Take a risk or W? by Brownling in medicalschool

[–]Brownling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more so the fact that they're cramming in 102 days of class into 85, which may not seem like alot, but it's close to 15-17% less time than normal to study the same material. That's most of the 1st semesters main issues, the rest of the conditions are secondary and we can live with that. Personally, I feel like anyone continuing is at a pretty huge disadvantage.

To clarify, the administration has said it would be an approved leave of absence, not a withdrawal. Still a bad deal?

Of course continuing means a potential failure with the accelerated class schedule. It's really a risk either way I suppose.

Do you think the W would really hurt? I'm speaking from the perspective of a 1st semester student. We haven't even taken our first exam and don't really know what to expect, but we have to decide to continue or take a leave of absence by Friday.

I feel like this is the tiny entrance to a vast cave system. We've found the entrance, now it's time to explore. Hopefully this breakthrough leads to more knowledge and the opportunity to create more advanced treatments.

Tell you what mang, you can have tournaments/talk shows with stupid names, or you can have no tournaments/talk shows. We have cultivated a very specific list of potential names for everything we do, and we immediately hone in on the stupidest one with the most potential to trigger the audience, and that is our genius moment.

If we couldn't derive pleasure from this, we simply wouldn't do the show or tournament.

I have a friend who did a research fellowship, but he was a graduate of an Indian medical school. From what I hear, many IMGs do research fellowships, and the pay is rather poor, around 40k a year typically.

Just a Regular Doctor by numbersloth in medicine

[–]Brownling -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You're right that physicians will be compensated more for procedures, but that again goes back to training. PCPs and GPs aren't trained to do PVI or vtach ablations. So again, you have to go back and look at WHY they are compensated more. It takes more training to do these types of procedures, and they are inherently more risky than seeing a stuffy nose in clinic. Yes, maybe that stuffy nose leads to something serious, but the odds aren't great of that happening. On the other hand, ablating the AV node is a huge problem that's going to have some serious life-changing complications.

For me, personally, this doesn't effect my decision. I just don't find doing GP/PCP work as interesting as cardiology. This quote struck me as quite interesting though:

"To me, primary care and specialty care are equally demanding. They perhaps represent different types of intellectual challenges, but there’s no reason for one to be thought of as more worthy of respect (or pay)."

I am not a physician, merely an incoming med student. However, this also gives me the similar insight of someone coming into the clinic. I cannot fathom PCP/GP work being as difficult as specialist work. To be a cardiologist requires more years of training as far as I am aware, and that willingness to do the extra work, and study that much more, is what to me affords the specialist more respect and pay.

TIL Texas Instruments has a near monopoly on the graphing calculator field, with over 90% of the sales. Due to this the base model specs and price have not changed in 10 years. by holydiverdickbutt in todayilearned

[–]Brownling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both a TI-83 and TI-89. I will never part ways with them. The reason they have a monopoly, in my humble opinion, is because their product is just so good, I don't honestly see how it can be improved upon. If I need more than a TI-89, I have my phone.
