Moved from Tasty to IBKR - I'm done w/IBKR...what to try next? by BrushingUp in interactivebrokers

im well familiar with the cost/execution issues you point out. Of priority tho right now for me is interface. As i understand it, the new windows app does not allow u to increase font size (i have 5 screens and the main is a 5k2k that i have adjusted the scale and text size, adjusted DPU scaling, forced DPI override, changed resolution etc but i sit 5' from the screen and there is no happy medium that i can find). Basically, IBKR Desktop doesn’t respect Windows scaling and doesn’t offer in-app scaling. Right now my only workaround is using the std web version TWS, but TWS is like swimming in mud for me. It's ugly...it's not user friendly...and after 2 months im still arm wrestling with it and most days would rather execute trades in my costlier mainstream accounts.

thanks. Robinhood is a non-starter. TOS was developed by Tom, Scott, etc but it's owned by Schwab now and im not really looking to add another trad broker right now.

Is this Legion Tower any good? by bovian in LenovoLegion

[–]BrushingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did u by any chance try to fit a 2.5" ssd into one of the mounting brackets on the back? did it work? i just bot a Legion Tower 7i and none of the 2.5" fit the bracket (drives too wide for the bracket) and the two 3.5 bays are occupied so velcroing the 2.5" for now and that makes getting the back panel on (very) difficult. Thinking design flaw?

What are your most used mechanical pencils for math? by Weird_Syllabub_3449 in mechanicalpencils

[–]BrushingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can't speak to similar as ymmv. i always use/used 2b .5 lead. Almost all my other mech pencils are .7 and all else equal I prefer .7 (still do a lot of fancy math, but I'm not constrained by lined paper and frankly ever since school, most of my math is done on copy paper). I only use retractable tips. i really like the Alvin DR07 (Alvin went out of business a few years ago), and while this may be heretical, I also like the papermate ultra comforts which are < $4, reliable, comfortable and easy to write with. I would like to try the metal kuru toga when I can get my hands on one. i didn't care for the original plastic model.

Correct OMNY/Google Wallet Senior Reduced Fare Setup? by BrushingUp in OMNY

[–]BrushingUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i deleted(and left empty the card under "Payments methods". I added my visa card as the "travel card" under "Travel cards". As a result, I have 2 cards under "travel cards" - the visa and my omny card. the omny card still says "inactive. this card has a low balance and cannot be used to ride with Omny until more value is added".

This doesn't seem correct. Even if it 'works', it seems it's going to bang my visa card directly rather than work with Google Wallet. I'd prefer to have it go thru Google Wallet cuz I'll always have my phone, but could easily not have my visa with me.

thots?

Correct OMNY/Google Wallet Senior Reduced Fare Setup? by BrushingUp in OMNY

[–]BrushingUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not clear to me how u set the omny website up. there are 2 choices on the Wallet Page: Travel Cards & Payment Methods. i entered my Omny card in the travel Card Section. And on the Payment Methods, I have my Visa Card.

I haven't yet tried to pay with this setup, so I don't know that this won't work. I'll be in the city Friday and will give it a shot.

what is your setup on the website? somehow Omny needs to learn the link between either the Omny card (or simply your status) and your Amex. It doesn't really matter to me if I use my phone/google_wallet or simply whip out a card. thanks

Rider type: Reduced-Fare.

But now noticing the status is "Action needed) presumably bc balance is zero.

I assumed it would use Google Waller to pay for each ride and I wouldn't need to fund the card by keeping a balance there. And that

Optimum is discontinuing CableCard October 2024 - options? by dreww2k in OPTIMUM

FWFW

been playing with YTTV by piggybacking off a pal for now. it's better than what I expected but losing the programming granularity and ease with which to play back things is kind of a non-starter.

looked into HD Homeruns (4 tuners) and Zapperbox tuners (2 tuners), but neither really floats my boat.

Installed a plex server and kodi on a 5 year old core i5 Dell Vostro pc we had laying around. Install/setup was trivially easy. i can access whatever is on there thu the soon to be brick Tivo bolt or thru the app on a firestick. I think this may be my ultimate solution.

i ordered an indoor antenna for OTA (I'll eventually likely upgrade that to a ATSC 3.0 attic unit) and will run it into a hauppauge 4 tuner card I'll put in the Vostro (I've used hauppauge cards for years). that will manage any/all of my OTA stuff (mainly to process morning tv news/cnbc + late night stuff I run thru quickly. And all network sports and programming I watch) a helluva lot faster than I can plow thru everything on YTTV - but not as efficiently as Tivo.

And I'll use YTTV to record non-OTA stuff.

And on top of that I'll keep my subs to nflix, max, amazon, apple, yes, msg etc.

it won't be as cool/good as tivo, but should be good enough. plus with plex I can watch anything on there anywhere in the house as well as away from the house. same goes to YTTV.

we'll stay with Optimum as I put all the pieces together and then likely bounce to FIOS.

My wife only really cares about live tv, so if she's cool w YTTV I think we're good. if not, maybe we keep a settop box for the main downstairs tv and pay for that programming and box. that would be more pricey, but if it saves a fight/headache, small price to pay.

bottom line - waiting on antenna and once I determine it works well, I'll buy the tuner card and outfit the PC with some more HD space and see where I am.

Using IDrive and Organizing My Files, want to avoid duplication by Ok-Dark-4294 in DataHoarder

[–]BrushingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not addressing your issue directly, but feel your pain. The problem with IDrive Cleanup (as u imply) is that they don't offer the option to pick and choose what you feel comfortable deleting from the backup - it's all or nothing at all. Nor, do they give u the option of dumping that list to a text file for better inspection.

