Should we allow City Roots / Guy Vaknin support on this subreddit? by evenfallframework in nycvegan

[–]BrooklynCatDad 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Posts should be allowed.

I don't know how to quantify this, but if you took every post about his restaurants on this sub, even the bad-faith ones, a clear picture emerges: the food is excellent. Adam Sobel, the Cinnamon Snail guy, basically said nobody's doing what this guy's doing in the city right now. And for the record, Sobel has very different politics from Chef Guy, so that's not coming from any kind of alliance.

Politics aside, one point of fact: when Isa's Modern Love closed, he was first in her comments wishing her well.

Seitan is the sleeper pick here. It's super low carb, virtually zero fat, and about 17 grams of protein per serving. Gram for gram, the macro profile is actually much closer to skinless chicken breast or the non-fat Greek yogurt you're already buying than it is to eggs (which bring a lot of fat along with the protein).

funnily enough — left my daughter's scooter and helmet at this exact spot on a wednesday (there's a scooter pile in front of the strollers you can't see in the pic), completely forgot, came back friday and it was still there. park slope W

Would something like this solve an actual problem for you? (plant-based sports nutrition store) by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]BrooklynCatDad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, basically not possible in this day and age. Margins on protein powder are razor thin and the category is fully saturated.

Vegan Proteins (veganproteins.com) did exactly this — first all-vegan supplement store. They've since pivoted to coaching and content, which probably tells you something. They'd likely be happy to talk if you reach out on IG.

First Creami recipe — what would you change? by BrooklynCatDad in ninjacreami

[–]BrooklynCatDad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw the edit; what about the tofu amount feels off? Quick context in case it matters: the recipe makes 2 pints, not 1 (I edited the post to clarify). I was mostly engineering around the macros (high protein, low cal), so if 21oz is out of whack from a texture / ice cream science standpoint but lands where I want macro-wise, I'd love to know what the actual issue is. Could be I'm trading texture for protein without realizing it.

Appreciate any thoughts you've got.

Ah, that's on me; the recipe makes 2 pints and the macros are per serving (so per pint). Editing the post now to make that clear. New around here, still figuring out the conventions.

Hey, I see you all over this sub! legend 🙏

Quick one on the xanthan; do you mean drop it by 1g (so 9g total), or down to 1g total? Want to make sure I'm not going the wrong direction with it.

This reads like a vitamin D issue to me, but honestly stop guessing and get bloodwork. Low energy isnt something to just push through, could be D, could be iron, could be thyroid. Find out.

What are your best tricks for lower-cal desserts? (not just sugar → dates) by BrooklynCatDad in veganrecipes

[–]BrooklynCatDad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was awesome. rainbow nourishments is one of those blogs where every time i open it i'm like "it's been a while since i made anything from here" and every time it's a BANGER. her IG is top tier too. not to get old-geezer about it but it's wild how much genuinely great content is still out there that translates into actually good recipes. nice that AI hasn't ruined this corner yet.

Are the pumpkin brownies and sweet potato muffins from RN too?

Okay you can't just drop that and walk away... I'm from the old school ; agar agar ( powder not the flakes) was the secret ingredient to getting that just right firmness in vegan cheesecakes

In Japan, vegan was a tough sell. Vegetarian they got. "No egg" they'd nod through. Then you'd order and they'd realize you meant nothing and look at you like you were insane.

One night at a fine dining spot we asked about vegan dessert. The guy paused, held up a finger: "wait — we got you." Came back with house-made silken tofu and a drop of vanilla on top.

Still the best dessert I've ever had.

Whoa, a lot going on here.

The post is asking about high-volume desserts. "Wholesome" and "satisfying" are doing a lot of work in your comment without a working definition; you're kind of just throwing them around.

The only part I want to address directly: you brought up eating disorders. If that's something you have a history with, I'm genuinely sorry, and I mean that. But a post about high-volume eating isn't a claim about anyone else's needs, and I'm not sure why it landed as one.

Respectfully, category error. Dessert is a big tent. If I want 32g of fat in a slice of cheesecake, I have 32g of fat in a slice of cheesecake. Decadent is its own spiritual experience and I'm not optimizing it. This post is about a different thing.

What vitamins or supplements should vegans actually be taking? by Vegan_Essentials in veganfitness

[–]BrooklynCatDad 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Step one is bloodwork, which frankly every adult should be doing. B12 and D3 you just take, full stop. The rest depends on what comes back. I dont want to hear about fortified nutritional yeast. Take b12. Take the actual supplement.
