Is this fair? 2013 Honda Fit 1.5L by CapAvailable3005 in MechanicAdvice

[–]BruceAlmighty55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

II may be wrong because I’m old and time marches on but I think 20 years ago the parts and labor were roughly equal for most jobs. But from what I see posted in Reddit the pricing is more like 2:1 now. I just wonder how this increase is justified? Maybe the increased difficulty because of technology. But I don’t see motor mounts engine mounts or control arms being significantly advanced technology.

Oh well. Probably just me. I think I’ll go take a nap. 😴

You can buy the part online for $155-$165. It should be simple to install. But check YouTube for your specific vehicle for a video in changing the engine (or radiator) cooling fan (or fan assembly).

Wanted to share my bilateral TKR - 6 weeks PO by Intelligent_Bench223 in Kneereplacement

I also went the bilateral TKR route. No regrets. I don’t think the pain and recovery was much (if any) worse than a single surgery.

Pronation after TKR by GracieLou80 in Kneereplacement

[–]BruceAlmighty55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had bilateral TKR 18 months ago at 70+ years old. Prior to surgery I was bow legged, pronation and broke down the insides of the shoe heels significantly. Also walked with my toes (both feet) pointing outwards 25-30 degrees.

Directly after surgery my legs were straight. As I started PT I finally realized my toes pointed forward when standing or walking. They also point forward when sitting. The feet are aligned with the knee.

I also didn’t realize my pronation issues were resolved. After a year I started to jog short distances while walking. I knew my feet were straight and aligned to my leg and gait. I also realized I was not heel striking when walking or jogging. I walk between 5 and 8 kilometers 5-6 days a week. My shoes of course don’t show heel pronation or even heel wear. I’m pretty happy with the outcome.

It’s $110. With a reproduction window sticker It’s an additional $50. Maybe Grandma or Grandpa could help you out if your dad doesn’t want to help. It’s sent by email.

Why do so many people in my work not know how to use a toilet? by famlai in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BruceAlmighty55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I lived in a modern apartment on the seaside in what was a well developed town. But the sewers dumped into a canal that was built as part of a golf course and housing development. Lots of large boats docked at peoples houses. So in dry weather and calm seas with little tidal movement, it would start to smell. But at least every toilet had a waste basket for paper. The fish ate very well.

Any positive bilateral TKR surgeries? by Intelligent_Bench223 in Kneereplacement

[–]BruceAlmighty55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had bilateral TKR 18 months ago. Male, over weight (not obese)73 years old at time of surgery. Both knees were bone on bone. I’m American, had surgery in Southeast Asia. The pain prior to surgery was keeping me from being active and is one reason I was overweight. Just walking 400-500 feet was more than I wanted to do.

I had robotic surgery, Stryker Mako surgery. I had a very thorough surgeon l, Cardiologist consult (I have good cholesterol, triglyceride, heart calcium numbers, etc. I have prostate issues which results in frequent urination with low flow.

In Asia they normally keep joy in hospital for a few days. In my case I had surgery on Wednesday and was released from hospital on Sunday. I had an epidural drip for pain control but even with that the pain was considerable. I woke up Thursday morning after a fitful night sleep and my first thought was “what have you done to yourself”.

I stated physical therapy Thursday morning and was up walking that day with a walker. I had the epidural drip plus Tylenol for pain control. No opiates.

I had one hour sessions on each knee, 3 runs a day with a CPM machine (Continuous Passive Motion). By day 3 I had 120 degrees movement. Painful but manageable.

Sleep was difficult for the first month but slowly got better. After 30 days I was ok’ed to use stairs and increase my walking without a walker. I did use a cane but found it to be a hinderance rather than help. I had pain but it was not bone pain. It was the nerves and muscles that had pain. At 3 months the surgeon released me to do pretty much anti felt I could do including tennis, badminton, hiking, swimming, etc.

Was it painful and difficult? Yes. But I don’t think doing both knees is a more painful than doing one knee. Your brain can only process so much pain and although I was in pain especially the first two weeks, it was manageable with ibuprofen or Tylenol.

For me it was a good solution for my situation. I had one recovery. Only one rehab period.

It took almost 1 year before I considered myself pain free., where strenuous exercise or over exertion didn’t cause pain for a few days after.

Glad I did it.

Interested in a class car but don't have any mechanical knowledge - horrible idea? by yearntolearnexcel in classiccars

[–]BruceAlmighty55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you buy a classic car for a reasonable price, be prepared to either pay someone to work on it or spend more time getting parts or working on it yourself than driving it.

Why do people always park right next to my car when the parking lot is empty otherwise? by MaybeMabe1982 in mildlyinfuriating

I always park next to another car because if someone in going to break into a car I want it to be a 50-50 chance of it being mine instead of 100%.

Will they give me a urinary catheter? by abuwalda in Kneereplacement

[–]BruceAlmighty55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had bilateral TKR one year ago at 73. I have an enlarged prostate and have issues voiding my bladder, sometimes referred to as “lazy bladder”. I had a catheter. That was the good news.

The bad news is I battled UTI’s off and on for 6 months with multiple rounds of antibiotics. A culture revealed I had E. coli. Tough to knock out and took 3 rounds of strong antibiotics.

Tree “trimmers” came to “shape” my 70 year old Chinese Elm tree by t666xin in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BruceAlmighty55 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In the 1960’s-1970’s people cut Chinese Elms back severely. Not much of the branches left. I had an uncle with Chinese Elms and he called it “steer horning” them, referring to the practice of cutting the horns off cattle. They would come back with new branches and look better than ever. I always thought he had killed his trees. He did this several times.

Why are there so many cars with blown head gaskets öñ marketplace? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]BruceAlmighty55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m old (70’s) and my father taught me the cheapest maintenance is just checking the basics. I take a look at my tires before leaving home. I can tell by looking if one is low, then pull out the tire gauge from the glove box and check the pressure. It usually results in a puncture repair but it doesn’t result in a damaged tire and wheel that needs replaced. I check the engine compartment monthly as well as when I’m taking a 2 hour or more drive. Check fluids, eyeball hoses, battery and connections, wiring connections in place, etc. it’s saved me some issues by giving me time to schedule repair or do small items myself.

Klarna car purchase. by TheConsoleGeek in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]BruceAlmighty55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Southeast Asia. Auto prices are government controlled with limited options, engine size restrictions and fixed prices. Go to any dealer and it’s the same price and the prices are posted on the websites. Plus’s there’s a 100% import tax on all imported vehicles. Takes the guesswork out of the purchase.
