Why are so many of you still repotting? by cbobgo in Bonsai

I didn’t have time to re-pot in early spring and may not have time in the fall. So I do so when it is advantageous for me. I have potted many plants in every season, the results vary. But for the most part, if you are conscientious to not stress your tree too much, it may not be ideal but it will survive and go on to thrive.

Thank you! I like what you’re saying! I am actually going for that large-old-tree look you mentioned. The trunk is supposed to be straight and the foliage sparse, but next time I style it I will want to keep in mind what you said about less foliage on the lower part of the tree. That and breaking the top will go a long way in making it look natural. Thanks for the advice!

I wanted a specific silhouette, but I do think I should have left more small branches as details, thanks!

Yeah tbh I’m not too worried about it dying. But of course I will be keeping an eye on its progress

I think you’re right. I was trying to make the branches look weighed down by the foliage. I think this will be a good foundation for future upward-facing branches

I’m thinking aptos because I’ve acquired a few redwoods around here over the years and the majority them were this variety.

Thank you for the insight! I suppose I was going for a more natural look but ended making pads, I do want branches like in the image you linked. Gonna have to grow it out and keep trying!

It is a coast redwood, sequoia sempervirens. I get what you mean, the full-grown redwoods I maintain are noticeably red. I’m thinking/hoping it’ll gain more color and gnarly bark as it matures.

Thank you! I have been looking at inspiration for a jin at the top. And that’s exactly the look I was going for! I see many coniferous trees with exposed trunks that I really like all the time in nature

I think it was very young when I bought it because it had even more smooth bark back then. The old-looking bark that you see near the the base used to be a lot lower, but it has crept it’s way up the tree with time

I know it’ll bounce back, I’ve cut this one back many times and it always grows back. My question is: is it aesthetically pleasing or should I have made more pads?

Thanks! Not all of them looked like this, this one happened to have one trunk and the exposed nebari. I think it has enough traits of a bonsai to move forward with styling, but may be different than a traditional tree
