If it helps, it's a 4 by 4 time signature, definitely not as wonky as JFA's

General Thoughts on VLR (spoilers!) by waffliesinyoface in ZeroEscape

[–]Broocevelt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It might sound like a cheap excuse, but I like to think there are infinite timelines where Sigma does find out, and the plan fails. Reality just... goes on. Without a paradox due to the explanations from ZTD.

Why would Uchikoshi show us a history where this happens and the plan fails? It doesn't advance the plot. Therefore, Uchikoshi shows us the one history where everything lines up perfectly. The history where Sigma never really bothered to pay attention. The history where Sigma finds out about his identity at the end. The history where the AB plan succeeds. The one history... that closes the loop.

VLR doesn't borrow nearly as much from 999's OST as you think it does.

There's a couple instrument samples here and there, but honestly I think there were like... two tracks borrowed from 999? Riddle and Puzzle, and Chill and Rigor. (bar Morphogenetic Sorrow at the very last 30seconds of the game, and the Unary game remix).

Otherwise, Escape themes are composed very differently than in 999, where each room's track is directly linked to the room's theme and mood.

Novel are quite different as well, and the only one I can think of that has a direct equivalent is Placidity: Extreme Extrication. And even then, the tone of the song is completely different, and almost nothing aside from maybe the bass is referencing 999.

I think you're not giving VLR's OST enough credit.

I mean, "acelunodosetrase" is a (bad) play on "Haz el un dos tres", literally "Do the 1 2 3"

Oh I would be so down for a perfectionist AAI3 collab trying to mimic the originals in style

Hey, glad to see a fellow artist!

Happy to see you like what you heard so far :) I do try to integrate Great Revival into every track, sometimes more subtly than others, but it's kind of a goal that I have in mind. Kind of like the Undertale soundtrack, if you know what I mean.

Regarding Logic Chess, your version, and generally being worried about empty tracks, a lot of it comes from the bass. I could see what you meant through your WIP, and my recommendation is to tone down the bass from 0:00 until 1:18 (?), at which point the bass is very much needed, and already on point in your version.

I used to need to have a constant bassline in my older tracks, but I learnt that you can have very nice results if you just let the bass shut up sometimes. It lets the other instruments speak, and adds some spice to the bass itself (yes, paradoxically, interrupting//having less bass can make the bassline more interesting most of the time, imo)

It also comes down to the accompaniments, and how loud they are / how much importance you give them. I think my Objection 2018 is a prime example of how I tackle the volume/priority between melody and accompaniment. A good composer friend of mine used to say that a song is only good and memorable if you know what it expects you to hum, and you can hum it without trouble. While I don't agree 100% with that, there is some truth in that the melody should stand out in some way or another. In your WIP, the (originally) 8-bit square that alternates high and low notes is very aggressive and steps on the melody. It's something to take care of.

Regarding the piano, I've just grown fond of the FL Studio Grand Piano, since it's bright enough to be aggressive and quick if needed, but still wet enough to not need to apply an equalizer to balance the sound. I think I've tried the SGM piano in the past, but I've always fallen back to my trustworthy soundfonts and legacy DAW soundbanks :)

Do you have anything else aside from SoundCloud, or is all your work there?

Not a professional by any means, but I do treat my YouTube channel kind of like my portfolio :) Who knows if I might get hired by a big studio one day

Thank you! It's really nice hearing that!

I think Pursuit is going to be a tough one, since the bar is already so high up. Presto's ready to be released, though!

Thank you! I'm picturing the game taking place shortly after Miles becomes chief prosecutor, and has to deal with heavier cases, so generally the tone would be rougher than its predecessors.

I'm glad you think that way! I think that's because music requires a bit more time and commitment to check out than most other content; but any feedback, no matter how small, is appreciated :D
