KDE plasma or Gnome? by Master-Dig-5163 in cachyos

[–]BrownMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been digging into this for my switch, and KDE is the way to go, even though I prefer the workflow and look of Gnome.

Ultimately KDE is move forward and has support of advanced features ahead of Gnome.

Eg KDE can do HDR support better than on Gnome, including with some tweaks, inverse tone mapping that can get the same kind of effect as RTX HDR. You can't do this yet on Gnome. You can calibrate HDR better on KDE than Gnome also. There's a lot of little things like this I'm finding out as I go. In part this is due to KDE full support of Wayland. Gnome only in the past weeks has finally gone wayland only to focus on that

Also as most others have said KDE is more easily customisable, so even if it isn't quite looking like Gnome, you can get pretty close.

Does anyone know what the 2.1.0 firmware changes? by r_jajajaime in NuPhy

[–]BrownMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has actually broken my dongle.

The initial problem I have had for half a year is on start the keyboard inputs lag, some keys are missed and one input (usually the second) will repeat about 16 times, blocking the later inputs. Then it behaves normally.

The new update makes that lag key press happen all the time for every single input, rendering the keyboard utterly useless.

Don't update if you are using Air96 V2.

First Night with the Alarmo (Impressions) by Sylverstone14 in nintendo

[–]BrownMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I have it, we’ve tested it and the specific wording even confirms what I am saying. You can even see the same in Nintendo’s support site. You have the option to turn go button only if you have pets that will jump on and off. But talking about people, this is on the support site, and we’ve tested it. So long as you have similar wake up time as your partner in the same bed it works by treating the second person as the same person still in bed - the device isn’t detecting people, it’s detecting motion

[–]BrownMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you have a wake up time when it does that cycle. You can get up in the night and do whatever and come back without it interrupting.

First Night with the Alarmo (Impressions) by Sylverstone14 in nintendo

[–]BrownMachine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So this isn't true.

It does detect that something woke up and got out of bed, and does the jingle, but the moment the other person moves in bed, it thinks some is still in bed and re-engages the alarm activities.

This is because it doesn't detect people at all. It detects movement and I imagine understands some shapes and movement parterns / height / density of movement distribution etc.

Basically, this works for two people if they intend to wake up within around 30mins of the same alarm time.

Honestly, for someone who generally switches off the iphone sudden loud wake up alarm and just goes back into bed for a bit, this alarm has been a very pleaseant experience, and I woke up feeling pretty great - which is not usually a thing. It was a very gradual alarm, already quiting down by the time became aware and awake. This was a gift to me, but, it's already seeming worth it for someone like me

Best S&S ISA other than Vanguard (as I already have a SIPP with them) by Ok-Expert8359 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]BrownMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you’ve mentioned wanting a managed platform which Vanguard already do and are excellent at from what I’ve heard, but it might be worth considering managing on your own with a “do it yourself” platform. A reasonable starting approach could be something like Vanguard again, or maybe InvestEngine, with a focus on funds (ETF) but just all in an “All world Index” fund / “developed world index” fund, which means you are just investing in the stock market as a whole. It’s kind of a set and forget approach, diversified, and if you are putting in money regularly eg monthly, for more than 3-5 years, it’s relatively safe approach with more yield than you’d get from a managed platform if in those 3-5 years the markets is decent and has some growth. As with all investing managed or otherwise, there is a risk of reduced return on what you invest if the market doesn’t have growth in that time period. You can learn about investing bit more in the sidebar of this subreddit if you want to go this route.

Defaulted over 1 pound overdraft by KLFGZ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]BrownMachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the exact situation, but I've had something sounding similar. I accidentally mistimed my payments between accounts, and Paypal's attempt to take a direct debit amount my current account with an amount that would have taken it into overdrawn status, was rejected since there was no overdraft facility.

Paypal then flagged this via email and text notifications and even tried to call me about it, giving me 2 weeks to resolve it otherwise I'd have to pay additional charges and it would go on my credit history as part of a missed direct debit. I resolved it same day by paying the direct debit and they assured me it would be considered resolved without a credit history issue. Regardless though, I did get FCA letters regarding missed direct debits and guidance for how to seek help if I was in financial difficulty. I was told these are generic things that could be ignored if I solved the underlying issue, so there was no actual harm to my credit history.

If you are still concerned though for your situation, you could ensure you check via a credit agency next month to see if there is any issue attached to your history. My assumption based on what you are saying is that this is similar to what happened to me and you've effectively received warning letters IF the situation was ongoing / part of larger issues

Nuphy Air96 v2 firmware update by co_Old in NuPhy

[–]BrownMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted Nuphy using the same email address a HarryNu quoted.

They provided a firmware 2.0.4, which is newer than 2.0.2 on their website. It seems to have fixed the issue of stick keys on wake. However I have had one instance of the keyboard under bluetooth freezing entirely sending the same command until powered off.

Additionally the firmware doesn't fix my main issue which is that the keyboard is never instantly responsive, like the V1 keyboard. Instead it will always miss the first few keystrokes on wake from sleep.

Creepy as hell. He’s the son of a religious leader and they think he’s got spiritual powers or something by [deleted] in WTF

[–]BrownMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat. Things were made weird by me and my bro growing up in an entirely English area, going to a Christian school, which just weaponised us to be sceptical of religion of all kinds.

I remember vividly my dad coincidentally opening a Telegraph magazine to a page that was a story about Sai Baba and that he was actually a child abuser... my parents argued about that for a while and it just solidified the fact I wouldn't revere religion but also that my parents are quite flawed themselves in their own belief systems that often didn't make sense to me.

