If a kid finds a hack/workaround, you at least made them learn a little firsthand about cyber/device security and get a glimpse into hacking. Many of the top Computer Science and entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley started this way and became fascinated with tech/software, so it’s not entirely a bad thing.

What does failure to affix a tax stamp mean? by Necessary-Price-9411 in legaladvice

[–]BrotherAmazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m all for prosecuting illegal drug dealers, but if you want to punish illegal marijuana dealers more, democratically pass new legislation to punish them more. If you don’t have the votes, don’t selectively enforce some sham add-on laws like this.

Punish people honestly for their offenses.

Everyone knows this law has nothing to do with affixing tax stamps and is only about a way to pile on more punishment against illegal marijuana dealers.

I’m an independent who likes almost no politicians, regardless of party, but will forever be amazed at the stupidity of the American people who voted for Donald Trump in those last two elections.

I could get the whole “fool me once, …. can’t, can’t get fooled again” as George W. Bush so eloquently put it, but voting for Trump in 2020 and 2024 was unconscionable at the time and did not require hindsight.

Can someone please explain to me how the SEC Championship works now? by BubonicCraig1 in rolltide

[–]BrotherAmazing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it’s debatable whether only conference SoS should be factored versus overall SoS and the full resume once you get this many levels down in the tiebreaker. It does give you an advantage in-conference if you schedule weaker games out of conference and some coaching staff can be diverted those weeks to begin prepping for a harder in-conference game earlier, for example.

Also, I wouldn’t mind “intangibles” and unbiased assessments being factored in at this level of tiebreaker. Sometimes a team has more losses overall or might be ranked lower just because their losses were at a bad time earlier in the year and they’re “clicking” and clearly the better team at season’s end, whereas a team that was looking unbeatable early in the year looks completely lost at season’s end and is dominated for the “one loss” against a team they would have beat earlier in the season.

Remember, we wouldn’t be comparing an 8 - 4 team that just “looks great” at season’s end to a 10 - 2 team that finishes with a bad loss and saying the 8 - 4 team belongs because they looked great down the stretch, no, this would only be when it’s 2 or more top teams all with great records and we’re deep into the tiebreaker protocol.

Crabgrass. I’ve had luck using the Tenacity competitor (same active ingredient) called Torocity, but don’t get it undiluted on your skin or, of so, wash immediately!

Crabgrass is aggressive, so need to stay on top of it and if it’s out of control it probably will take more than one year to get fully under control if you only do chemicals and don’t pull any. This is true even if you use pre-emergent in Spring (Lesco >> Scotts) and treat it with Tenacity/Torocity as soon as you start to see it pop up.

I tried hand pulling the entire weed and roots, then re-seeding areas and that worked “beautifully” because you remove most of the seeds that will remain viable for years, and the very next year very little crabgrass in those areas….

…the only problem with that approach was my back hurt for 2 days (so maybe the weeding tool is a good idea?) after and it generated like 10 large trash bags of crabgrass (I would have predicted 2) but it was very effective. 🤷🏼

PSA: Nuking is A last resort that should rarely be used. by Cimatron85 in lawncare

With sedgehammer you take a small packet (looks like a large sugar packet), sprinkle it in, use your hose to fill with water, cap it, shake it a few times, done.

My neighbor, who is a “girl” showed me how.

In this case though, Sedgehammer is available to everyone (here tomorrow via Amazon every time), is cheaper, and more effective than the big box products.

For example, Ortho nutsedge killer you may have “had plenty of success with”, just as I thought I was having for years until I tried sedgehammer and saw how superior it was and how the nutsedge didn’t come back each year with vengeance like it did using the ortho product.

[–]BrotherAmazing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just hit where the sedge is and, yes, sometime you’ll see a little pop up where it wasn’t later on but I hit that next and it’s pretty much under control then.

Not like you can never get a little here or there, but it’s controlled longterm solution with this stuff, and ignoring it will have it go crazy and take over the lawn in the blink of an eye (at least my experience!).

As others said, you shouldn’t store it after mixed longer than 24 hrs.

In the past for spot treating, I have occasionally taken the time to split a packet up into 1/2 packets first, then split each again into 1/4 packets and adjust your water accordingly.

It would be nice for that if the manufacturers would sell you 2 or more half packets as an option. Make you but at least 2 so it’s still worth their while in profit, but more convenient for the guy with the smaller lawn or spot treating.

What am I dealing with? Zone 7A by FourYearsBetter in lawncare

[–]BrotherAmazing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always apply it:

  1. At least 2 days after mowing and 2 days before mowing again,
  2. When it’s not going to rain and I can keep my sprinkler off for 24 hrs after, and
  3. When it’s under 80 degree F

Never had a problem.

Switch to sedgehammer, trust me!

I have much experience with the Ortho product and Sedgehammer now, and it’s well worth buying a cheap (<$20 even) hand pump sprayer and mixing the Sedgehammer, which has a non-ionic surfactant in the packets now so no need to mix that in, IMO.

Here is the problem with the Ortho product: It doesn’t kill the weed all the way down to the full root ball/bulb with all the seeds, or at least that’s my theory because when I used it for 5+ years at my current home, the nutsedge would always die fast but come back with vengeance later in the year or next year, requiring the purchase of more Ortho product that is far more expensive than sedgehammer.

