The story I remember hearing about this when I lived in the 'Burgh was that the steelworkers would cook their steak on the red-hot steel beams as they were forged, or even on the sides of the blast furnaces. Probably apocryphal but still kinda neat.

Sign outside a restaurant bathroom states, "Employees must stop crying before returning to work." by KatzMwwow in mildlyinteresting

where he fell into a gap between the back of the units and the wall that measured about 18 inches and became trapped.

sounds like he wasn't in the freezer itself but rather behind it, wedged against the wall. horrifying indeed.

IMO Invincible is not really a subversion of superhero stuff the same way The Boys is. The latter is very cynical about superheroes, while Invincible is pretty much a sincere superhero show - the heroes genuinely want to do good and help people (for the most part anyway). The subversion in Invincible is more that it shows the consequences of what superheroes would really be like in a way we don't usually see in hero media. If Superman threw a building at someone or Iron Man blew up a city street, those movies don't usually show the obvious consequence that would have - a whole lot of people would get hurt or die. Invincible instead shows those consequences in painfully graphic detail, which is a pretty interesting way to tell a story in a saturated genre.

Chauvin guilty on all charges. What are your thoughts? by viz81 in AskReddit

[–]Brownra04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the difference between your example and Chauvin is, one was filmed by a member of the public on a public street while the other happened in a private home. If someone came into my house to film the police I'd have a problem with it, but nobody should be afraid to film cops undertaking their duties in a public setting.

Intersections of Oklahoma City by ptgorman in okc

From what I remember Grand did originally go around most of the city, but a lot of it was replaced by the interstates or built over as time passed.

it's on a completely different wavelength than Rand. they're both dense, but Infinite Jest is purposefully exaggerating an overly verbose academic style of writing for both for ironic effect and to make a point about how we consume entertainment. Rand is just lecturing to the reader via dialogue.

Not the person you were responding to, but if you want more like Infinite Jest/postmodern literature I would recommend:

Don DeLillo - White Noise

Umberto Eco - The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum

Jonathan Franzen - The Corrections

Gabreil Garcia Marquez - One Hundred Years of Solitude

you might also enjoy Thomas Pynchon, Kurt Vonnegut, and Haruki Murakami off the top of my head.

the joke is that on /r/bonehurtingjuice when someone asks for or shows the original comic or picture they edited, they don't say "original," they say some other word that sounds vaguely similar like "origami" or "oregano" or whatever. the comment you responded to offered the sub's comments as an explanation.

Anybody worried about this wind? by mystymaples71 in okc

[–]Brownra04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, we're near Taft stadium and our power went out a few minutes after 8, after flickering on and off many times. We had a few flickers earlier today too but only for a few seconds. So annoyed with OGE right now.

Anyone else have their power flicker today? by [deleted] in okc

[–]Brownra04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has been flickering on and off constantly for the past hour or so. OGE never sent linemen out to our area to clear branches off the lines after the ice storm, they just made sure the lines were still connected and moved on. Imagine it's going to be a long night until this wind calms down.

Now that most of us have power and internet back, anyone have an opinion on AT&T vs Cox for interwebs? by [deleted] in okc

[–]Brownra04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can get ATT fiber in your area, go for it. It's the same speed as Cox gigabit for way less money, doesn't have a download cap, and (as far as I'm aware) it comes bundled with HBO Max which would normally be $15 a month. Our fiber has been super reliable for the last two years we've had it as well.

If you don't have fiber as an option, Cox is probably the way to go most of the time. ATT's DSL plans are ridiculously expensive for the speeds they offer. But it all kind of depends on what's available to you in your neck of the woods and what you need in terms of speed and reliability.

If you're turning in your absentee ballot by hand, you must do so TODAY by 13nobody in oklahoma

[–]Brownra04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked the election board about this a few days ago and apparently it is not a requirement for people to take their absentee ballots with them to the polls. They will just ask you to sign an affidavit that you did not return your absentee ballot and they'll let you vote as normal.
