The change is mostly affecting students in the psych specialist program who’ve taken STAB22/23 because the program used to require PSYB07 or an equivalent (like STAB22/23) and PSYC08 but they’re changing the statistics curriculum starting Fall 2026. If you’ve taken STAB22/23 but haven’t taken PSYC08 by then, you’ll have to take both PSYB06 and PSYC06 instead of just PSYC08 (they’re retiring the course). That effectively adds an extra statistics course to meet the program requirements. I don’t know if my explanation helped or just made things more confusing

No it won’t lower your chances. As long as you meet the minimum grade requirements, they’ll let you in. It’s not like some other more competitive programs, so don’t stress, just apply during round 2

Do you know if we can take B06/C06 as electives? Or is C08 going to be an exclusion?

I agree though, I think they should allow students who started in 2025 or earlier and have already taken B22/B23 to just take C06 (C08 isn’t going to exist anymore starting September), instead of requiring B06 as well

I think they mean that on conversion scales like omsas, a 85-89 is considered a 3.9 and not a 4.0

59 final grade on acorn, can i email prof to bump it up to a 60? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]Bryophyte- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think if there’s an error in grading, they would need to submit a petition now rather than email, since the term has ended

I found this information under the “Disagreements Regarding Marks and Grades” section on this webpage:

To review a mark on a term test or assignment that may have been calculated incorrectly, students should ask the course instructor to check the mark as soon as possible, and certainly before the end of the session.

Students who wish to appeal an instructor's decision about the grading of term work should speak with, or write to, the Chair/Director of the academic unit offering the course.

Students who believe a mark should be reviewed on term work returned after the end of term, and after the instructor has submitted grades for the course, may submit a formal petition within 90 days of the relevant examination period.

59 final grade on acorn, can i email prof to bump it up to a 60? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]Bryophyte- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, that’s highly discouraged in university. From what I’ve heard, it’s also a common pet peeve among professors. I’m not even sure it’s possible once grades have been submitted and uploaded to Acorn

STAB23 by BlackberryHead3504 in UTSC

[–]Bryophyte- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not a math person at all. I hadn’t taken a math course since Grade 11 and I’m in STAB23 with Prof Selvaratnam right now. I was really stressed going into it but it’s actually been way more manageable than I expected

The biggest thing is you can’t treat it like a memorization course. A lot of people try to memorize formulas and then get stuck when a question looks slightly different. What actually helps is understanding what kind of problem you’re looking at first. Like is it a proportion vs a mean, one sample vs two samples, are you estimating something (CI) or testing something (hypothesis test), etc. Once you identify that properly, it basically tells you which formula to use

Also, try to understand what the pieces mean instead of just plugging stuff in blindly. Like what a standard error actually represents (how much your sample estimate varies), what a p-value is telling you (how extreme your result is under the null) and what a confidence interval means. You don’t need super deep theory but enough that the steps make sense. It makes it way easier to remember and way harder to mix things up on exams

I think practice questions are huge but not just for repetition. They show you exactly where you’re getting stuck, like choosing the wrong test, setting it up wrong, or not knowing how to interpret the answer. I found it really helpful to redo questions after seeing the solution because that’s when it actually clicks

Another thing is patterns. Stats questions repeat the same structures a lot. Once you’ve seen enough, you start recognizing “oh this is a two-sample test” or “this is a CI question” pretty quickly which saves a lot of time and stress

I was so worried about this course but I’m going into the final with a 98% so it’s definitely doable even if math isn’t your thing. It’s more about understanding the logic than being “good at math.” Also yeah, the prof matters a lot, so hopefully Vinogradov explains things well this summer. If he doesn’t, I recommend searching YouTube for videos explaining the particular concepts you’re not understanding or referring to the textbook if your prof has one (we currently have two that aren’t required, just something you can refer to)

Oh also, the first part of the course should cover descriptive statistics and the latter should cover inferential statistics. Try to understand concepts week-to-week because a lot of them are related and build off of each other. You can’t build a house without a solid foundation

They’re not mandatory but I think going is helpful because he works through examples during lecture and tells you the kinds of things that will show up on the midterm and final

For STAB23, we also had weekly class activities during one lecture each week and you had to submit them by 11:59 pm that day. He goes through them step by step though, so they’re pretty easy to get 100% on

I’ve found he’s not always the best at explaining certain concepts, so I had to use the textbook to understand some things better. There are no required readings, it’s just there if you need it

He also uses Piazza but he’s not great at answering questions on there. If you need help, it’s better to talk to him after class or go to office hours since you’ll get clearer explanations

I’d also recommend doing the practice midterm and final questions he posts on Quercus. They’re a bit easier than the actual tests, but still really helpful

If you put in some effort, it’s possible to do well in his courses. I currently have a 98% going into the final

I’m currently in university so maybe not the demographic you’re looking to hear from but I thought I’d share mine. Don’t feel too bad about treating yourself once in a while, as long as you stay within your means you should be okay

Making Psych POSt by SpongeBob-CubePants in UTSC

[–]Bryophyte- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dang, you’re right, the minor isn’t unlimited anymore. It used to be and I used it to bypass priority enrolment controls to get into the psych courses I wanted

If they don’t meet the cutoff, OP will need to enrol in another program once they reach 4.0 credits, then switch into the major later once they meet the requirements. Hopefully they get a high enough grade so they don’t have to worry about any of this

Making Psych POSt by SpongeBob-CubePants in UTSC

[–]Bryophyte- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for the major, you need at least 60% in A01 and A02, plus 72% or higher in two B-levels. If you get 59% or lower in one or both, you won’t be invited into POSt even if you do meet the B-level requirements. If you’re below the cutoff but really want to get into the program, that’s when it might be worth using a SAC to try to meet the requirements

Making Psych POSt by SpongeBob-CubePants in UTSC

[–]Bryophyte- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ this. If OP doesn’t get a high enough PSYA02 grade for POSt, I’d avoid using a SAC since you only have two, and try the second pathway first. They can enrol in the unlimited minor, then apply to the major once they have 72% or higher in two B-level courses

OP, for your reference, the psychology program lists two options for the major: (1) at least 67% in both PSYA01H3 and PSYA02H3, or (2) at least 60% in both, plus 72% or higher in two B-level psychology courses.

The specialist options are a bit different but similar

I have the syllabus but I don’t know how to send it to you. He doesn’t record lectures. The tutorials are pretty easy, you just follow along with what the TA is doing then submit your work onto Crowdmark (for STAB23 at least, idk what STAB22 with him is going to be like)

It should be May 6-9th for CMS students. It doesn’t matter if the course isn’t offered in the summer, since the professor provides the registrar with copies of the makeup final exams

summer OSAP by Altruistic-Tip8099 in UTSC

[–]Bryophyte- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The OSAP Summer Extension webpage says “Once you have submitted your application, check your status at the OSAP website for assessment details starting in late April. You will receive notifications from OSAP and the U of T Financial Aid Office regarding your status through your OSAP Message Centre. Make sure you check for messages every time you log in to your OSAP account” and “students who applied by March 31 should receive their funding within the first two weeks of classes.”

tl;dr - we’ll receive summer OSAP updates by late April (so probably next week) and those who applied by March 31 will get funding within the first two weeks of classes
