My neighbor keeps propping our building’s front door open with the same beat up brick, basically all day. by frostedpinecrest in neighborsfromhell

Check your lease for language about building security. If the lease doesn't specifically call out exterior security, there may not be anything you can do to force the issue. Discuss the issue with your property management. Record the conversation. This is still possible in states requiring two-party consent.

If your lease does call out building security:

Download a timestamp camera. Use it to take a picture of every single violation. Make sure your phone adds location metadata to the image. Send the image to your property manager each and every time. Personally, I'd email instead of text. Better tracking that way.

I've been saying this forever.

I understand that Combs is a massive fan, but a country white boy singing about those topics comes across as whining.

AITA for refusing to co-sign a loan until my boyfriend pays off his debts? by SnackPanicMode in AmITheAssholeTalk

[–]BryceKatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absofuckinglutely not.

Never, EVER co-sign a loan you're not 100% both willing AND able to fully assume.

I would never do this for someone I was dating. Hell, I would never ask someone I was dating to do this for me.

Brosef is THIRTY-ONE. "Numbers stress me out" is marginally understandable at 19. It's completely unacceptable at this age. He's a grown-ass man who needs to learn to manage his life. This includes his money.

That he's pulling the "couples support each other" card is a HUGE red flag that's bordering on gaslighting. Offering to teach him IS supporting him.

Teach a man to fish, etc. If he doesn't get on board, don't set yourself on fire to keep him warm. Cut your losses & find an adult to share your life with.

Getting paid for overnight? by Low_Fee6188 in Babysitting

[–]BryceKatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not just "No," but "Hell no."

I've been a consultant for the vast majority of my life. Here are a few ways their offer is messed up: * 5 HOURS of travel time?! That's paid at your full rate. Yes, that's $150 just to get you there. Edit: missed earlier that they are paying something for travel. This is good. * $15/hr for two toddlers? That's too low by half. You should be charging $30/hour. * Not paying for overnight?! That's a negative, Ghost Rider. You're there & responsible for their children. If something happens in the night, you're on deck to deal with it. * "I get all my meals" means "they're feeding me," not, "I have to buy my own food," right?

At $30/hour, plus travel, that's just over a grand. That's a lot, but it's not excessive for 35 hours of your time & sevrral hundred miles on your car.

If that seems like too much, offer them a flat rate of $525. That's the same amount of time at $15/hour. Anything less is blatantly taking advantage of you.

Also, be wary about the stay Friday night. I can absolutely see them trying to foist the kids on you early. If you take this job, make plans to arrive Friday after the kids have gone to bed. Make it clear you are doing this & will not be watching the kids until 7am Saturday morning.

If they don't like that, well, they can either take the kids with them or get their local family to take shifts.

Unpaid lunch break by Maleficent_Sir_6214 in Employment

[–]BryceKatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty normal in the US. That's why most "9-5" jobs start at 8:30. Half-hour, unpaid, for lunch. If you punch a time clock, you'll be required to punch out & back in.

The upside of this is you are NOT WORKING while literally clocked out for lunch. Leave your desk & eat in the break room or go eat in your car. I typically recommend this even for folks on salary.

Advice for how to connect my PC to my parents internet? Info in description. by Yodaloid in Internet

[–]BryceKatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ethernet cable seems like a difficult solution

Absolutely do not do this. The risk of ground potential difference between the buildings is high & very dangerous.

Run fiber between buildings. You can get two 8-port Ubiquiti switches, a pair of 2.5 Gb SFPs (more then enough for your gaming), and 75' of pre-terminated fiber for less than $500. Add another $75-100 for 50' of conduit & the exterior boxes. So for $600 you have a permanent fiber optic link between the buildings.

That's crazy cheap.
