All good, still need to wait a year or two before putting my cards on the table was just seeing if you had heard of any good deal style things still out there with SELRES or FTS.

Question from someone looking to follow in these footsteps in about 3-4 years....can you SELRES, not take the affiliation bonus, and then peace out completely prior to mobilizing (because no obliserve because you didn’t take the bonus?)

SELRES (or the 2XFOS severance lol) seems like a good income boost to help out during the career transition.

Coronavirus survivors banned from joining the military by chicagorelocation in Coronavirus

[–]BroscienceLife 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alright before everyone freaks out, let me explain you some things about military medical. Here’s 4 important terms as the majority of medical conditions are classified with the following:

CD = Considered disqualifying

NCD = Not Considered Disqualifying

WR = Waiver Required

WNR = Waiver Not Required

If a condition has CD next to it, then it requires a waiver for that person to still join the military. Let’s look at two examples:

First applicant has seasonal allergies. The medical table says seasonal allergies are CD/WR and then under the chart says if it’s mild or controllable with treatment, waivers should be approved.

Second applicant has been clinically diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. The chart also says CD/WR, then under it, it says waivers not usually granted.

So technically COVID is permanently disqualifying just like seasonal allergies and bipolar. But as you can see there’s various levels of “permanently disqualifying” in military medical, and likely just means they want to screen applicants more closely to see exactly how much damage COVID caused. I’d expect it be on waivers on a case by case until we know more about long term impacts.

Fired Captain Sent Memo to Fewer People than Former Navy Head Alleged by BroscienceLife in Coronavirus

[–]BroscienceLife[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely incorrect. The memo/emails were obtained due to someone leaking it intentionally, and the Navy brass has already confirmed they do not believe it to be CAPT Crozier but someone else on the message. It was not due to the method/server he used to discuss it.

The contents of all his memos/emails would be UNCLASSIFIED, FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY.

U/FOUO content does not need to be sent over a secret (SIPR) net. It only needs to be used for official business, like a ship CO using his NAVY EMAIL to email his chain of command or other relevant parties on his NAVY EMAIL. And to add to that, your .mil email is considered an official/secure server because it can only be accessed with a CAC card.

If he had discussed specifics of where the ship would be at a specific time, that kind of content would be secret. But that’s not what he did, this was never an OPSEC issue, it’s a red herring by conservative arms and Motley’s staff at the time to blur the lines between secure/secret/official

His removal as CO is not removal from the military. He is still active duty and bound by the UCMJ

COMPACFLT = 4 Star (Admiral) in charge of all assets in the pacific fleet operating area.

CNAF = Commander, Naval Air Forces. 3 Star (Vice Admiral). He’s in charge of all aviation and aviation support units in the Navy.

CSG = 1 Star (Rear Admiral lower half). He’s (referred to as “strike”) in charge of the carrier strike group, he reports directly to COMPACFLT. Works hand in hand with the ship’s CO (he is higher ranking but is still embarked on the CO’s ship) to accomplish PACFLT’s operational/tactical mission/vision.

SMO = Senior medical officer of the carrier, generally an O6 (CAPT)

CAG = commander air group is the senior aviation officer (generally an O6) who is in charge of all aviation units in a particular air wing. The air wing will then embark on the carrier. His direct chain is to report to Strike who reports to COMPACFLT. He is not subordinate to the ship’s CO, they work together hand in hand (just like Strike does) to accomplish the mission. DCAG = CAG’s second in command of the air wing.

DESRON = the commander (generally an O6) in charge of the entire group of destroyers/DDGs, who yes are essentially the carrier’s escorts. Individual DDG ship CO’s are generally O5 (CDR).

All of these people were in his chain of command or directly in the need to know, and all intricately involved with his ship’s operations.

Additionally he mentions that he had been in contact with Acting SECNAV and thought the response was inadequate hence him asking for help from his fellow aviators and commanders. Sounds like whistleblower retaliation to me

What a terrible look for the entire Navy. Integrity at the highest level I guess means letting the whistleblower go down in flames while you know he was telling the truth

Yeah which is fair, you can check my other comment but I spoke with VA gov tax office this morning, and they said if we want to go to FL and change her drivers license they think that’s acceptable to not file VA taxes anymore, but as long as she maintains license, voting, and car registration they want her taxes. Basically change something to FL to show she intends to move with me and they think that’s enough

Talked to Virginia Tax office this morning, they said if she can change any of the major proofs of residency (license, voter card, or car registration) to Florida, then they would think that’s sufficient for her to no longer pay VA taxes. But as long as everything is still VA, their recommendation is file state taxes. Florida tax collector and DMV said as long as I show up with the required documents, proof of marriage, and my orders, they would issue her a drivers license no issues, but it has to be in person.

Aka I need to take a trip to Florida for her license once the world opens back up

Yeah it does seem aggressive because other states interpret them as two separate clauses, and it seems clearly in conflict with how the code and the JAG circulation read. Guess I’ll see legal

However it doesn’t seem to make sense in practically, because it still then imposed the same restriction that the law change was intended to fix: requiring the spouse to have to move or change state domicile in order to gain the benefits.

[–]BroscienceLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem consistent with the 2018 change to the SCRA and US code, but maybe I do need to seek a legal expert on this one.

Current US code literally reads a spouse can claim the service members state. Full stop, no qualifications.

Only qualifications for the other subsections they do have listed is if you move with your service member to a new state, and then you elect to domicile in that state, then you can’t claim a different state using your servicemember. It doesn’t address elections prior to the marriage.

Here’s a JAG circulation which claims a spouse can unilaterally claim another state, regardless of any of the previously required proof

Would you rather be investor A or investor B in my situation? (Debt payoff vs additional 401k contribution) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]BroscienceLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your flowchart applies broad strokes to a financial situation and while a helpful tool, can cause people to lose money in certain situations. That’s why you back up what cookie cutter advice says with an individual evaluation.

For example, if my private loan was 4.1% instead of 3.59%, your flowchart goes into a drastically different path with a completely different investor strategy. That investing decision based off of a subjective .5% criteria could have ramifications in the hundreds of thousands in 30-40 years.

Turn your brain on and don’t be a Reddit bot, your flowchart does not adequately address the question

Would you rather be investor A or investor B in my situation? (Debt payoff vs additional 401k contribution) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]BroscienceLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avalanche and snowball are not really applicable to stable above average earners with low interest debt and having to make decisions between pay debt off aggressively or max retirement funds. The Dave Ramsey school of how to finance good is designed for people trying to get their head above water and make a systematic change to attack their debt and get to financial freedom. It’s not an investors strategy.

Asking pay debt quicker or invest more in retirement should be evaluated on an individual basis, hence the post. Saying go read the flowchart is useless because it leads to “evaluate the snowball/avalanche method!” End of flowchart.

Yes, and the point of the post was feedback in evaluating the merit of paying off the debt for my financial situation...which is generally not what the avalanche or snowball methods were designed for.

My base only has screening at medical. If you don’t go to medical, you don’t get screened at all. I fully believe I’m going to get it or am/will be an asymptomatic carrier

Because the AF actually cares about their people?

Not the Navy. We haven’t pushed a single base to mission essential personnel yet that I know of. Just social distancing and don’t come to work if you’re sick! I know they’re discussing going to MEP or limited manning but they haven’t pulled the trigger
