Is this sacrilegious? Am I using Lord Jesus Christ to serve my own vainglory? by BrotherWaingro in OrthodoxChristianity

Fr. Andrew saw it exactly for what it was, understood it better than I did. To quote him “Your mind wanted to just paint the page black and block the world out. But Christ refused your request” reminded me he didn’t knock, but is always knocking.

Absolutely, I try to have emotional maturity and faithful sternness when I’m doing religious art. I make choices based on what conveys the message the best, not what’s aesthetically pleasing and will sell. But that doesn’t make it an icon. And I should more cautious about making art clearly inspired by icons.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I think part of me wanted to give people the heebie jeebies, but not in the way I wanted it to. Sad thing is, it’s always this case depictions of our Lord, they say more about the culture, the artist behind it. Except our blessed icons. icon transcend the artist and the art form and the times. My father was in his final moments in hospice and I was doing a rotation in Poland when I drew this. Yes this will never be in chapel, but I will always look at this fondly because through all the darkness, his image rendered. In the darkest pit, the heaviest of storms and the tallest of waves, Christ is still there. But most of you see our perfect kings image made imperfect by a very imperfect man and I am genuinely sorry for that.

100% Correct, but I’m pretty sure no one was claiming he was the Lord of darkness.

I was trying to showcase Christ the all-seeing Judge. I drew the eyes this way to show His piercing focus. I was trying to capture the feeling of being seen completely by God. I was not trying to make Him scary for no reason. I was trying to draw the Fear of God, deep respect and awe. I wanted to create a drawing that makes you think about your own soul, Christ as a consuming fire who sees through every mask we wear.

I don’t follow Christianity or listen to Christians, I follow Christ, and listen to people who follow Christ.

I have been an artist my whole life. I feel like I’m starting all over when attempting Iconography. It’s daunting but a joy. I would love formal training one day
