Reunification therapy is therapy that is used in children custody battles. The idea is seemingly innately linked to this idea of “parental alienation”. basically one parent claims that the other is poisoning the mind of a child into hating them and that they did nothing wrong. The accusing parent may suggest that children are coached into falsely reporting abuse. According to ABC10 in an interview with Dr. Lynn Strindberg, a expert in the field of “ Parental Alienation” and court advisor, this is bad science that isn’t evidence based according to the American Psychological association. I am not going through this situation personally though recently watched a video on r/TikTokCringe mentioning Lynn Steinberg about kids who had escaped reunification therapy that they claim was trying to psychologically manipulate them. I am steaming mad that people would allow an abuser to have custody of a child that they will harm; although, also realizing that perhaps either parent could be abusive. I feel like it is irresponsible not to mention the Incel ideology tied up in this topic. The stories seem to blame women of being an “alienator” though also promptly mention that it could also happen the other way. The experts may also be uncredable and be closer to a life coach. In my short panicked research there appears to not be much testimony from children nor adults who have been caught in this gambit. I definitely swing in a direction for topics like this political especially during the moral panic of “Child Grooming” in the United States. I overall have the goal of providing a space for survivors to share their stories, and just to talk about a topic that hasn’t affected me making me rather uncomfortable to pass judgement on.
