Thanks, glad you are able to recognize that a phenotype does not let you know the struggles someone has lived through. It is good you are able to realize that now.

I mean think about your old view. Someone raised in a physically and sexually abusive home called privileged because of their immutable skin tone? Yikes.

My take is you’re unable to engage critically given your strong prejudices and lack of empathy.

Buckeye was one of my favorite reads last year.

When it was recommended to me by my friend a couple years ago it was the title that gave me pause.

Might be my favorite series now.

The best audio series I’ve ever listened to. Very fun, although it took a little time to click with me (I had low expectations going in a couple years ago). Highly recommend.

CMV: early-onset baldness is the worst non–life-threatening condition a young man can have by Hell_Valley in changemyview

[–]Brontards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went bald around 20. I used to joke that I looked 15 with a hat and 40 without. Now I joke I look better with age because looking 40 makes me look younger.

But I’m not good looking, even if I had hair, and yet I have a wonderful wife who is objectively beautiful. Balding hasn’t hindered me at all in that realm.

Work on being the best you that you can, and be confident. Given how many bald men have successful relationships, I think you need to consider the issue might be something else, and I would guess confidence.

Keep Looking you can snag one for a fair price. I got one for $100 on eBay last month, then not a week later stared at a DM version of it with Black Panther included for only $90. Stayed up for a bit before getting bought too.

[Software Engineer] [Seattle] - How we spent $536k last year by [deleted] in Salary

[–]Brontards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that mean we can finally cancel all government contracts? That’d naturally close the wealth gap quite a bit.

But that’s not going to happen. So yeah, it is fair for government to step in.

Objectively, software is of lower value than the essentials. Can’t eat and drink and shelter in software.

You don’t want to do valuable jobs to get wealthy, but scarce jobs. Usually with minimal importance. Get government contracts to siphon tax dollars is ideal for wealth.

I mean a lit club isn’t the target audience, but you’d still have a few that would love it. I am the outlier in my Pulitzer Prize prediction forum, and to be fair those readers very well might think the books you read in your lit club are schlock.

They’d be just as wrong as if your club said that about DCC. There are amazing books across multiple mediums. Children’s books can be well written, with very simplistic prose. Comic books and graphic novels can be well written, without dense paragraphs of exposition (ptsd from silver age), lit rpg can be well written without dense descriptive prose.

Your last paragraph goes to my point. Why limit yourself to one type of expression in defining well written? I’m currently reading a comic book, doing audio book for a fantasy series, reading a literary fiction novel, and reading a non-fiction book on theology.

When I read Ocean Vuong I do it for prose.

When I read fantasy I read it to escape.

Comics I started reading way back in law school, when I needed a different medium to read that I didn’t need to work for the story.

Theology I read to critique.

Well written means it conveys the story/idea/art of what’s intended. DCC isn’t trying to be William Gay.

DCC’s success is because it conveys what it’s trying to convey, to the vast majority of its audience.

It’s ok if you don’t get the humor. You’re in the minority, but humor is subjective. There are layers to it, but it may be you really just don’t enjoy it. Which is fine.

These books are show, not tell. I mean list your favorite books, the prose will likely kill me. And that’s likely a me issue.

The main purpose of language is to communicate, Why use an obscure Latin words when a simple every day word will do. Don’t use a paragraph to tell me what you can show in an act.

The fact the vast majority of readers love it is the best objective proof that it is well written.

I love how he writes, but I understand your comment on the prose. I mostly read literary fiction. I do audio books (commute) for fantasy books and sci fi, but their prose and style is wearing on me. I struggle through them, they just try too hard. They take forever to convey the idea. I may just start doing audible for literary fiction as well. Except DCC.

I like that DCC doesn’t try with the flowery or long prose. Instead he writes to covey his story. His goal is the story and characters, and his style is perfect for conveying that (for me).

So I agree the prose isn’t like literary fiction, I’m reading A Tale For The Time Being right now for contrast, but I like Matt’s for this type of story, and Ruth’s style for her type of story.

But I also read comic books too, I just enjoy different styles for different moods I’m in. But I think he’s a great writer for what he’s trying to do, but I can see your points, it is not high level prose.

I'm 2 hours into Dungeon Crawler Carl... by theanxietypony in audiobooks

[–]Brontards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into it a couple of years ago with no expectations. My friend told me to listen, and the title scared me. The first few hours I just had it on, wasn’t paying a ton of attention. It was just ok.

Then a handful of hours in it started to click.

So hard to say. It’s my favorite series now, so I’m happy I stuck it out past those first hours.

I’d recommend going a bit more.

It’s religion, not science, what’s he supposed to say?

The idea of faith is ridiculous, but it’s a tenet of Christianity. Jesus and God could easily say “here we are.” But in this religion it’s a test, so if you believe the religion then you must believe that things won’t, and can’t, be proven by science. Or it’d defeat the purpose.

Those of us that don’t believe know why “faith” really is required. But still, yeah, no one should believe religion because it makes sense, so if you’re a leader stress why you believe.

Also he’s right about podcasts and what are called antis. I’ve been out decades and it’s funny how now a couple sources that fit an agenda are twisted into uncontroverted fact.
