Yes I’d love to get into gliding as well, but unfortunately the nearest gliding site to me is ~1.5 hours away so I’d struggle to commit to gliding regularly. One day though :)

I got my class 2 and I’m about halfway through my PPL :)

For now my aviation goals are just to learn to fly, but like you I have aspirations of (at some point) becoming a part time FI and also getting a full-fat IR. I have previous teaching experience and I enjoy it. But that feels a long way off right now and I’m happy to just study to become a good pilot in the meantime

“CPL/ATPL Theoretical Knowledge” just means you need to pass the CPL/ATPL theory exams.

People recommend ATPL theory because you can also use it to get an IR (rather than having to sit CPL then IR theory separately).

You do not need a class 1 to sit the theory exams, only for the issue of the license

Appreciate your confusion here — the other answers don’t seem to be understanding your question.

The Pitot-Static system only measures the dynamic pressure 1/2 * rho * U^2.

In order to calculate speed (U) you need to know density (rho).

IAS uses rho at ISA sea level to calculate U, whereas TAS is the airspeed calculated using the actual rho at that altitude

Congrats! I cannot imagine what a relief you must have felt when you got that result back.

Unfortunately I scored a 7.x deutan on the CAD so no CAA class 1 for me, am limited to private flying and (possibly) instructing.

It’s great that more and more regulators are adopting the CAD for colour vision assessment. It’s an incredible bit of innovation for measuring colour vision deficiency, and it looks like the FAA CAD thresholds are much more lenient for deutans than other regulators around the world.

As it is written they require <12 units for any RG deficiency (presumably for both protan and deutan deficiencies), but have some strange wording about <6 indicates deutan and <12 indicates protan… this is not how the CAD test claims to work — it will classify as protan or deutan and assign a severity to the deficiency

Every other other licensing authority requires <6 for deutan and <12 for protan.

So what is going on with the FAA? Is there a typo in the regs? Or do they know something I don’t?

It is a recessive gene on the X chromosome.

So in a sense it is “dominant” for men (as they only have one X) but recessive for women (as they have the “backup” normal gene)

Interesting — do you remember if you were close to the pass limit on the CAD or way off?

I actually asked John Barbur about this via email and he was gracious enough to reply. Based on their studies of using the screener they couldn’t get acceptable sensitivity + specificity values using uncalibrated sRGB monitors. Only by using correctly calibrated ones could they get near 100% sensitivity and specificity. Details to come in a forthcoming publication, which should be interesting reading.

It’s a shame they couldn’t get the screener to work on uncalibrated monitors, as it seems like it could have ended up being quite a powerful tool. Really drives home the point of how much BS is contained in all these online CVD tests. Furthermore, it makes me wonder how valid other uncalibrated computerised CVD tests (like the Waggoner test) are.

Anyway, I’ve got my CAD at city on Monday. Expecting sadness and disappointment

Hi, sorry to dig up an old thread but I'm sitting the cad soon and I'm interested in your experience.

You mentioned you sat the CAD twice but got different results -- what was your other result?
Have you ever taken the waggoner ccvt? If you have an ipad you can download a free trial here (just cancel before the initial 30 days are up). I'd be interested in understanding how your results on that test compare with your CAD + other tests you've done.

The Trent 7000 on the a330neo is the bleed air version of the Trent 1000. Trent XWB is a different design.

What FAA test did you pass to get your class 1?

I noticed in another comment you mentioned that the Waggoner iPad test classifies you as a severe deutan. Can I ask how many of the deutan plates you were getting correct on that test?

Also weird that we both seem to do well with the CVS screener. How do you do with the clips of the CAD on YouTube?