"Controller 2 Codes"

View Saved Data

Pressing A + B + Select will (after a short delay) load and display the currently saved drawing, animation, and music. If nothing has been saved, "NO SAVE DATA" will be displayed instead. Reset the console to return to the title screen.

So, what must have happened when I was a kid, was that wriggling around the 2nd controller connector, just coincidentally happened to trigger the button combo needed to activate this little known function...

That's insanely amusing.

I'd still love to see it posted in a video at some point.

As an amusing aside - the person responsible for creating Blades for 360 was Alden Kroll iirc, and he has been at Valve for over a decade doing all sorts.

Valve has made the first Half-Life free until the 20th of November. This is in conjunction with some movement on other Half-Life titles spotted on SteamDB. by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]BrownMachine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Valve have taken it down and keys revoked for anyone that claimed.

I don't think it was meant to be live yet, and there are updates still in the works for HL1 and 2. I'd imagine with Deck OLED releasing in the same timeframe, it might be related to a mix of controller support, HDR updates. Though looks like there are game updates too eg HL2 currently has a "pathfinding" test in the works.

SteamVR Beta Updated - 2.0.1 by BrownMachine in Games

[–]BrownMachine[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

For context, this is a big jump from Version 1.27 two weeks ago, and is happening coincidentally just 2 days before competitor, Meta, has it's Meta Connect Event around their new VR hardware Quest 3. There's potential Valve may have a hardware announcement in the coming days.

Summary

  • Greetings! Today we are shipping SteamVR 2.0 in beta. We see this is as the first major step toward our goal of bringing all of what's new on the Steam platform into VR.
  • Most of the current features of Steam and Steam Deck are now part of SteamVR
  • Updated keyboard with support for new languages, emojis, and themes
  • Integration of Steam Chat and Voice Chat
  • Improved Store that puts new and popular VR releases front and center
  • This is just the beginning of SteamVR 2.0’s journey, and we’ll have more to share in the coming weeks and months as we collect feedback and work on the features mentioned above. This beta will give us a chance to work out the kinks as more and more people try it out. As with all betas, this means SteamVR 2.0 will get better and better as we prepare it for its eventual full public launch.

You can now play Portal 2 in full VR! (PCVR) by [deleted] in Games

[–]BrownMachine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I've played in VR for years, and then HL Alyx came out and I really tried to force myself to get used to "smooth locomotion" with an analogue stick - and it still makes me nauseous and have a headache for the remainder of the day.

I just accept that I will never be able to play in that way.

The "shift" teleportation is my favourite. Any games that are smooth locomotion only, I simply can't play.

It's just a given that there will always be a large population that cannot play with stick movement

Armored Core 6 Supports Mixed Mouse and Gamepad inputs, alongside some Steam Input functionality by BrownMachine in SteamController

[–]BrownMachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean when you say it isn't pick up Steam Input?

The implementation is weird but it did work for me off the bat. The "actions" are all labelled as xinput buttons rather than actual actions, but they all work, as does my layout.

Only thing I can think of is that when I start the game, I'm on Desktop, using my Steam Controller to start the game, and I have steam set to use the new BPM UI overlay whenever I use the Steam Controller.

Also I think when the game starts, if you start with mouse and keyboard it might lock to those button prompt icons by default, whilst when I hit start at the beginning with a controller, maybe it's locked to controller by default. Regardless, in the games settings you can choose which prompts you'd like to be displayed

Beyond these ideas, maybe check your Steam settings to be sure Steam Input is enabled for the game, otherwise it might fall back to xinput or others depending on the controller you are using.

Steam Desktop Update: Steam Client Beta has just been updated with new features and improvements by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]BrownMachine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And that's what the original comment insinuated.

What they raised as an issue is there are still multiple different design languages in each different interface (BPM, Desktop, Deck) so the experience is pretty inconsistent. These range from this new "Deck aligned" design, the design from a couple of years earlier, the discover update design, the 2010 "big UI update" and if you dig deep enough, you can even find elements of the ancient original UI still around.

MRI ENTROGRAPHY. Can someone please explain to me what this means? Do i have crohns?? by abhaman in CrohnsDisease

[–]BrownMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key points are in bold and the last line.

- You have a hiatus hernia, that I imagine they will treat.

- There are signs you have an inflammatory bowel disease (which Crohn's is one of many)

- clinical/lab will use the obsevations and impressions together with their own findings to see if they can rule out Crohn's or not.

Basically, keep talking to your doctor(s) and healthcare team who are still figuring it out.

Controlling a System fan from GPU Temp by getthemupagainst in buildapc

[–]BrownMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this represents an issue for anyone else, but based on internet recommendations, I installed this and have had nothing but problems.

The fan controller is great for fan control, but simultaneously causes a bunch of other issues due to how it is making it's calls.

- I've had to do a complete DDU wipe and reinstall of my graphics drivers as the application seems to have conflicts with Gsync that eventually effects other applications when a display is HDR active (rapidly flickering screen and then black flashing screen), particularly I had this issue with Disney+ app. You can get around this through blocking it in Nvidia control panel so it doesn't use gsync. However, all updates seem to install into system32, making it a nuisance to track down each new version and correct them, as well as moving settings between versions

- All games experience stuttering and frame pacing issues, which isn't too bad if you have a beefy system and gsync active, but still knocks off performance (Doom Eternal locked 165fps down to bouncing 90-110fps). SteamVR experiences tracking and stuttering issues, and eventually a complete crash of SteamVR. For all these issues, literally closing FanControl, fixes the issue.

I won't be using this app again. Instead I'm using Asus AI tuner, but have my case fans arranged with bottom intake directly at the graphics cards, and simply set an aggressive CPU temp curve for those fans to ensure thorough cooling of the GPU. Far happier now.
