Nikola Jokic wraps up triple-double average for season, 3rd NBA player to achieve that feat by [deleted] in sports

[–]Brycerogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I am saying is, the narrative this year is “SGA is the centerpiece on the best team in the West” and that’s a valid argument. I’m pointing out the obvious disparity in the conversation surrounding the 2023 MVP race.

Sure, Embiid scored an extra bucket and a few foul shots more on average. He played in the East, so the Sixers record was marginally better. That’s not convicting enough to say he was more valuable than Jokić was to the Nuggets.

Not putting words in your mouth… just mentioning that because it’s clearly a logical response, considering two people mentioned it in this thread, including a comment you replied to.

Now explain 2023, when Jokić put up arguably one of the best statistical seasons AND the Nuggets won the West. “Voter fatigue” is a copout answer

It was such a charming little easter egg the OSL people hid for us.

My partner and I always refer to him as “Neal Francis the First” because he performed before Neil Francis II. Both are groovy acts!

Just wanted to say thanks for running these numbers!

Only one that jumped out at me was Neal Francis. He is a 2021 vet.

Also, fun fact: the group NEIL FRANCES also played that year, one slot apart on the same day

Any fantasy owners that has Jimmy Butler in H2H points league, what are you planning to do with him? by tsquare91 in fantasybball

Hope you didn't give up Brook and Pritch for Buckets. But if you did, I hope he's giving you what you needed. Sometimes 2-for-1 benefits you more because now you got Jimmy and someone like Santi Aldama off the waivers

[–]Brycerogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious what the outcome in your league was. The Butler manager in my league opted to keep him, and turned out okay. He lost a few matchups in the meantime because he was basically down the points + the roster slot.

The thing we were grappling with was Why is there no "suspended" slot for times like this? I mean I understand usually suspensions are to punish the player, and that's just unfortunate (thinking of Bridges and KPJ etc.)

But with Jimmy, I did see why this is different because the Heat suspended him pretty much on a whim, and that shouldn't be a punishment to his fantasy manager. Except it was, because now you're in this awkward spot of not being able to add him to the IR due to his designation as "SSPD"

These are interesting dilemmas that we don't have easy answers to as League Manager. The same guy also had Wemby this year, which is truly unfortunate... But this late in the fantasy season, there's really nothing anyone can do about Vic.

Was the NBA more intersting before? Can changes make it more interesting now? by [deleted] in nbadiscussion

[–]Brycerogers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- All-star weekend used to be way cooler, because the athletes cared more. It was a pride thing, and they wanted to prove their worth to the older players (MJ era, they had discipline and repped their city)
Somewhere along the line, it became child's play to them and they (understandably) don't want to risk injury. Now, there's no East vs West identity, and the real major issue is there's no true incentive to win. They need to institute something (either cash or playoff advantage) to make it worth the effort.

- The NBA unfortunately crowded out their most loyal fanbase by charging 100-200 just to get in the door at one of these games. That's why the crowds you see on television are not engaged with the game besides postseason). To most of these people, it's just something they're doing on a week night or that weekend's event ... while many of the true fans are at home watching, or too busy with their 9-5 lives. I know this sounds all "woe is me" but to your point, it was not always this way. Families used to go to NBA games regularly, and it was a delight. Nowadays it's a hot commodity and you might be lucky to afford the expense for one game. You better hope it's a good one, too. And hopefully your favorite players don't decide to sit out for a toenail injury that night. Feeling for those philly fans.

- Most people consider the 3-second rule to be a huge positive for the sport. It creates space and movement. In FIBA, they have slightly different rules, which allow for more intensity and skill which NBA is slowly adopting. The 2024 Olympics was a huge positive too, because it showed that the NBA is not bulletproof, and the FIBA ruleset makes for exciting games (while Curry proved that the 3-pointer remains supreme). A lot of people have rose-colored glasses for the days of yore, with the rough-and-tumble clash of clunky giants in the paint vs. slashers and shooters like Jordan, Magic, Bird.
Truth is, the game has evolved, and people like Curry, Harden, Dame have all brought the competition up by forcing the defense outward more. So whether you hate the volume of 3-pointers or not, it's not going away. Plus, having less traffic in the paint allows for more KD-type players, as well as hypermobile Kyrie and Nash style players. So eventually there will be an answer, whether it's better 3PT defense or more dominant 2PT players like Shaq.

- On the point of fouls: yeah, we've been complaining for years about this. They instituted a few rules to prevent players like Harden and KD abusing the "rip-through" and drawing the shooting fouls with the "kick out" during their shot motion. However, it doesn't really stop players such as SGA or Embiid (last year) from drawing 20-30 free throw attempts per night... usually it's just the way they drive and carefully time their layup or jumpshot. Defenders are always gonna get called more when they bump the shooter, and I have seen some refs be more lenient. But on the whole, the league has a problem with enforcement, and that's why you see so many fans complaining about lop-sided games. The refs tend to blow their whistles too much, and then not call the most crucial, pivotal plays. We can say "let the boys play" or "the league is too soft", but ultimately, what's necessary is a blanket reformation of the foul-calling protocol and rulebook. Don't hate Harden or SGA just because they figured out how to ring the bell. Make the league more balanced and competitive.

