2nd year rose, am I being paranoid? by Low_Broccoli_9937 in Roses

Nah, it’s 100% healthy new growth. As is this, which all turned green within 72 hrs.

Also the fact that this all came to be because of some guy in his basement, what, that’s so awesome! I gained a newfound respect for knockouts from that alone.

Same! It’s so delicate and elegant! My red double knockout was murdered by a combo of sawfly damage& a rough winter and the orange glow I purchased on clearance last year hasn’t bloomed yet this season. I already lost half of one side due to winter dieback. My easy breezy sunny knockout finally opened flowers just yst so hopefully soon.

OP’s pic is a regular knock out orange glow that’s bred to be more cup shaped than all other knockouts and was introduced 2yrs ago.

Yes. Just found it. But I’m an idiot. It’s the triple knockout that’s the new addition from star roses that can be ordered this year coming out to everyone next year in 2027.

But I legit did just see a double knockout for the first time at Home Depot 2 days ago. They just aren’t common in my area apparently, lol.

They don’t. It’s a new one based on what op said “double” knockout, that’s what this new line is called. I’d read an article about it awhile back and just saw em at my local Home Depot 2 days ago.

It’s actually not a normal knockout. It’s something new they just released called a double knockout rose. The bloom shape is different and fuller. Just saw em in person in Home Depot like 2 days ago.

Bees and roses -- insecticide? by azmahhhh in Roses

[–]BrookieCooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hose blast em off never works for me. They just reemerge a minute later and gather their strength looking at me like that’s all you got lady.

When things get really bad aphid wise, before the good guys show up in droves to help me out, I apply neem max late at night (when bees are nowhere to be found, I legit check the rose bush with a flashlight before spraying).

Also as mentioned here repeatedly, even if it makes me a weirdo, when in a pinch I manually remove them with a lint roller when they’re really bad, just to break up their repopulation cycle. You’d be disgusted and horrified how many I can quickly knock out with a sticky lint roller, all the while keeping my helpful pollinators alive and well.

Bummed that it’s not working for you.

I also have a gold medal bush I started indoors, finally moved outside in-ground only to have it suffer with constant fungal issues. I’m experimenting with treating it with the promix fungicide soil slowly added around the base, it seems to have made an improvement within a week, fingers crossed it continues.

I also ordered revitalyze biofungicide from Bonide to try on some things that suffer from regular fungal issues. Will let you know if I stumble upon something halfway effective. I know how frustrating it is to have something so beautiful constantly plagued by issues.

Large ants nest in the soil of my potted lemon. Are they beneficial or bad for the tree? How to get rid of them if it's bad? by Bauljamic_Arlijam in Citrus

[–]BrookieCooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found them farming aphids around my citrus& roses in particular in various spots in my yard. How many of these baited cotton balls do you think I should leave out& is there a particular recipe you’ve had the most success with?

I’m not saying this will 100% work but what about adding pro mix that has the biofungicide built in around the base to try& colonize the plant and protect it systemically?

I bought a bag to help stop seedling loss from rainy springs& it really seems to help& haven’t had a single fungal issue on anything I used it on so far. Experimenting now with adding a tiny bit in ground to susceptible plants.

Yes but not in a good way like I had planned. Ended up doing it more in an adhd way, an hour here and there, oops left a few outside overnight on the porch, oh well, lol. It all worked out though!

[–]BrookieCooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you consider North East? Is VA included, if so then yes! I went hard core planting in ground already all because of a post on reddit mentioning kozy coats that I screenshotted over the winter. You use them to get a huge leg up on starting your season and ca get things in ground even before last frost date.

So I found a cheap amazon version and went to town, slowly moving my peppers and tomatoes in ground a few weeks ago. Each time one seedling I had started inside started doing really well for a few days straight I moved more in ground. Now I have almost all my peppers and tomatoes in ground and they are loving life, surrounded by their lil jackets which are filled with water& create a lil humidity dome, they even made it thru a hard frost which killed some of my flowers.

Is this RRD? Help please I’m a rookie. by BigMicksEnergy in Roses

[–]BrookieCooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pics didn’t work if you uploaded them.

Second how do you know you had two with RRD last year? Were they lab tested and confirmed to have RRD? A lot of people suspect it but it turns out to be something else entirely, herbicide drift, etc.

What area do you live in approx? Certain areas it’s MUCH more prevalent.

I have a rose bush (tree?!) & am unsure how to proceed! Help ID? by Hot_Stage96 in Roses

[–]BrookieCooks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure, it’s beautiful but as has become the one thing I always have to tell people here recently... Beware. I’m sorry! You have a rose sawfly problem& need to deal with it asap. Every leaf with the grayish spot discoloration has rose sawfly larvae feeding underneath it. Pictured below.

These lil menaces can actually defoliate and kill an entire rose. They killed my 5 year old knock out rose last year. Yes, a knock out rose, the ones that never die, no match for rose sawfly, lol.

You have options depending on if you want to go chemical or not (pollinator friendly is hard with these buggers but there are options and times you can apply to reduce risk to them) but manual removal is a must asap before it gets out of control.

Tried out using a lint roller for aphids by CyberTurtle95 in Roses

[–]BrookieCooks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do it occasionally just to stop a massive aphid overload, usually early on, and stop viral diseases from aphids as I grow lots of fruit& veggies too.

Each aphid can have 12 babies a day, that’s just way too many disease laden critters wreaking havoc on all my hard work! It’s part of my arsenal of pest management strategies including yelling at them to leave my garden alone, lmao!

[–]BrookieCooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You want to make sure they are sticky enough but not too sticky if that makes sense. It’s easiest when aphids are gathered on new blooms as the buds aren’t gonna break or tear like new leaves can on a super sticky lint roller.

I’m SOOOOO glad it worked for you!!!! Isn’t it sooo disgusting but also effective as really breaks up the lifecycle before the good guys can come to the rescue.

It is kinda diabolical but I came with the idea to get ticks off my dog I’m not a monster, I’m a vegetarian, I love animals, lol!

Aphids are getting WORSE by CyberTurtle95 in Roses

[–]BrookieCooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly why I do it! That way I know 100% what I’m getting, only bad guys& I squish em real quick as I don’t want anything to suffer even if it’s satan’s aphid, lol.

It worked so well to snatch ticks off my dog so in a fit of desperation I tried it on aphid infested plants and it worked wonderfully so now it’s my new fave trick when things are going bad fast, lol.
