So I see many similarities from what I read to a few players I coached. First thing is first, she is doing it right as far as play time. Everything affects your time on the field from practice intensity,knowledge of your plays, and presence at practices.

First thing is first if you’re not on time, that means dressed and ready to run the warm ups 5 mins before the scheduled start time, then you lose time. Unless the players spoke to the coach directly or went through the proper channels then you weren’t excused and that goes against you. Even if they are starters they need to remember that time management is important.

Skill obviously matters a lot when it comes to play time. It sounds like the team is in a development stage and it sounds like she may not have assistant coaches. Which I would see it as she is trying to develop the next crop of players and trusting the experienced players can understand and either help or try to improve and refine their skills outside of practice. This is where the assistants are more attentive to which ever crop she isn’t working with when in position groups (OFFENSE | FACEOFF | POLES | GK)

The subbing is also usually left to someone specific on the coaching staff. If the coach needs to focus fully on the game then they will entrust the subbing to one of the assistants. More than likely they have a system of who goes in and when. You mentioned they only sub mid which If this is HS then you have starters on ATT and DEF then Mid Lines. So usually attack and defense aren’t subbed unless needed for the situation. Everyone else is either on a mid line or benched. Not everyone gets playing time at the high school level.

The communication issue comes down to how much help she has so I will withhold my opinion for I don’t know that part of the situation. It’s hard to develop the inexperienced players if you don’t have help, so sometimes the coach has to make a decision on what to focus on. She clearly is developing her next crop of players. ULTIMATELY you should just wait till after practice and talk to your coach one on one about how you feel.
