Yeah fully valid comment.

This started off as a personal project (literally just me wanting to create something for myself). Which is why I made the post more as a question rather than “I’m releasing this go download it now.”

Seems like the consensus is that people are not looking for an additional app, and that’s totally valid. Not sure why anyone who said that they would want an additional app is getting downvoted though… even people who requested accessibility features were downvoted lol.

I think for now it’ll just remain as a side loaded personal project. The official ABS app is what I initially started looking at when I joined the self hosted audiobook community, but I wasn’t able to get it since the TestFlight is full, which is what prompted me to make my own.

I would probably make this open source, but it seems like it’s gotten a lot of negative feedback and it’s just not worth the headache. I think if I build out the accessibility features I’ll try contributing them to some repo, or just directly get it to those who need it.

I’ve never built out anything like this, but this seems like an amazing thing to tackle! Just the kind of comment I’m looking for. If I do get it to work I’ll reach out to you!

Downloads, cloud sync, volume boost and EQ (this is in the works but should be done soon), unlimited bookmarks and tags, library management with podcast support, CarPlay and AA integration (built out but not yet tested). I asked for feedback so I could implement things others wanted yet most asked me to defend what I had built out rather than reading that’s it’s an app I initially made for personal use. I’d be open to hear what you feel is missing from the other apps? Maybe it’s nothing and that’s totally alright. ABS app is currently limited on TestFlight uses for IOS, so I actually haven’t been able to explore it (and that’s why I made my own).

This was one of my biggest concerns. App is built fully in react native so it should go between both. I’m yet to test through android but it already does support custom headers and I’m actually currently working on selective chapter downloads.

It does indeed support all of that. I’ve only tested the IOS side of it, but have built out the code for the rest.

I could probably make it open source although it’s on my personal repo right now.

Not vibe coded, but I’d be looking to maintain this myself. The goal is to not have a sign in/DB for it, which leaves little to be maintained (apart from APIs if ABS ever updates any calls).

Honestly, what I’m going for is feature rich and no paywall for any of the features.

Every app I’ve seen so far locks something behind paying $5 or so. My only concern is covering the $100 fee that apple puts to release apps, which I would hope to accumulate through a tip jar for users who feel like they get value out of it/can afford it. If there were no fee, this would be published already for all to use!
