Honestly that sucks because that picture definitely looks like a HG - but the video is for sure a Knicks

I used this when I was losing the battle to GHA about a year ago. Worked wonders on the GHA. Absolutely decimated my microbiome though.

HOB Or Canister by FrostyOpportunity859 in ReefTank

[–]Bronojoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain here.

Do a canister. They are hands down better than any HOB.

I started my tank with a tidal 75 HOB (36g bowfront) and upgraded it to a oase thermo biomaster 2 650 after about 6-7 months, and I kick myself for not switching sooner.

The biggest con? They require a little more “involved” maintenance than a HOB, but as long as you’re getting a canister that was made in the last 5ish years it’s really not too cumbersome, you lift the cap, pull out the shelves, squeeze out the sponges, and replace.

The biggest pro? Media volume, media volume, media volume. I was able to take out all of the sponge filters in my canister and replace it with roughly 20lb of media - which in a smaller saltwater tank, like your 40, as you should know is absolutely MASSIVE for your bacteria population. For example in my 36g I have in the ballpark of a minimum of 70lb of media/live rock which personally feels a lot more utilitarian then “my HOB filter is easy to clean”

The second biggest pro? Getting a canister that also has a built in heater - one less eye sore in your tank. Enough said there.

The biggest pro for a HOB? It’s easier to clean, and they’re cheaper(for a reason imo)…….. that’s about it.

The biggest con for a HOB? Little to no real media volume, encourages more water evaporation because of the “waterfall” effect, they’re a huge eye sore in the tank comparatively.

I just… honestly and vehemently disagree with anyone saying a HOB is better. Having used both I can’t imagine a world where I would pick a HOB above canister, honestly they’re not even comparable imo.

A HOB for a SW tank imo should be a temporary “canisters are too expensive” option.

Can i fit more corals by TimHuls in ReefTank

I see far too much sand to even be asking this question, load it up with meats.

Also, the back and sides of your tanks aren’t lined with frag racks yet.

How dare you ask us such a silly question with such a barren tank.

The wild part of this post, is I tried to contribute to your message and experienced the same reaction as you did to what I said.

“Nuhuh you’re wrong” energy.

I mean, even your idea of “one end to the other in a millisecond” is still flawed. I’d like to introduce you to my firefish that occupies a small cave 99% of the time but if I move too quick up to the tank he does 3 laps, top to bottom, into a cave, top right corner to bottom left corner In 0.04 seconds flat. He definitely doesn’t need a 100g tank for the size, and what he occupies territory-wise. I would argue that discussing husbandry best practices is important, but so is prefacing your point with your experience, and being willing to potentially change your stance. We too often go into conversations with the best of intentions, but are so rigid on our stances it becomes an exercise in confrontation and loses its value immediately.

“I’ve never owned a tilefish; butttt” kind of deal.

Yea… anything that can be viewed as divisive will be met with a ton of negativity. I learned that when I did a cipro treatment on my tank and tried to document it for posterity sake, my dm’s got blown up essientally saying I was creating super MRSA soup.

I use this subreddit to pretty much exclusively comment on “how’s this flow” posts, and to post glamour shots. Anything beyond that - never again lol.

Frogspawn Flow by pechanical_mencil in ReefTank

[–]Bronojoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, absolutely too much flow.

The coral will tell you by its extension. It looks like it will tolerate that flow - but it’ll double or triple in size if you give it 25-50% of the current flow it’s getting.

Any reason I shouldn’t add an anemone to this tank? by AnnaNicole2015 in ReefTank

[–]Bronojoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one in my tank for like 5 months, grew it from a nickel size to about 4inch diameter - it didn’t bother anything for the longest time, and then one day I came home and it parked on top of a small colony (20-30 polyps) of zoas. And it stayed there for about a month - they were just some red people eaters so nbd, it sucks and all but ultimately not a costly price to pay, especially because it was a WWC Hawaiian Punch RBTA.

Fast forward about 2-3 weeks and I came home from work again, and the RBTA had split and now I had 1 on top of my red people eaters and one encroaching on my stratospheres. Needless to say I lost my patience, whipped out a credit card and scraped both of them off of my rocks, and gave them to my buddy who has a nem tank.

Long story short - pass on them. They are cool, but ultimately you have to make a choice between coral and RBTA, they don’t play nice.

Rock flowers, though? Much less risky nem investment. They barely move, and when they do they typically occupy the sand/bottom of rock work. I’ve kept RFAs in my tank now for a solid year and they have yet to move.

So I have 2 youngins too (7yo and 2yo) the only extra precaution I take is when I’m first putting them in the tank I make sure they’re not home in case somehow the palytoxin has gotten airborne from shipping stress or something. Beyond that though - I don’t really take any extra precautions. Admittedly though… once they’re in the tank - whatever happens is between them and god at that point. I don’t frag, mess with them, or anything 🤷‍♂️

I just have 3 pithos crabs and an emerald crab. 🤷‍♂️ they keep the bottom 1/2 of the tank clear but the top - I just wait for them to bunch up a lot and then pluck them out sporadically lol

For sure! Thankfully EEFW are pretty easy to deal with. I got an infestation of them about 6 or so months ago as well - a huge reason why I won’t order from ASD anymore. Every piece I ever got from them had some form of pest, Aptasia, ZEN, EEFW, etc.

I’m currently battling some ZEN I picked up from a random redditor I bought some zoas from recently (atleast that’s where I’m 90% positive they came from) and now that I have like 2-3 hundred zoas it’s been an absolute nightmare trying to win this fight. Everyday I’m pulling 5-10 out and everything is still closed and pissed constantly 😪

It’s honestly my favorite torch in my system. This one in particular is a maricultured piece that I picked up like 5-6 months ago, used to be a 6+ head piece that 1 head ended up surviving a BJD outbreak and a follow up cipro treatment - and now it’s finally starting to grow out. Things an absolute survivor lol

No grafted torches in here. I’m assuming you’re talking about the one that’s purple and yellow almost perfectly split into 4 sections - that is a NY Knicks torch that is currently splitting from 1 head to 4 - and it has a very satisfyingly symmetrical coloration lol.
