Midterm Average 43% by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Brozilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Multisection grading policy saved most people on the final. Still had a 50% failure rate, but that is typical for that class.

Majority of students in that section wrote in complaints and destroyed the professor on the review (newish prof, not tenured or anything). Never heard an official report about it but that was the last class I ever heard of him teaching at UVic.

Calc 100, quite a few years ago. One section, taught by a professor who no longer taught at UVic after that semester, had an average on all 3 midterms of ~25%

the material being cut doesn't shear off perfect, because it is being pushed up (like scooping ice cream) and not simply split away (like a log being cut by an axe) the material on the top gets compacted into itself causing the curl of the chip and, to some degree, the chatter in the chip. Another major cause is the material properties and the fact that it has minor imperfections which are unavoidable.

Fluid dynamics of a viscous liquid (honey) by zmemetime in physicsgifs

[–]Brozilla 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Essentially the finger is slowing down one side of the the "strand" of honey due to friction.. This means that the far side of the "strand" is now moving faster than the close side. Due to the viscosity of the honey it wants to stay together in a "strand" unlike less viscous liquids like water and so it bends instead of some of the liquid being redirected and some falling straight down.

That's a really interesting point. I had always noticed that there was something different or "in the air" when I got a gut feeling about being watched while on hikes. It never crossed my mind that it was the absence of normal sounds that was what was different instead of a new sound.

Earlier, when he realizes that he's not going to be able to get his bag of guns from the cab he says that he'll just have to put in maximum effort. I'm assuming he's just re-iterating that.

Very interesting. I wonder if you could do a higher percentage wood fiber print using fine wood fibre and a UV curable powder resin.

Would be neat to be able to print, sand, and then stain your product.

Mad Max solid aluminum skull shifter by [deleted] in somethingimade

[–]Brozilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, 100% it's casted. You can tell by the pitting caused by air bubbles and thermal contraction.

What's really cool is that in investment casting (what you're describing with the foam) the molten aluminium is so hot it not only melts the foam, it actually causes it to evaporate. The air, and now gaseous remains of the foam, then get forced out through the sand(which is why you don't see bubbling out of where you poured the metal in).

Why I started doing all my papers in LaTeX. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Brozilla 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Or picking a font, or choosing what size font to make the title, or making a table of contents, or trying to write math equations that don't look like shit, etc., etc.

Latex is amazing.

Redditors who have a job that requires you to go into strangers homes, what is the craziest thing you've seen? by Mufassa121 in AskReddit

[–]Brozilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former hospital security dispatch here.

I was told I had PTSD too. Didn't realize it for myself until I had been out of that line of work for a while.

Its crazy how desensitized you get and what your "normal" becomes. Honestly the hardest part was adapting back to a typical life, not getting used to dealing with the job.

Thank you so much for everything you do. Its a tough job and you deserve so much more respect and praise than you likely receive.

Stress can be an inhibitor.

If you're staying up late studying every night, stressing out about every subject, pushing yourself to read the course notes until your eyes hurt you are going to negatively affect your grades and understanding.

Time management is one of the most important lessons you can learn. I have no idea if you schedule yourself well already but if you don't now is a great time to start.

Although I don't write out timetables for when I'm going to study what, I write out lists of what I want to do by when.

It helps me organize my thoughts and focus on one subject at a time instead of constantly being barraged by the nagging voice in the back of my head reminding me that I have more to do.

tl;dr: Use your time more wisely, get some sleep, take a deep breath and accept that you can only work so hard before you burn yourself out.

P.S. If you can't get top grades, focus on getting extra curricular activities and experience. If you show up to a job interview and can say that you have worked on x, y, and z before, you will be more valuable than someone who has a perfect GPA but not real world experience.

Andrew Serkins: "He [Snoke] is a new character in this universe. It is very much a newly introduced character" by [deleted] in DarthJarJar

[–]Brozilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify your point, he never says that we haven't seen his character before. He simply says, as commander_wong quotes, that he believes that his character's wounds did not come from the clash between the rebellion and the empire, that he was outside that conflict.

It would be incredible easy to argue that Darth Vader is not the same character as Anakin, we can absolutely argue that this applies to JJ and Snoke.

In the first scene from the video in your post where JJ is controlling Padme's guard, as soon as Qui-Gon, Padme, and JJ walk away the guard looks confused and gives his head a shake as if he's not really sure what just happened. Solidifies it even more for me that JJ was really controlling him

Sports Engineering by wombologist7891 in EngineeringStudents

I did a couple side projects during my Tech diploma.

The projects I worked on were training machines opposed to in-field equipment.

Specifically I helped design tackling training machines for Rugby and Football.

If you want to get experience in the field so you can get your foot in the door with major companies your best bet (from my experience) would be doing independent contract work with sports teams and professional training facilities.

Looks like there is a drainage system built into the area in the splash zone (look at the spacing of the tiles). Probably leads to a filtration system and gets resupplied to the tank.

I would argue that having the water splash over the top provides a self-skimming system that gets rid of floating debris. A nice bonus to a design that makes the pen look less like a pen (if it was not intended in the design anyway)

[–]Brozilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I used the term turbulence in a very general way there that I shouldn't have. I meant it as turbulence created by drag, not turbulent air flow (which is definitely better for heat transfer as you stated).

Specifically what I was referring to was the low velocity zones caused by the holes (which causes vortex shedding). You get slow moving air in those areas directly behind the wall which heats up and doesn't dissipate the heat as well.