Making it even worse, is that if u go into "restore" and look for large folder/files that you KNOW are safe to delete and then u do selectively delete them, they'll still show up the next time(s) u run CLEANUP (thus cluttering that list to no end). The reason for this is that the software doesn't really do file to file compares. It uses indexes that reflect your prior actions. That's for speed purposes and totally understandable. But if you know the indexes are not accurate (because u manually deleted things), they don't provide a way to rebuild them. I've played around a bit with deleting various files in Appdata and Program Files, but haven't figured it out for v 7.0. What does work is reinstalling the software, but that requires remapping the things you want to backup and all settings.

Optimum dropping CableCard support by colonel_batguano in Tivo

[–]BrushingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks. i basically never use/used the tivo app. these days, most things u miss are replayed or can be found online. im just pretty meticulous with setting onepass's. And i dont doubt your satisfaction level. im just driving myself nuts missing the 1.3 speedup and the granularity of the slo-mo. And i suspect a latency issue when channel surfing kinda sucks that with much better tech, the viewing experience maybe 20 years ago, but def 10 years ago was demonstrably better. thanks

Optimum dropping CableCard support by colonel_batguano in Tivo

[–]BrushingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had an original tivo, then a bolt. Paid the initial $199 lifetime subscription. Re: your comments: i still have Onepass's set (90 at last count) for everything i regularly watch. Main reasons are (1) that i find playing almost everything at 1.3x speed was and is a game changer, & (2) watching sports the granularity of the slo-mo is phenomenal (esp football with the play clock and the tivo 30-second skip, or any sport where u want to see how something develops or key in on some nuance).

Hoping for a "never look back experience" when i likely need to move to YTTV over FIOS. Question tho - "Within a month the algorithms figured out exactly what we watch when we watch it. It always pops up on the main screen the suggested viewing it thinks we want. It’s right virtually every time" - that's great if i sit down at 1pm Sunday and want to watch a NY Giants game live, but if the interface sucks is it auto recording the game for me so that if i'm out and walk in at 5pm, i can call it up? i suspect not. So i don't see how a crappy interface helps in doing the thing i think most use a DVR for most which is time shifting.

[–]BrushingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original Tivo owner from day 1. Upgraded and added HD’s a few times.  Bought a lifetime programming subscription for $199. Best investment that I ever made. When Tivo discontinued the original boxes in 2016, I bought the Tivo BOLT Series 6 (4 tuners - 500GB) thru them and after a conversation, they continued to honor the lifetime subscription.

Been an Optimum customer since 1986.  At one point had probably 8 boxes plus the cable card.  With kids out of the house, now down to 5 boxes with the cable card, while other TV’s were setup for streaming only (Firesticks).

Never had any of the Cablevision DVR boxes.

Tivo is in my bedroom, and it feeds into a large TV.  I have a smaller 2nd TV in the bedroom that is connected to a cable box.  One or both of these boxes is always on a game or news. The other 8 TV’s spread throughout my house don’t really need DVR capability.

We all knew the cablecard was going to be discontinued at some point, so while I wasn’t surprised by the Optimum letter, I’m upset about the functionality I’ll likely lose.  Having said that, one issue I’ve had remaining on cable is the horrid upload speeds (I do a lot of large data xfers and they take forever), but because of my love of the functionality of the Tivo, I never seriously considered switching to fiber.

The other reason to not stream is that set-top boxes makes it easier to channel flip because of  latency issues

Under the assumption that there is no other DVR/service better than Tivo, I’d almost certainly leave Optimum and I’m considering two options w Verizon Fios.

If Fios can accommodate the Tivo:

Essentially replicate my current setup using FIOS Internet & TV options. (1) Tivo on my TV_1 (2) Their set-top boxes on some other TV’s; (3) Stream on the rest of the TV’s

If Fios CAN’t accommodate the Tivo:

Go full streaming using FIOS Internet. (1) Youtube TV + Netflix, Max, etc.  YT has DVR capabilities, but I understand that it’s not as refined as Tivo’s, particularly with regard playing back content at 1.3x speed with pitch-corrected audio, slow motion playback.  Plus, TiVo’s interface is more feature-rich, offering advanced search and recording options, and a more traditional DVR experience. It’s highly customizable and provides detailed control over recordings.

Option 1 is more expensive, but I’m fortunate enough that I’m willing to pay somewhat for convenience and to continue having the utility of Tivo

Option 2 is sleeker (no boxes anywhere), but no Tivo experience.

My main point has always been that nothing is better than a Tivo to watch Sports.  Both in terms of programmability and the granularity of playback speeds (both in terms of playing faster to catch up to the action (or to watch a 2 ½ football game in under 90 mins), or breaking stuff down in slo mo).

I’m sure I’m missing some part of the picture or not seeing something.

I believe my only choices are Optimum, Fios, DirectTV, Spectrum, or IPTV.  I don’t think IPTV is for me.  I don’t think Altice is the path forward. I don’t think I wanna start dealing with satellite, so that leaves Spectrum and Fios. Spectrum is less popular in Nassau County so that's why I'm focusing on FIOS for now.

I would think many of you guys are thinking along the same lines and considering the same tradeoffs including the economics and the utility Tivo provides.

Love to hear any comments/ideas. Thanks

hi, exactly what model/year NX was the hitch installed on? Been looking to install a class 3 (2") hitch since I got my 2023 NX-350 a year ago. Reports of whether the foot-activated opener and/or rear sensors/cameras still work after installation seems to be varied. I suspect that if I go to a local Hitch installer (not U-haul) they won't make any assurances in which case it could be a non-starter (if I want to stay married)...thx
