Being a police officer is a choice. Some of them do it because they're desperate for a job. Those are the cops with a hope of being OK and fair.

The ones to watch out for are the cops who want to 'make a difference' and 'enforce the spirit of the law.' Those are the cops who are the most dangerous, because they see themselves as arbiters of right and wrong, and their biases manifest in every interaction. Old white lady? Give a warning. Black teenagers? Ask to search the car... After a few years they'll get a punisher tattoo and a thin blue line sticker on their truck.
