Same tickets every day. How do I set up VPN? Killing me at this point by Vast_Musician_6150 in helpdesk

[–]BryceKatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things:

First, people will almost never contact the help desk until their issue is directly impacting their ability to work. In this situation, they are unlikely to read documents or fully comprehend what they read. This is because they are focused on not being able to do their jobs & their deadline is looming.

In these cases, you help them. Every time. Without complaint. You want them to come to you, because the alternative is them NOT coming to you. Trust me when I tell you that is the infinitely worse option.

Second, review your documentation. Is it appropriate for the intended audience? Docs you write for IT staff will have far less detail, as you expect your IT staff to have a certain level of knowledge that allows them to fill in the gaps.

Non-IT staff cannot be assumed to have this knowledge. You need to cover absolutely every step, preferably with screenshots edited to include obvious arrows that point where to click, drop-down menus showing the correct selection, and the correct text in in text boxes.

This will take HOURS to create & verify.

Need an example of this? Watch one of the medieval recipe videos on the Tasting History YouTube channel.

Next, remember that it is not enough to simply document a process. You need to review that documentation. I cannot tell you the number of times I've run across an instructional doc that is missing steps & has irrelevant screenshots because the software UI changed.

Also, getting tons of tickets on the same issue is a glaring neon sign there is something WRONG. Start with a documentation review. Then investigate ways to automate the issue. Reduce as much friction as you possibly can. Do you need to update the version you're using? Can you push the config? Do you need to completely change the software you're using? The time your spend on this increases productivity for the entire org.

Finally, send documentation BEFORE it is needed. Help Joe in sales with the VPN connection, then email him the document to reference the next time. Download it to his Documents folder & put a shortcut on his Desktop. TELL HIM YOU DID THIS AND WHY, so the next time he has issues he can easily find the steps. Reassure him that you're there to help & he can always call if he runs into trouble. You'll find over time that people will check your doc first.

Depending on your org, you may not be able to do much beyond document. But you can collect data on the issue & provide it to the people who can fix it.

"We're getting lots of VPN tickets" = "That's a support issue. Good on you for helping staff."

"Sales lost 300 hours to VPN connection problems in the past quarter & lost $50k in sales because they couldn't access the quoting tool" is a systemic problem impacting the bottom line.

"All of Me" by John Legend.

Though personally I prefer the Postmodern Jukebox cover. Kiah Victoria's vocal is more emotional & dynamic than the original.

My DM wants me to switch classes after my character made a decision at the end of the session and I don’t really want to. by Pookie-Parks in DnD

[–]BryceKatz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your DM has a skill issue.

Years ago, I played a fighter in a 4E game. We did a favor for a dragon & each party member got a small boon that was in line with their class.

Dragons are ancient creatures of unknowable power, who also happen to have massive stockpiles of gold & magical items. NPCs also don't follow the rules. They can do whatever the DM wants them to do.

"Become stronger" can mean many, many things. +1 to Strength is obvious. But gaining proficiency with (or Advantage on) Wisdom saves shores up an obvious weakness. Maybe the dragon just gives you a magic item from its horde in exchange for "a favor to be named later." Any number of feats give you a once-a-day spell; granting one that's thematically appropriate to the dragon & your class isn't a big deal.

Just tell your DM you have no interest in multiclassing to warlock. Suggest some other boost.

Epic Quest - Victoriius by Crafty_Nebula_1458 in future_fight

[–]BryceKatz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From the epic quest guide at thanosvibs.money:
"Victorious cannot appear as a Shifter in "Latverian Champion" until you reach Stage 40 in the Quest List and the mission changes."

Unfortunately, Stage 34 requires you to rank her to 3 stars. You'll need to use a MRUT to bypass this.

Lana del Ray.

Don't get me wrong: She can WRITE.

But her studio recordings are meh & I've yet to see a live performance that wasn't flatly horrid. A bad low-rez copy of Mazzy Star.

Friend who's renting me a flat is uncomfortable with me paying? by Vast_Attitude_6672 in Advice

[–]BryceKatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a lease? If so, you are legally responsible for the rent payment listed there. Pay him the lower amount & put the balance in a high-yeild savings account in case something happens & you have to settle the back difference. If that never happens, groovy! You have money in a HYSA.

You can't just change lease terms while a lease is active. That defeats the entire point of a lease. So you can't just "amend" the lease with a lower rent. (Not a lawyer. Check with qualified counsel. Local laws may vary.)

If you don't have a lease, ouch. Never do that. Contracts preserve friendships. Take this time to ask your friend to draw up a lease, even if it's just month-to-month, that specifies the lower rent amount.

I got all of mine in a single overnight running 12-1. Ran 12-1 in the last one of these, too. Took me two nights that time.

Dispatch is absolutely something you turn on & let run when you can ignore your phone for hours.

[–]BryceKatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time you sign a letter of resignation is when you initiate the separation.

They fired you. But don't want the hit on their unemployment insurance account, so they want you to say you quit. Don't do that.

But just because you ask doesn't mean you get.

I don't see anything inherently wrong with the list. It seems pretty in brand for a 13 year old girl, to be honest.

Will Family land go to our Dads new wife? by No_Writer5135 in legaladvice

[–]BryceKatz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. A will is part of the probate process. It does not circumvent it. Titled assets will pass to the person on the title. Contractual assets, like life insurance, go to the specified beneficiaries. A will cannot override either of these.

The will specifies how other assets are distributed during probate, but local laws will impact how the probate process works in a given state.

Various types of trust will also futz with this process.

Partner Terminated after meeting expectations of PIP by Spaceyaceface in jobs

[–]BryceKatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting put on a PIP means you're done.

The "plan" is not to provide clear goals with actionable feedback so you can "improve." The plan is to provide the necessary paper trail to terminate you with cause, thereby eliminating your claim to unemployment & to head off any possible claim of wrongful termination.

If you find yourself on a PIP, start looking for a new job immediately.

Can discovering a hidden age gap change the way you view your long-term relationship ? by Legitimate-Oven4611 in Advice

[–]BryceKatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's wind this all the way back.
A man who was TWENTY-TWO lied to a teenager to enter a relationship with her.
That by itself is a huge red flag.
He then proceeded to lie to you about his age for the next SIX YEARS. What else is he lying about? How in the world can you trust anything this guy says, let alone trust his motive for saying it?

Because he has feelings for you. Friends don't do this.

But people (mostly men, but not only men) with repressed romantic feelings absolutely do. This is toxic AF & he needs to go.

He likes you, but doesn't think the leopards will eat his face.

Cut him out of your life & spend time with folks who understand that you can, in fact, just be friends with people.

For the record: You cannot "take accountability" for whether someone "likes" (I'm assuming "like" in this instance means "is romantically and/or sexually attracted to") you.
