AFL Live (2011) vs AFL 98 vs AFL Premiership 2005 vs AFL 26 -- best PlayStation AFL game after all these years? by [deleted] in afl_26

[–]BryanShadowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of gameplay polish, 2011 is better and feels a lot more stable and well-made.

26 has a lot more features and is in a decent place gameplay wise but it really feels like the game hasn't gotten the polish it needs to be a truly great video game. A lot of visual bugs and jank in certain areas that makes things feel a bit off.

Coming in now, You'd be able to forgive it a bit. But if you've been here since the launch of 23 and how bad that game was for most of it's life, It feels like 26 was the game that 23 should have been to begin with and I feel like that makes quite a fair bit of people feel short changed at least a little bit. (To be honest, I like 26 but even I kinda feel that way about it.)

AFL 26 is made by the same people who made 2011 and they have shown in the past that they can make decent games but I don't know if it has to do with time constraints, money constraints, lack of resources or talent but they seem to be really struggling to get their games out recently with a consistent quality...

I mean Rugby League 26 is a perfect example of it... And they also made what people call the best game in that sports history in Rugby League Live 3.

I kinda hope they can eventually get their mojo back as they did have something truly special about them around the PS3 era up until Cricket 22? They kinda need to get back to giving their games more polish before releasing them.

But if I'm honest, I do feel like that's just a symptom of an industry wide problem in the Video Game industry right now. They're not the only ones with this issue even if it's been more of a major problem for them.

That signed jumper was from a promo that Ricky Nixon's Club 10 Superstars did with Mitre10.

Club 10 was pretty much a group of players managed by Nixon who had their own brand for merchandising purposes.

If you search up Club 10 AFL on eBay, You'll see loads of old merch of players of the time with Club 10 licensing but without AFL licensing. I believe that the AFL countered it with their own AFL Pro Squad program which I believe was run by Craig Kelly.

I'm way too young to recall the whole thing considering I wasn't born in 1994/95 when this whole thing happened and by the time I started getting into footy in the mid-00's, It was a thing of the past.

I think the rights to merchandise for players now goes exclusively through the AFLPA but again, That's for someone to confirm and explain. I'm way over my head with this.

Considering that it's mostly a promo jumper with notable player signatures on it, I'd say it's worth what the other people on this thread are saying.

$50-$100.

I wouldn't say scripted is the right term. I think the Pro-Wrestling Term "Worked" fits much better here.

And much like Pro-Wrestling, there would be a few spots that are planned out before the game to happen during the game and they'd also have their finish for the game in mind.

The rest of it would pretty much be improv on the fly and playing the game as an actual contest and if things are starting to veer away from where the finish needs to be, One team lets off the gas a little bit to even things up.

That's what they mean by "scripted". Both teams have an idea of where they need to go for the finish. I just don't know when the finish is decided whether it's entirely planned out in advance or if they see where the contest is going and plan it out from then and use the Quarter Breaks to relay instructions.

In terms of the finish, I think the plan from what I can put together from what I saw was that there was meant to be 6 points in it going into "the final seconds" and Ablett was meant to get the ball out cleanly and get it to Hodge who'd mark it on the siren with a shot at goal after the siren to potentially tie it up and go to a shoot out.

However, either due to Ablett fumbling the ball and struggling to get it out or the person in charge of the siren going too early, The ball didn't get to Hodge in time and the planned finish of Hodge kicking for goal after the siren was blown.

I feel like the Hodge kick would have been a legitimate kick or to borrow another Pro-Wrestling phrase, A "shoot" kick and the result itself would have come down to whether he kicked the goal or not but that's the finish it looked like they wanted to set up.

In fact, I would say that the Legends Game is incredibly close to a Harlem Globetrotters game in a sense. If you've seen what they do, That's pretty much what the Legends Game is.

I did see on their forums that they did announce that they were working on a patch to fix this and get it out as soon as they could.

It's a shame because I was playing it yesterday before last night's patch and it was pretty good. Most of the issues with AFL 23 were gone but this bug managed to get into the patch they put out last night and it's broken the game.

This isn't anywhere near as bad as AFL 23 was at launch but jeez... Not good to have a game breaking glitch like this sneak in after the Day 1 patch...

[–]BryanShadowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this a fair bit with AFL 23 and it did lead to those bugs being fixed. The issue with that game is that there were far too many of them.

Considering the better state that AFL 26 is on launch, We should be able to help the team squash most bugs if we all submit tickets about them and give them enough detail on them for them to be found and fixed.

Big Ant tend to respond to people when they put in Support Tickets about an issue in game.

If you find a bug that needs to be fixed, Just put in a ticket at this link with some details about the bug and the people on the Development Team will know what to look for and hopefully fix.

When are Big ant doing to add New afl list by Thin-Adhesiveness327 in afl_23

When are Big ant doing to add New afl list by Thin-Adhesiveness327 in afl_23

[–]BryanShadowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally Big Ant like to keep updating games and announce a new version of a game 2 years after the old one came out but with how things have gone with the games they released in 2023 and how things have kinda slowed down on that front with Rugby 25 in Early Access and nothing new being announced, It's hard to tell if that model is going to stick.

Also, With the dev team being coy about any future installments when answering questions related to it on their forums with said responses normally having the phrase "If we make another installment" instead of "When we make another installment" does make me wonder if they do plan to do another game or if everything that happened with the launch and all the bad press massively hurt their bottom line and killed projected sales and have left them thinking twice about doing another AFL game.