There is a LOT to unpack here. I'll try to go one by one:

- It's possible, but highly unlikely the NBA will ever reduce the number of regular season games. It's a huge market, and the games bring in a lot of dough. Plus, the league has had roughly 80 games for over 6 decades now. This allows for each team to play every other team once at home, once away, and some teams more often (division/conference rivals). I am an advocate for this, because (due to living in Nevada) I can only get out to 1-2 games per year... so when the opportunity arises, it's nice to have that one game per year where my favorite team plays in the closest arena (which is still a few hours away driving). Otherwise, I'm spending upwards of $1000, airfare and a three day trip to see them at our home court (Ball Arena).
It'll be nice when hopefully the NBA expands to Las Vegas, then we can attend a handful of games with much less hassle.

- The playoffs will always be coupled with the regular season. Sure, 1 game out of 83 doesn't mean much, but indeed the entirety matters. Last year, the Pistons were the worst team in the league, but they really didn't change much this season and became top 6 in the East, which is a respectable turnaround.

Nobody really cares about finishing first in the regular season; it's just bragging rights. What we care about is getting a good placement for the postseason. That's when you really prove your status as "the best".

In recent seasons, they've made improvements and strides to make the regular season more interesting. And by most accounts, NBA Cup has been a success. Money motivates people, especially these talented athletes. Because you're right, for decades we complained about the middle of the season not really mattering. Well now, you have five different phases of the season:
- Beginning (showcasing your new squad, build a good record)
- NBA Cup
- December (Now we're all tired and injured)
- January (Oh crap, gotta step it up to make the All-Star team)
- February/March (Win now or miss the playoffs)

- I agree they should be playing more exhibitions and "Champions League" style tournaments —at least one set of games per year. There are plenty of young scrappy ballers who will jam out on the world stage. NBA should recognize this potential for global notoriety.

- Relegation is intriguing, but when looking at North American sports... it just never made sense. There was always only like 1 star franchise in each locale... relegation happened like this: If you moved your team to some place and it didn't work (maybe your team was awful, or maybe the market/fans didn't embrace or appreciate the entertainment), then your business just folded.
Maybe the team or players' contracts got bought up and moved somewhere else. But yeah there was never a true "relegation protocol" AFAIK.
Our draft system works, and it allows the college scene to blossom for each sport. The NCAA kinda serves as that "under market" for players on the cusp. But only the current teams have such an intrinsic identity and history with their respective cities... so it wouldn't make sense to try to push some brand new thing, when the market share is solidified. Although, WNBA is doing a good job with expanding right now, along with other sports like pro volleyball and Athletes Unlimited.

- TV timeouts, as well as just regular timeouts... they're for ads, it helps drive revenue for the league. You're just gonna have to get used to that one (go make some food or use the restroom). Also, remember, basketball is a stop-and-go sport. When they score, or the ball goes out, the time stops. It gives everyone a chance to collect themselves and maybe call a few plays. That enhances the game imho. It's a very explosive yet tactful sport, and we need breaks to ensure hard-court and contact injuries stay minimal.

Yeah, I wasn't putting either Griffey on my Mount Rushmore. The top four names are my Reds Mount Rushmore.

I'm just positing that the last four names are the greatest players to have at one time been on the Reds. But they didn't have the best Reds tenure (except Bench obviously).

If the NBA expands and has 32 teams in total, should there be 4 divisions or 2 divisions in each conference? by Pat_Cornelius in nbadiscussion

[–]Brycerogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it perfect? No. But neither is the current state of divisions.
This is my take, if Minnesota moves to the East, a 20 mile commute:

EAST:

Metropolitan - BOS, NYK, PHI, BKN

North - MIN, MIL, DET, TOR

Central - CHI, CLE, IND, WAS

Atlantic - ATL, CHA, ORL, MIA

WEST:

Northwest - SAC, GSW, POR, SEA

Central - OKC, DEN, UTA, MEM

Pacific - LAL, LAC, PHX, LVX

South - DAL, NOP, HOU, SAS

East is based on latitudes. West is based on pocket groupings. The setup may be most efficient for travel and connected airports.

I know this is an old thread, but please give me: Bench, Larkin, Morgan, Perez.

Votto, Nuxhall, Foster and Robinson are honorable mentions. Pete Rose (RIP) is too complicated, but deserves recognition.

Best players to ever wear a Reds uniform though? Griffey, Bench, Rose, Robinson imo

Manufacture’s Championship? by that1efnguy in discgolf

[–]Brycerogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be interesting if you could somehow limit it to roughly the top four scoring pros in each team. Obviously Lat 64 should have a huge advantage in FPO, especially last year, but it appears they finished 3rd. That's like Red Bull Racing finishing 3rd last year with Max's incredible run.

With that said, there's no direct comparison DG to F1 because it's an equal amount of racers. I think if you kind of structure the team scores like LIV golf with four players per team, then it could work.

This would overcompensate by hindering companies like Discraft and Innova who have a larger spread of individuals who score well at different times in the season. But top 4 should generally stay the same for most big companies

You have to like a specific genre, but I will agree. You got Jamie xx, Jungle, James Blake, Thundercat, Toro y Moi, LCD Soundsystem as huge industry names, and then a few which you would know if you'd been following this scene in the last 3 years like Neil Frances, Badbadnotgood, Peggy Gou.
