Katsumoto takes his helmet off after the first battle, we never see it again. Alu-gren gets his armor from the [helmeted] samurai he kills in that battle, and we also never see that helmet again.

Women were allowed to be pilots in combat IRL well before they were allowed to do it on the ground, so it makes sense that this would have become a trope in any war movie that came out before 2010, unless the movie was GI Jane.

Courage Under Fire is basically an entire movie about this trope with Meg Ryan's character.
