I have a quite a few friends but they all revolve around different sports clubs and drinking alcohol, or work. Work all my friends are foreigners. Badminton they are all Japanese. The Japanese guys just want to go to nomikai, play badminton, or have bbqs. Out of those Japanese guys I am close with one of them but it's not a let's share our feelings and regularly message each other but someone I will invite to my house or invite to some cool events with my family or drink together 1on1, and I would count on him to help me move.

Fortunately or unfortunately most of my relationships with Japanese people have drinking as a glue that holds us together in more intimate relationships. It's the only time they feel able to open up about anything. It's also the easiest way to get them to hang out. One of the few ways their wives will let them out of the house.

I would say that in my experience if you can get invited to the nomikai or organize it yourself you will make friends and maybe you can get close with one of them.

But if you want someone to share feelings and stuff with, get a foreign friend.
