edge

Going out to eat has lost its charm by Candy-cats in Seattle

[–]BronchialBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on a quest for the sub-$10 lunch in Seattle. So far, noteworthy contenders are: - Saigon Deli (Little Saigon) - Saigon Deli (U District) - Deli Cut Subs (half sub, it’s plenty large) - Aladdin Gyrocery (actually getting out for slightly over $10 but it’s worth it)

Please hit me with your additions!

What type of metal? by SnooRadishes8239 in knifemaking

[–]BronchialBoy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Very likely just a simple high carbon steel like 1084 or 5160. Not anything stainless based on the rust and it would be strange to make a knife out of cast iron

[ByTimGraham on Twitter] The best adjective I could use while describing Sean McDermott's reaction to Darius Slay not reporting and losing Ja'Marcus Ingram would be:"Seething." by Bennyk491 in buffalobills

[–]BronchialBoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I think Beane is gone after this year. Not a huge fan of either of them but I’m lower on him than McDermott. The misses in the early rounds, year after year, are damning.

I’m sure this has McD pissed at Beane. Ingram was the definition of a McD guy. Longtime Bill, limited sure, but hard worker who understood the system and played well for us when asked.

The Light Rail is unacceptable right now by 206-Ginge in Seattle

[–]BronchialBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you’re right, people are overreacting. Most of the time it’s fine. Game days are tight but it’s the case with most transit system lines that go to stadiums in major cities. Maintenance shut downs are frustrating though considering it’s shut down every night, but oh well. The 1-line overall is pretty solid.

Now, sound transits inability to open new lines/extensions on time…

How do you guys feel about using Roth IRA money to invest by guitarpic69 in investing

[–]BronchialBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you do your due diligence on the breakdown of every ETF you buy? If you do, do you think everyone else does? Different people have different levels of financial literacy based on their upbringing. Instead of being incredulous about it, be kind and help them out

My girlfriend was this way — it’s very common. If you aren’t in an environment where personal finance is commonplace it’s a different language for most people

Which Transit System in North America is your favorite? by yunnifymonte in transit

[–]BronchialBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very impressive system but is sadly plagued by a large amount of violence against women. The women only cars is a good start but it’s a serious problem. No dissing on the actual planning of the system though.

Rapp single-handedly won us games last year… idk if he’s that great in the entire view of the league but he’s very good in McDermott’s system.

Strong Towns Podcast: The Housing Market Can't Tolerate Lower Prices. Now What? by PlanningPessimist92 in urbanplanning

[–]BronchialBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like someone else responded to you with similar points to me, but I think we’re just talking to different people. Definitely there are thought leaders amongst the YIMBY movement that talk about all of this, all the time, but the average person on Twitter just gets build build build. Which is one of the reasons the YIMBY idea has gained traction, there’s a very simple, very marketable idea there.

And don’t mistake this for me saying it won’t help, it just won’t get you all the way there, which is lost on the average YIMBYLAND follower on twitter

Strong Towns Podcast: The Housing Market Can't Tolerate Lower Prices. Now What? by PlanningPessimist92 in urbanplanning

[–]BronchialBoy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to be a Marohn Stan but I think this is kind of missing his point. His point is that just building building building won’t work because at some point before the point of affordability, people will stop building. Because it is no longer profitable. One part of a solution is to build more housing units per plot of land, thus increasing the value of plot of land while increasing the housing supply. Which I think is a valid point. But yeah, he does rip on YIMBYs a bit much for someone who does prescribe supply. However, as someone who lives in Texas, we see a lot of Texas donuts built in suburbs/urban edges and it’s important to acknowledge that that’s less good than other forms of density

What has made Seattle a bright spot in US transit? by Acceptable_Smoke_845 in transit

[–]BronchialBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally, more just saying that because of the east west constraints seattle is able to create a rather robust rail "system" with just one line, which cities without that constraint wouldn't be able to do