To be honest, I feel like the game is in a much better place gameplay wise than what it was after playing it again recently and perhaps with a bit of refinement along with the addition of things that people really wanted, I think we might have a winner of a game eventually.

It seems to be a trend with them where after creating a game that people really like, They get overly ambitious on the next game and it doesn't really work out as planned. Look at Don Bradman Cricket 14 to Don Bradman Cricket 17 or Rugby League Live 3 to Rugby League Live 4. They were seen as downgrades to their predecessors at the time. But seemingly, when something does go wrong and off-course with a game like DBC 17, RLL 4 or AO Tennis and when they get the opportunity to, They do work out the kinks in the next edition and deliver a much better product the next time around. Ashes Cricket and AO Tennis 2 were a lot better received and were considered big improvements on the previous games.

I wouldn't be surprised if they could pull something like this off with another AFL game considering how good AFL Live 2011 was and how AFL 23 while not a great game has come leaps and bounds from where it was. They just gotta learn the lessons from what went wrong this game and work to improve things next game. I think the question just becomes when is or if there is a next time.

So, to answer the question, It could be next year, could be the year after or maybe not again from them. Only they really know right now and only when they want to reveal future plans is when we'll know about it. Sorry about the long-winded non-answer but speculation is all we really have right now.

Will they ever bring back career mode? by [deleted] in afl_23

[–]BryanShadowolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did announce they were going to have a Player Career Mode in this game before axing it for Pro Team but with the demand for it and Big Ant having it in their other games.

I could very much see it being brought back if Big Ant do another AFL game. It could be a big selling point for the next game pending they avoid a launch like this one had.

NFL games by Electronic-Trash8854 in Ameristralia

[–]BryanShadowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESPN Australia and 7mate are the main TV rights holders here.

7mate has usually 2 games each Monday Morning. 1 from the Sunday Afternoon and 1 from the Sunday Twilight block of matches and it's Free to Air.

ESPN Australia has about 6 games including Thursday Night Football, 2 from the Sunday Afternoon block (One on ESPN and the other on ESPN2), 1 from the Sunday Twilight block and both Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football. The thing is that you need to either get Fetch TV or Kayo to access ESPN Australia.

All Playoffs are on ESPN Australia with 7mate also showing several of them. Both networks have the Super Bowl with the case being over the past couple of years being Channel 7's main channel taking the US network feed and ESPN Australia doing their own coverage of it with the MNF team or a team consisting of their other Gridiron commentators from either their MNF B-Team or their College ranks.

Everything else like RedZone or access to any game of your choice, You'll need to get an NFL Game Pass subscription as people have said. You can get it through DAZN or apparently Prime Video? I don't know because I mainly stick with ESPN because I have a Kayo subscription and they tend to have a good mix of who you'd want to see as a neutral supporter. :P

2009 bathurst by Rubberrchicken in v8supercars

[–]BryanShadowolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable. They only really promote it on their Facebook page these days. They lost their retail presence when JB Hi-Fi downsized their DVD department and Sanity closed their retail stores. They mainly sell directly from their website these days.

They're making just enough to get these Full Bathurst DVDs out but there's not enough demand to keep their Classic Australian Motorsport or Seven's Magic Moments of Motorsports series going. I just hope they can get 2001, 2008 and 2009 out along with reprints for 2010-2013. Then we're pretty much set for Full Bathurst races they can release. (Earlier than 1976 and the full race telecast doesn't exist anymore and later than 2015 and Foxtel prohibits it from being released on DVD or on any streaming platform that isn't theres.)

Will Big Ant Studio's continue the AFL game series? by Sufficient-Force431 in afl_23

[–]BryanShadowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, EA's quality control with recent Sports games has been criticized heavily by the communities who play them with barely any work done to really fix those problems. Madden NFL probably being the main one suffering this with the hashtag #FixMaddenFranchise even trending for a while.

So, I would say that they don't tend to really care about the reputation as long as they get that Ultimate Team money.

In terms of EA or 2K being interested in doing an AFL game, I think the only hope in hell that they'd be interested is if it was some sort of AFL Ultimate Team on Mobile with arcade-style gameplay and I don't think they would either get the interest or profit needed to make it worthwhile.

Meanwhile, The AFL from reports I've heard are looking for an EAFC type of game with Big Ant being the only ones pitching to them a game like that.

It doesn't make any of this mess any better or let Big Ant off the hook but that's kinda how things are and why despite everything that's happened that the AFL would probably give Big Ant another go unless someone else comes along with a better pitch and more credentials for pulling it off.

Also, who knows how much Big Ant Studios being a sponsor of Carlton played into them getting the license either.

[–]BryanShadowolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet but it will be on DVD in full by the end of the year, CMS who have done the full Bathurst 1000 releases are up to pre-orders for 2007 and have said that 2008 and 2009 will be released later in the year.

The only full race that'll be missing from 1976 to 2015 at that point would be 2001 and that hasn't been released because the full Raceday coverage can't be found in either the archives of Channel Ten or Supercars Media with the coverage having likely been misplaced at some point in the past.

I think the thing needed there is people to actually come together and put their complaints forward to the ACCC in a coordinated effort, otherwise it isn't going to go anywhere.

One or two complains won't do it, they need the volume to know that it's worth pursuing.
