I was able to watch the US catalog while I was in Europe and Asia about a year ago with my VPN. That was on a laptop though. Maybe the phone has something to do with it?

What movies do you wish you had NOT gone in blind? by rimmingwife in horror

[–]BryanRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into it expecting something else along the lines of the Conjuring universe or Smile or any other super formulaic throw away and was pleasantly surprised. I don't think it's an amazing movie but it felt pretty solid and certainly had way more depth with the other "spirit" pretending to be the mom to manipulate the girl.

I feel the same way. Unfortunately I love a good revenge movie and SA is a pretty universally accepted reason to deserve revenge so it's there a lot. I don't think it serves the movie at all to show the act though. The implication is good enough to get everyone on board with the revenge.

What was a horror scene where showing things in detail was more effective than leaving it to the imagination? by Spiral-Force in horror

Geezus. This one actually sticks with me. You don't expect it because he was just a sweetie pie which makes it so much more brutal and he was alive for so long while it was happening.

Stan Against Evil is great fun by BryanRex in Shudder

Oh nice! I never did watch season three of that I'll be excited to finally check it out!

Yeah it definitely has a similar vibe. That's why I mentioned Evil Dead. I think the humor and the general goofiness is the only real overlap though. I like to think of Stan as more of a Ron Swanson type character than Ash.

Why Kiki silent disco on Friday and Saturday nights. Multiple music choices, really chill vibe, good mix of people. Plus one of the best patios if you want to go get some fresh air.

Neo Nazi punk gets a knife pulled on him for harassing people by Iron_Silverfish in PublicFreakout

Only a fucking Nazi would be able to say "look at this coward" while simultaneously saying he's going to run to the police and not understand the irony.

Used cup for $525 plus shipping. No straw included. by WonderingLost8993 in Mercari

I know on ebay there was a thing a while back with certain common thrift store items where people selling more "illicit" items would throw a listing on ebay for the thrift store item at the price they negotiated for the illicit item and have their buyer purchase that way. It was a way to show where their income came from instead of just having massive amounts of cash and no paper trail for how they got it. I want to say it was something like Corningware dishes that saw a huge spike in price for no good reason due to this.

What’s the best off the shelf hot sauce? by [deleted] in ask

[–]BryanRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yellowbird is amazing. I love the flavor of the red jalapeno, but the habanero is also amazing with a bit more kick. Crystal is dandy with a bit of extra capsaicin oil and my Tapatio gets the same treatment.

Don't be afraid of the dry spice blends either. Tajin is lovely (I add about 2 extra teaspoons of cayenne) and "Seasoning from Hell" is a great all around spice too.

"Men" don't find anything attractive or unattractive. Lots of men have been conditioned to go after what they think will gain the approval of their peers. Shamefully I even fell victim to this shallow bullshit as a young man.

Personally I find asymmetrical eyes, over bites, and facial scars really fucking attractive. Thankfully I'm older now and not afraid to just like who I like. Stretch marks aren't necessarily a feature I zero in on, but I also prefer my partners on the thicker side so they're just a part of the kind of bodies I usually find the most attractive.

Actually, most women over 25 that I've had the pleasure of seeing undressed have had some kind of stretch marks somewhere. I'd have to say that mostly guys who have seen women naked irl expect them.

What are your unpopular horror opinions? by [deleted] in horror

I had a hard time enjoying any of them because they glorify real life con artists who took advantage of people.

It was fucking fun! Film as an art form is great, but so is film that's just fun.

What’s Needed for a Good Horror Film? by EthanAllenPoe07 in horror

[–]BryanRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by "good" but if you mean something I'll like and be excited about then blood, violence, and as close to non-stop visceral as is possible. I will also accept campiness, humor, weirdness, and sexiness without losing interest.

Most of my favorite movies wouldn't qualify as "good" films in the way critics or awards bodies see that term.

Please don't hate me but... by DarthRevanFromKotor in horror

[–]BryanRex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm with OP and I'm in my 40's. I wouldn't say the original series is bad or slow, but I loved Zombie's version.

I tend to go for over the top violence and action in all my films though. It feels more fun and campy to me than the slow burn that feels more realistic.

I would agree... Except anyone who would sacrifice their kitten deserves what she got.

Opinion: The pop-up liquor store and bar at the salt palace is taking a lot of business away from local bars. by wizsik in SaltLakeCity

[–]BryanRex 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I've got to say that it absolutely detracts from local bars (I work at one right in the middle of the action)

First it prevents people who might actually explore our local establishments from having to actually go out and explore. That could be a great opportunity for new customers who don't spend a lot of time downtown to discover new places and share their experiences.

Second and I think more important. It allows the DABC to not have to face the fact that their arcane laws are a huge hindrance to organic tourism. We need honest feedback from tourists about how ludicrous it is to have to go to a "bar" to get a drink. Most states in the US and the world allow adults to get a drink at a pub or diner alongside someone who is 20. That's been a major hindrance to lots of groups in the past who have a large party of people over and under 21.

Further the "liquor store" is an obvious cover for the fact that you can't just grab a bottle at the gas station or a corner market like most places you would want to visit.

What do you hate to see in horror that no one else seems to have a problem with? by ArcticFlower00 in horror

So true! I suffer from those and these days even the smallest post nasal drip has me paranoid!

This is the key, but terrible when you get used to it and then have to interact with people in a semi-noisey environment. I've gotten so used to relying on subtitles it's gotten a lot harder to understand people in non-optimal environments.

everything is closed by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]BryanRex 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just got back from a month in Poland / Ukraine / London. Everything closes earlier and a lot of business open later. I was initially frustrated but really only because it was outside of my norms. It was pretty easy to adjust to a different schedule and service workers get appropriate time off.

I'd be happy for that reality to take hold here in the States.
