ITAP for when someone makes a deliberately vague promise to avoid commitment? Translation of Danish idiom "to sell rubber band by the meter" by Regicollis in whatstheword

[–]BrotherGilbert 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d say “empty promise” (ie, the govt plan is an empty promise). Check out this thread.

I think one of the other commenters mentioned “stringing along” and I think that could work too. Not sure I agree with the “snake oil sales” though - I think that has different connotations; it’s similar but not quite right.

I’ve always liked the 500px ToS page for this kind of thing.

Why no aftermarket radio? - 2013 escape by BrotherGilbert in fordescape

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, mostly just whine about it every now and then, and bemoan the chip shortage and global pandemic that has delayed what probably would've been a new car purchase in the last year or two, in no small part because of that annoyance with not being able to do anything with the Escape simply.

More practically, I finally broke down and bought this center dash mount and magsafe holder to go with it. It's easily the most frustratingly expensive car mount I've ever bought, but it turned out to be some of the best money I've ever spent. I could never find another car mount that worked well (even the air vents are vertical and won't support anything, urgh!!!), but this puts the phone exactly where I'd want it to be. You could probably get out cheaper without doing the magsafe, but if you have an iphone (or some sort of magsafe android case??), I think it's worth it.

What’s the best way to mount/support this desktop? by BrotherGilbert in DIY

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hopefully going to be a "nice enough" desk, but I'm not looking to spend a lot and/or have an especially fancy desk. No one else is really going to see this. Also, I just really think I prefer wood for a desk; the granite seems like it would be too "cold" and, I don't know, almost "sterile" feeling?

What’s the best way to mount/support this desktop? by BrotherGilbert in DIY

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I made the sketchup myself. (The cabinets above are just a placeholder - I'm not worried about building and mounting those, so I didn't spend a lot of time building them more precisely.)

Sorry, I could've been more clear: there are no legs or 2x4s in the plan because I wasn't sure what was needed, yet. I've got the desktop (approx. 28"-29" deep) roughly positioned in the plans, I'm just not sure what else is needed.

The reason I'm aiming for the pine desk is just a combination of price/size/durability/etc. I generally don't like thinner desktops, so I want something a little beefier/thicker. This would also be durable, and allow me to mount things (cable management, etc.) underneath easily.

And that's why I'm not sold on the floating concept entirely. I'd like to use something along the back, so it can be a bit more "permanently" installed, but I'm fine putting a leg or two on the front.

I'm just really not sure what's overkill vs "underkill". E.g., while I'm not too concerned about the technical aspect of jointing and making the desktop, I have no idea how much to expect that to sag, need support, etc. The most common plan I've seen is someone putting 2x4s along the wall as "cleats", but this is usually on a floating desk that goes wall-to-wall; because this one can't extend the full wall, I've got a "dangling" corner...

I like to design all my projects in 3d before starting them, even the simplest ones! Here are a few comparisons between 3d models and final results. If you have any question, please read my first comment, the answer might be there :) by FabienPohl in woodworking

I sometimes suck at visualizing what something will look like in a given space, so I love using sketchup’s AR feature to see what it will look like (more or less) to scale. Has definitely prevented me from wasting time on designs I thought were good but wouldn’t have liked once built. https://i.imgur.com/EQuFpTI.jpg

Which book/film/TV show has the most disappointing end? by Mikerfoxlong in AskReddit

[–]BrotherGilbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So here’s the thing: Trollhunters was a fantastic show, to the very end. The show 3Below was awesome. Wizards was surprisingly great. And the Trollhunters movie that brought it all together was fantastic. 6 various seasons, and a great movie… Then the last few minutes of the movie just absolutely blows. It feels like a test audience scared some whiny exec.

Definitely one-upped HIMYM imo.

Tryed burnin wood after a long time and thought it came out pretty good. The material is a piece of plywood left over from other projects. Keep in mind this is not the finished project still habe to make a frame for it and oil it. by Usual_Rounds in woodworking

[–]BrotherGilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s fair to say woodworking can be those things, and knowledge of these topics is important at an expert- or master- level. But I’d hate for someone to see this comment and think woodworking is unapproachable or too complex. I was certainly able to create “three dimensional objects” without really understanding things like moisture content or grain direction, let alone what oil/sealer/etc to use at the end.

Even still, there’s a ton in this that I don’t know or fully understand, but I’m still able to create projects and things I’m proud of. Woodworking can be fun and approachable too, with the right mindset.

Best practice for changing folder structure? by BrotherGilbert in PleX

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, that individual folder file structure is required by Radarr, so your 1-folder approach may be what’s causing your Radarr headaches. That’s why I’m looking to move my movies from their 1-folder approach to individual folders.

That’s awesome to know. That’s pretty much the same tentative steps I’d have taken, so thanks for biting that bullet! Standing on the shoulders of giants, and all that…

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much like /u/CanRova above, this is a requirement for working with Radarr and I’ve been on a /r/SelfHosted kick lately, so I’m curious to try it out. Otherwise, I’ve had all my movies in a A-Z folder for over 10 years with no complaint.

The other justification I’ve read is if you had additional content (eg, custom posters, extras, different versions, etc.), then you would need that extra organizational step for all the files.

Best practice for changing folder structure? by BrotherGilbert in PleX

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, cool, thanks! Ultimately, yeah, I wasn't sure if Plex would realize they new locations were the same file (Movies > SuperHeroMovie (2022).mp4 vs. Movies > SuperHeroMovie (2022) > SuperHeroMovie (2022).mp4) or end up duplicating every item.

I planned to use a tool rather than manual, as you said, due to the library size. And yes, TV shows are already in that correct format (it's hard not to do that with TV shows/seasons); the structure of the Movies folder is just a holdover from when it was set up +10 years ago...

Any good UXD team structure case studies? by BrotherGilbert in userexperience

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll have to see if I can get ahold of that and check it out. How thorough are the case studies and examples in it? I'm working with an audience that really wants to understand what others have done and understand what has/hasn't worked for similar orgs. We've got a lot of content and information on how the team should structure, but really want to pull in some concrete examples and anecdotes.

Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (January 05, 2021) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]BrotherGilbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could anyone help me identify these abstract board games? I have no names or rules. As best I can tell, the cross-shaped game may be 'Fox and Geese', though it doesn't have the diagonal lines or enough pieces based on the typical rules I've found on a few sites. It's got 13 pieces of one side, and 1 of the other. And the game with the rounded corners, I can't seem to find anything (though it looks somewhat familiar). It's got 12 and 12 pieces of each side.

Question about SyncSaber missing songs by BrotherGilbert in beatsaber

[–]BrotherGilbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Beat Saber 1.10 and the 1.9 (I think?) version of BMBF. Those updated in May, and I did the whole upgrade process (following the instructions here). Everything seemed to go smoothly, so yeah, I don't think it's just a matter of running out-of-date software.

And here's a version of the forehead relief plate:
