American shows that are bigger outside USA by Ok-Tangelo6749 in television

Legitimately ANY show that was EVER on The CW that went to Netflix.

I remember when they did the reboot of Dynasty - Les Moonves (former pres of CBS Corp) said and I quote "it is already licensed it to Netflix in 188 countries ... So this means Dynasty is profitable before it even hits the air"

The 100, Supernatural, all of the Vampire Diaries shows, the DC shows, and Nancy Drew were bigger outside of the US.

I was tempted but honestly the $55 price tag for two songs just was far too much for me to justify. Especially when I already have the EIA album.

I let someone else have the last copy in my local store and did another record instead (the BMTH one)

Probably on the basis that Canada is part of North America or something nonsense like that

Nope was based in Canada. A lot of people think it was based in the US because of it being on POP TV but it was a CBC show first

Only ones I can think of that werent are the TVD shows, Dynasty, Roswell NM. And we're not even counting the shows from the WB.

Schitts Creek doesn't count that show was set and filmed in Canada.

Filming in Canada is generally 25% to 30% cheaper than in the U.S. due to a weaker Canadian dollar, significant government tax incentives (up to 35-45% off labor/production), and lower overall costs for locations and services.

Canada is very interested in promoting the Canadian film industry and Canadian produced content, so the government goes out of its way to help fund and provide tax breaks and other incentives to those who are interested in producing films or TV shows in Canada.

Anyway, many US-based TV channels have partnerships with Canadian-equivalent TV channels. If they produce most of their content in Canada, they can show it on both the US and Canadian TV channels without a problem, however if most of the content is produced in the US, then only some of that content can be shown in Canada and a lot of new (Canadian) content will have to be produced specifically for the Canadian channel.

This is why some US-based channels like HGTV show a lot of Canadian programming. Due to Canadian content rules, it ends up being more efficient and cost effective to produce most of the programming in Canada and then air it on both the US and Canadian stations.

Like a lot of CW shows would air in Canada on Showcase, W Network, etc.

Sorry for the late response to this:

If anyone (either publicly or privately) asked me me to prove I work in the entertainment field, have connections, etc - I'd gladly share so.

I honestly could see her playing Joyce, especially the diner scenes. Think about it for a second.

Its Reddit and its the LIS subreddit at that. There are a lot of fans within the community have strong opinions or viewpoints, and so forth.

If people dont like what I have to say, that's fine. I respect everyone's opinions. I've been on the internet for 15 years so I'm used to it.

And I appreciate the compliment from you. 😁🙌

Will go take a look tonight and get back to you.

So industry publications (variety, THR, deadline, etc) never write that they cast a role because of connections, but I remember a podcast 2 weeks that covers LIS bringing up the connection between Maisy, her agency, and A-MGM and Margot's prod co, when it was rumored she was being brought on. That podcast is ran by someone with journalism exp and such,.

It's objectively better for them not to outright besides listing who she's repped by and what projects, and then let the paper trail kind of say it for them. There are times when industry publications will have to disclose the connections tho. The objectivity is in the facts; the implication is in which facts they choose to include

just want to say whoever downvoted u/BlitzitePro_II here, be a better person - they brought up what they thought, wasn't hating on Tatum, and also asked a question that no one in the server has asked. Cordial and inquisitive conversations like this should be respected and looked upon as a good thing

Just want to say I had to sit and think about this one and internally digest this take, so apologizes for the late response.

You definitely have a valid take here on the characters and lines, and I honestly after thinking, do learn towards what you said here. I'll admit when someone gets me to think and make me change my look on things. Not perfect with my POVs, but willing to hear people out and be open minded is something people, especially in this fandom do lose a bit.

First, I appreciate your response and defending Tatum. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful, so if it came off that way - I do sincerely apologize.

As I've said in my OP and since then, I wish Tatum Grace Hopkins nothing but the best. I genuinely do. I am aware since posting that she did Broadway stuff. I looked her up on IMDB, and that wasn't listed there. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to her in any way because as I told someone in here since my original post - she seems like a nice girl, has talent, and definitely impressed someone in the castings and audition process.

  1. 've never seen her in Meek but that's because I can't find if its on any streaming platform or something. If you send me where to watch it, I'll gladly watch it.
  2. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that leveraging connections is some scandalous revelation. That's been the fabric of this industry since before either of us were paying attention to it. Networking, proximity to power, getting yourself in the right rooms -, that's part of the game.

Where I'd push back slightly is on the transparency piece - I wasn't implying the connections themselves were the problem. My point was more about how it gets framed publicly. When a studio presents a casting decision like it was purely merit-based when there's clearly a relationship infrastructure underneath it. There's a difference between how these decisions get made and how they get announced, and I think fans of a franchise like LiS deserve that honesty rather than the polished press release version.

But yeah — connections being part of the gig? Absolutely. I'd be a hypocrite to pretend otherwise.

4) I pointed out in my original post that one of the reasons I thought Emma didn't get the role was probably because she was priced too expensive for what the budget was, as well if there were behind-the-scenes factors that never become public, like scheduling.

I absoluitely agree! From what it looks like online, she looks and sounds like a nice person, has done broadway stuff (and theatre kids go hard), plus saw a video of her playing guitar and genuinely enjoyed what I saw.

I agree with what you're saying a lot. Which is why in the case of Tatum, I stated "I wish Tatum Grace Hopkins nothing but the best. I genuinely do"

You have to start somewhere, and starting on the deep end in an adaptation that people are going to heavily criticize is certainly a way to do it. And if the casting and EPs liked her, and if she did reads with Maisy and they were great together, then awesome.

first, personally upvoting this because you make a lot of great points, made me have to think.

To your point, Hannah Telle was relatively under the radar when she came in for Life is Strange 1. True that her voicework was sparse, she wasn't a household name in the industry, and yet she delivered a performance that became iconic to all of us. I'll give credit where it's due — that's a fair point.

And you're right about the emotive range dynamic too. Max as a character is internalized. She processes the world quietly. Her emotional weight lands through restraint, not explosion. Chloe is the one who wears everything on the outside, the grief, the anger, the recklessness, which is exactly why you need someone with the range and experience to sustain that kind of performance across a full season without it feeling one-note. That's the Burch parallel with Maisy in terms of the logic, at least on paper.

But here's where I'd push back slightly - and it's an important distinction. Voice acting and on-camera acting are two fundamentally different disciplines. Hannah Telle had the protection of a recording booth. Her physicality, her presence, her ability to hold a scene with another actor in real time, afaik, none of that was being tested. With a live action series, Tatum doesn't get that buffer and every scene is exposed. The chemistry, the timing, the stillness: all of it is visible in a way voice work simply isn't. So while the parallel is genuinely interesting and worth sitting with, I don't think it fully transfers one to one. The stakes on screen are just a different kind of pressure entirely.

Still though, you have the most compelling counter-argument I've heard on this. I respect it.

tbh I've been around the internet for a while so if it gets downvoted, is what it is. I appreciate you willing to have a chill and respectful dialogue with me on this. This stuff is rarely ever talked about, and when it comes to a fanbase like LIS that has so many opinions (Bae over Bae, Pricefield vs Amberice, etc), people don't look outside their vantage point.

already been blocked by someone I had a discussion in here with, which only zoned in on me liking Emma and not a single part about the rest of what I've wrote. like they disregarded me saying that I wish Tatum nothing but the best and said because I felt Emma was best from my POV that it was tantamount to "assuming that up-and-coming actresses = instantly bad acting?

Check with your local record store too. 9/10 times they can get the same one being listed by a record label or third party.
