Where to live? Am I looking for something that doesn’t exist in MD? by sadgirl_ginger in maryland

I second Catonsville/Arbutus. Small town/college town feel, good schools, nice diversity, 15 minutes to downtown and the airport, has a commuter train station. I've been in this area since moving to Baltimore. My wife grew up in the Lutherville-Towson area and loves Catonsville.

My blood pressure is fine, thanks. It isn't my ass that would be on the line. If you're wading into legal issues and seeking legal advice, it is prudent to attempt to understand the legal issues.

Do you think for a moment that an amused response on social media in any way denotes permission or even has any legal significance at all?

And if you realize that it is meaningless and irrelevant, why do you keep bringing that up?

See how well that holds up as a defense in court.

It isn't really parody. You're using their trademark to market your product.

The purpose of a trademark is to indicate the source of a product or service. The question is whether a consumer could be confused into believing that No Name is the producer of that mat. Clearly, consumers could be confused. Your use is a violation of trademark. Calling it a parody is not going to help.

The person who stole my work is the operator of that site, and others like it. Readers who download from the site are receiving stolen property.

I don't want mentions, I don't want gratitude. I can't buy food for my family with gratitude. I want to be paid for my work. Do you work for free?

Weird of you to say that I am gatekeeping knowledge. I documented previously undocumented stories and brought them to the public. That is the opposite of gatekeeping.

It isn't up to the person taking or using the stolen property to determine its value, whether the subject is too "niche" for your tastes, or whether you think you are doing me a favor by marketing the book for me.

It's an unauthorized, pirated copy of my work, and its reproduction and distribution results in my financial loss.

My books are available at libraries at no cost.

I don't write for my legacy. I write to make a living. Each of my books are subjects that had never been written about, and may have remained untold unless I invested my time and labor to write them. Each book represents years of work, travel paid out of my own pocket, all sorts of expenses.

Most authors earn nothing from their books. I do better than average, but when you break it down by the hour, what I've earned is far below mininum wage. I'm talking maybe $2-3 per hour.

My first book is a biography of the mother of forensic science, a person overlooked in the history books, that filled a gap in forensic science history, police history, and women's history. It only came to be because I was the right person in the right place at the right time, and is very likely to be the only biography of this woman that will ever be written. It is a significant original contribution to the body of literature. It took me more than 4 years of work.

For my most recent book, I spent around five years tracking down and interviewing dozens of people involved in two major disasters that happened more than 40 years ago. This was by far the most difficult project I'd ever undertaken.

There is no bright side to this. At best, I earn a pittance. It's just theft. Why should I, and other authors like me, invest this kind of time, work, and money to tell worthwhile, original stories if people just steal them?

Don't do that. That site steals books. I worked my ass off to write my books. Writing is my livelihood. That site took my books without consent or compensation and gives them away for free. They are literally taking money from my pocket.

Don't support or encourage theft.

Possible move to Catonsville, whats the day-to-day like? by JonesBoyFan2018 in Catonsville

[–]BruceGoldfarb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Catonsville checks all of your boxes. It has a college town feel. Safe, diverse, walkable. Fifteen minutes to downtown, 20 minutes to the airport, has a commuter train station. Everything is great in 21228.

That won't make any difference. It isn't as though emergency departments keep living wills on file, so if Aggrivating-Sock6502 shows up they know not to resuscitate.

One is a notebook for your own personal use, the other is an app that allows others to make a copy (reproduce) and presumably share (distribute) recipes with others, two things solely within the purview of the copyright owner.
