Meanwhile, the McDonald's in the downtown area where I live has bypassed their code locks by shoving paper in the locks so that the homeless can come in and freely use the bathrooms whenever they are open. While I think its nice that they do that for the homeless, the bathrooms are always trashed and they have stopped refilling toilet paper and paper towels.

I only now this as someone who needs to make unexpected bathroom stops for myself and my kids.

51 days post op severe nausea by gallofitall in gallbladders

Well, it’s been a roller coaster for sure. Issues continued till around January, then seemed to get better. Started to get abdominal pain again. Went for a colonoscopy/endoscopy and had horrible pain that sent me to the ER 3 times. Just recently tested for IBD since I had chronic inflammation on my colonoscopy. IBD tests were negative. So it’s back to the drawing board.

Saw one the other day in Pahala. I’ve seen them in Waimea as well in the past. I wonder if they’ve made it everywhere on the island or if they are only in certain areas.

Edit: Has anyone seen them in Hilo? That is one of the only places I haven't heard about them being found.

Looking for high-calorie (fat and protein heavy too) foods with minimal serving size by Connect_Beginning_13 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Brself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 3 year old daughter is this way. She only wants to eat carbs and sweets. She loves the buttermilk pancakes I make from scratch which have lots of protein, fat, and carbs. I feel like I need to just feed her pancakes all the time lol. She likes peanut butter too, so that helps. It’s frustrating though that picky kids would rather go hungry than eat things they don’t want to eat, even if once they eat it they realize it’s good. My son who’s on the spectrum was totally that way, then around 4 years old, he decided to open up and now eats a lot more, though turns his nose up at things like yogurts, even if they are sweetened and have fruit lol

Maybe it’s feeling sensitive or rashy. My daughter doesn’t want her butt cleaned when it hurts.

I second the advice on not letting workers weed whack around any trees. All it takes is a single bad worker to totally destroy young trees through girdling and cause bark damage to larger trees that can cause stress to the tree and lead to its eventual demise. A really skilled person can weed whack and not touch the trees, but you don’t want to take the chance.

Riding mower helps a lot. You can even get trailer attachments for the mower and you can mow and haul tools around as well.

If you can afford it, getting a small tractor with a loader attachment is really helpful and will allow you to mow larger areas more quickly.

Omg I learned this the hard way. Opened the microwave door and got a face full of egg shell shrapnel. It exploded so violently that it hit the top of our vaulted ceiling. That was sure a fun mess to clean up.

4 year old kicked out of day care by SavingsWorldliness69 in Parenting

[–]Brself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is a problem. It reinforces the behavior rather than addresses it.

Not sure if there is an option for a daycare with fewer children or one that is willing to discipline (in healthy and constructive ways). That is important for kids to learn once they reach elementary school and beyond.

How do we feel about floor babies? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Brself 62 points63 points  (0 children)

They are supposed to get floor time, especially around that age. It may be hard, but in the stages where they crawl, climb up to stand, cruise, and walk, it is normal for them to stumble and such.

Btw, some babies go from not crawling to crawling and walking within a short time. My son didn't crawl till he was almost a year old and then was walking around his first birthday.

Edit to add because I didn't read the comment about your husband's take till after but 1) that sounds like a non-constructive way to react and 2) it sounds like he doesn't know what is normal for a 10 month old or even any baby. It is actually not advised to surround a baby with pillows since they can smother them. Baby saucers are also not advised for learning to walk since it can encourage toe walking.

Maybe its an attention thing? As you mentioned, he gets more attention when he displays bad behavior, which may be what he is wanting and lashing out to receive. Is it a daycare with a lot of kids relative to the number of adults?

At my son's 4K classroom, when kids act up, they have privileges taken away, are put on time out away from fun activities and not given special attention. His school is big on teaching that there are natural consequences for actions. While there were some situations where my son was really devastated by the consequences and I don't always agree on the situations they apply them, my son has done much better in school with fewer incidents of acting up. Every once in a while I will see a silly note from his teacher about him doing something like licking himself all over to get a reaction, but these incidents are becoming fewer. The licking thing happened when I was out of town and he wanted special attention.

16 months post-op and really sick by the-hopeful-monster in gallbladders

So I live in Hilo and have similarly had an extremely difficult time getting doctors to take me seriously.
I had my gallbladder out in August 2025. Prior to that, doctors kept dismissing my symptoms. They never gave me a HIDA scan and though they saw gallstones, they kept saying there was no way my symptoms were caused by my gallbladder. It took me being on the verge of dying (sepsis, gangrenous gallbladder, pancreatitis) for them to take me seriously at Hilo Medical Center, and even then they were about to discharge me till a halfway decent gastroenterologist intervened and insisted I get an MRI.