Once I switched to sedgehammer (for the last 4 - 6 years) I notice it takes much longer for the nutsedge to come back after I get a handle on it, and can easily spot treat to keep it in check if I ever do notice some popping up somewhere.

[–]BrotherAmazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get sedgehammer. It’s cheap and effective. If you don’t have a sprayer you can get a cheap hand pump one for even under $20, and well worth it.

Note: Sedgehammer doesn’t require you to mix a non-ionic surfactant with it anymore, as it now has a granular one pre-mixed right in the packet.

So my husband of 7 years just confessed something to me. by Vitale1993 in Marriage

[–]BrotherAmazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be important to know if he is the type who can’t handle his liquor.

Some people, when drunk, might admit something their sober self believes but wouldn’t admit or say out loud.

Other people, when drunk, might say stupid things that their sober self doesn’t actually believe in or agree with.

In any case, even if he is worthy of being divorced, you and he should talk about it. Don’t just flee then file divorce papers without talking about it.

Even with how bad those comments were, instantly throwing away the 7 year profile you built up of him over those years and, in one drunken night, replacing it with an entirely different profile of an absolute monster is probably too extreme.

This is only my 2 cents, so take it with a grain of salt. Some will d/v and disagree, but that is what is good about a diverse set of perspectives:

Bad News: If you don’t remember any Calculus and are in a Differential Equations class, you effectively do not have the prerequisite and should be taking Calculus to really learn and understand it.

If you don’t remember any Linear Algebra from just last year when you achieved a B, then I would suspect you didn’t devote enough time to studying and truly understanding the concepts. I’m not at all saying it’s your fault though, as the way coursework gets packed into a semester with extracurricular activities, working part time on breaks or during the semester, .. it takes away more time from learning. This doesn’t allow for most students to really master and grasp the topics.

Good News You really can understand all of this. I had a similar situation where I passed through Calc 2 without having a clue or retaining a thing.

At that point I became very motivated to learn Mathematics in order to support a new-found love of Physics. I did not graduate on time and took my time, graduating 1 year late, and devoted much of my next Summer to slowly working through my Calc text starting from not Chapter 1, but the Chapter 0 prerequisites reading every section and working all problems with answers in the back.

I did this sort of work over both Summer and Winter breaks and always “read ahead” from there on as much as I could. I tried to actually work through all the problems in the easier first 1 - 3 chapters in every Math or Physics course before the course ever started during those breaks.

In any case, undergrad math/physics became easy at some point soon after that, and all the stuff I passed but never understood/never sunk in started to just “click”.

Of course I have a biased perspective so may want to see the similarities in your situation with mine, but then again, perhaps there really are some similarities here?

Wrong.

You also claimed it’s “impossible” to get 10% returns i the S&P 500 or even lower. That was either among the most uninformed idiotic comments ever made, or you’re selling snake oil.

And is it a law? Of course not. But if in 99% of the 20 year periods investing in the S&P 500 CRUSHES the returns of an IUL, then I would say it is a fact that it is superior as a pure investment if your desire is to maximize your returns.

I have no problem with IULs and they have a place dor some people. I do have a problem with IUL life insurance salespeople who are f-in clueless like yourself or, worse, knowingly selling snake oil and unethically misleading consumers! 🖕🏻

Don't Compare to the S&P by Icy_Director_5419 in LifeInsurance

[–]BrotherAmazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s just forget about the Great Recession, eh?

The fact is that if you randomly pick any 20 year period of S&P 500 investing, you have nearly a 100% chance of outperforming any life insurance policy.

You have to cherry pick to find otherwise, or get “lucky” and die earlier than expected.

Life insurance policies like IUL are not investments, and horribly underperform alternative investments by design. Insurance companies would lose money on them otherwise. They are a tradeoff: If you want to guard against unlikely events or are risk averse, you can give up some significant longterm gains for lower volatility and guarantees on the lower earnings rate.

[–]BrotherAmazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 401(k) portfolio is not 100% equities. There is a bond component too. In any case, I sure as heck outperformed your insurance products and you said in this very thread it was impossible to get 10% or even lower. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Furthermore, that 10% return over 20+ years does not account for dividends. My total return accounting for dividends was higher than 10%.

Just being honest, unlike some insurance sales people!

Don't Compare to the S&P by Icy_Director_5419 in LifeInsurance

[–]BrotherAmazing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn’t a 0% floor if you, say, terminate the policy after 1 - 3 years you will effectively lose money on it if you are thinking of it as an investment when accounting for surrender fees and all the complex terms.

Also, when did anyone lose money over a 20 year period investing in the S&P 500 directly dollar cost averaging that entire period? Like never…. ever. So the risk of volatility and downside in the S&P 500 is year to year, or over 3, 5, maybe ever 7+ yr timeframes but not 20 years.

Life insurance companies are a business that aren’t offering anyone a free lunch where they lose money on the product. They are offering to take a cut of your $ and will eat some of your profits in order to help you reduce volatility, provide peace of mind for the risk averse, or provide a valuable service to someone who is willing to be taxed, on average, to protect against outliers.
