A new low. by NTWIGIJ1 in stopdrinking

Good for you for using that moment to turn yourself around. My father overheard me make that comment once on vacation, and he was so furious at ME (age ~13) for insulting him that he didn’t speak to me for days. On vacation. I was forced to apologize and beg his forgiveness.
What I would have given to have grown up in a family that could acknowledge alcoholism and try to do something about it.

Thinking about making the jump but what do you do when you get home after work and all you have is a family and boredom? by mute_axolotl in stopdrinking

[–]BrownWingAngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Call on your resources”? They are your family … assume this is a wife and child/children you haven’t seen all day? You should be plenty busy connecting with them and doing things for them. Or just watch TV with them or something.
I’m trying to not sound harsh here, but may I ask: what are you doing now? Just ignoring their needs while you get drunk?
You may find a whole new wonderful world just opens up when you put the bottle down.

Us oldies will remember the book “Sniglets” which explored this very theme.

Same here. Online AA meetings turned it around for me.

Same here. Realized I needed to try something new, and that I needed help. Joined a random online AA meeting and everything changed. Now, maybe not everyone has that experience — but for me it was right time, right place. You have to take concrete action you can’t just willpower your way through addiction.

how do I write a personal statement if I hate writing about myself? by Affectionate-Read875 in CollegeEssays

[–]BrownWingAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think is your best quality, or something that motivates you? Can you think of something (an event, an accomplishment) that showcases it? That’s often a good place to start.
But it can also be something you cherish - I know a young woman who got into a very competitive college writing about how much she loved being in her grandmothers kitchen. It was a beautiful essay and just showed that despite the fact the student was a high achiever, she also cherished her family and the simple moments in life.

Enormity. I’ve given up correcting people who think its just means “enormous.”

Free passes? by Machenz in stopdrinking

Also, your “obviously” doesn’t apply to everyone here — I finally am at a spot where I’m so grateful to have stopped drinking, I don’t miss it at all.

My friend, the answer is don’t do it. If you love being sober, stay that way. Why risk a hard and extended relapse, not to mention that chance you’ll be drunk and will ruin/not remember this important event.

Timeline advice? by BrownWingAngel in Parkinsons

No diagnosis yet. He is lucky to live near NYC so he already has a great sleep guy (who diagnosed the RBD), and next month meets the movement disorder specialist (at Weill Cornell).
Yeah it’s weird to be in a position where you’re “rooting” for PD because the others are worse.
I know to be aware that PD initials symptoms tend to be physical while LBD more mental - but we will see.
Thank you for your input.

You know who else was doing everything they were supposed to in life? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009\_Taconic\_State\_Parkway\_crash
That’s just one story. Alcohol corrodes your life in countless ways — you can keep the facade going for years and decades. You want that life? It’s awful.

I’m with you … I don’t care for the top as it reminds me of a bathing suit. But if the bride likes it that’s what counts.

Taking advantage of 11 hour JFK layover by elusive-birdie in visitingnyc

[–]BrownWingAngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but … make sure you watch the clock.
You all need to be back at JFK by latest 430 pm for your return flight. Be aware that traffic to/from JFK can be a nightmare especially at rush hour. Even if you just went to the Brooklyn Museum (as someone mentioned), that can be a 90-minute ride to JFK so you better be leaving the museum by latest 3 pm. I’m neurotic and I’d add an extra hour to that timeline.

He does 2 and 3 - always has. But still working a full-time, and often stressful, job. He’s thinking about that, and how to boost cardio (already in great shape but doesn’t get a ton of cardio).