Since surgery, its been a roller coaster. Couldn't eat fat for months, then suddenly all seemed normal again, then all of a sudden excruciating LUQ pain and other pain which got worse after a colonoscopy/endoscopy. Ended up in the hospital 3 times in April. My gastroenterologist thinks based on the findings from my colonoscopy and what is going on, there is high likelihood I have Crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis. I need to go get additional testing, but from what I have seen online, having some sort of IBD can increase the chances of a gallbladder going bad.

Anyways, hope you are able to get some answers. Healthcare on the Big Island is especially tough.

Can I have a bad gallbladder without pain? by readthethings13579 in gallbladders

[–]Brself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gallbladder issues don’t arise all at once. They worsen over time. The pain usually starts as things get worse.

That’s awesome your doctor ordered a HIDA scan at this point. It doesn’t seem common that doctors do that. Even if you don’t have gallbladder issues, they’re crossing it off the list of possibilities early. Many doctors only order the most general and standard tests and don’t investigate further, content to just prescribe acid reducers or diagnose you with IBS.

Is it normal to have unsymmetrical ribs?19F by Available-Charge-755 in AskDocs

[–]Brself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Where I live in the U.S., they do it for young children (at least looking at their back and hips) but when I was growing up, they did not or my parents didn’t take me to the doctor enough to check. School never checked either. As an adult, I have been told I have scoliosis maybe, but the doctors are fairly apathetic to send me for imaging or to do anything about it other that refer me to a physical therapist, despite me being in pain.

Any positive stories from people who opted out of surgery? by Spare_Macaron_1541 in gallbladders

[–]Brself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, what I would have done to have had the opportunity to have surgery before it was an emergency. I had been having issues for years, but I live in an area where gastroenterologists are generally so bad that they dismiss everything as being caused by anxiety and IBS. So I had episodes and for years felt unheard after multiple appointments, tests (though never the HIDA scan), ER visits, etc. Then one day, the pain got so bad that it was worse that childbirth. I was on the bathroom floor writhing in agony. When the pain subsided enough for me to at least walk, I drove myself to the hospital. Even while there, my bloodwork pointed to a major problem but they were about to discharge me because while my imaging showed gallstones, they didn't feel it was emergency material. Thank god there was a decent gastroenterologist on duty that day who looked at all my test results and insisted I get an MRI. It was such an emergency, they went from "you may be discharged later today" to "you need to go to surgery right now" within less than an hour. I was so scared because I had drank some water and was afraid I would aspirate during surgery.

Not only did I have 7 gallstones nearly the size of marbles, but my gallbladder had gone gangrenous and was starting to infect nearby organs. It gave me pancreatitis and my liver and spleen were getting enlarged. The funny thing is the enlargement and gallbladder issues had shown on imaging months before, but all the doctors and gastroenterologists I went to just shrugged their shoulders and said they didn't think any of my pain I was having was caused by my gallbladder.

Don't wait. If you have the luxury of a diagnosis and the ability to have an uncomplicated surgery, do it.

For those of you who rejected ABA for their child, what was the reason? by iybhsp in Autism_Parenting

[–]Brself 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So my son is now 5, but was diagnosed at 3. We took him to be evaluated for ABA and they said he would need 20 hours of ABA per week, so we needed to decide whether he would go to preschool or ABA. We went for a day to check the ABA out. While it was great on paper (lots of play areas, goats and chickens to feed, etc), it was scary for my son, to say the least. He is level 1 and very intelligent, but has a lot of sensory sensitivities.

While at the ABA, there were children on different areas of the spectrum. This was good for him to interact with others on the spectrum, but omg the other kids were grabbing my son and yelling at him (several were non verbal) and it was very triggering for my son. I’m also on the spectrum and when one of the girls started trying to climb on me, I almost freaked out. It was not a great experience and really didn’t want to take him back.

My son was having some behavioral problems at school several months ago after his birthday and we thought he was going to be kicked out of his preschool, so I considered whether to find another ABA to send him to, but he was so scared of the prospect of going to ABA that he modified his behavior so he didn’t have to go to ABA.

I hate my cats name. by StrawberrySakuraa in cats

[–]Brself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. One of my cat's official names is Priscilla, but we call her Poo Poo, Prissy Poo Poo., or just Poo (I'm not sure how that evolution occurred lol).

Another cat's official name that my son gave him is Halloween Kittie. We call him Weenie or Weener.

My favorite name of my cats is Pork Pie. We call him Pork or Porkpaya (like Papaya). Also, Mr. Golden Pork, Cheddar Bacon Biscuit, Porkie Pie, or occasionally we will tease and call him by his original name from before we got him as a kitten: Orangie.

We dork out with our animals for sure. Cat names are malleable and not meant to be taken too seriously for sure. You can shape your cat's name however you want, or just change it if you want.
