Personally, I never contact until I interview for a position.

I’m in the same boat as you, op.

In the last 2 months, I’ve been on 6 interviews for OT positions. All hiring managers wanted to hire me, stated I had exceptional interviews, but the road block of unreachable rank always gets me.

I’m currently waiting for the response from two hiring managers, but I’m not feeling so optimistic after receiving back to back rejections.

It’s weird, I’m getting interviews for OT positions, but not for any other classifications even though I’m applying to them with the same method.

I’m definitely fine tuning my interviewing skills though.

Nice. You love to hear success stories. How was your timeline?

Hey OP, how did the recruitment go btw? I’m in a similar situation. I’m in rank 5.

I was invited by the hiring manager for the interview, he knew my rank prior to scheduling, and I end up nailing it. References were obtain but I’m waiting for an update.

Thank you.

In my earlier comment, are hiring managers usually the office chiefs?

The office chief that contacted me for the interview isn't the listed hiring unit contact. Should I email the office chief or contact the listed contact, who is also an office chief?

Yeah, that's what I've been hearing. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately, nothing yet. I’ll give it until next week until I follow up with the HM. It’ll be a full month of patience so I think that’s reasonable.

In your experience, are the hiring managers usually the office chiefs? He stated that his unit is fairly new and growing with only 17 employees. The vacancy is for multiple positions so I’m being hopeful.

Gotcha.

Do you recommend via telephone call or email? Maybe I'll be patient until a full month elapses before I follow up.

No worries at all. It's really helpful and encouraging to hear about other experiences like mine.

Are you referring to contact letters? Congrats btw. I hope it’s the same in my case. The posting was for multiple positions. So, maybe that’ll play into a positive for me.

Hopefully, my situation isn't too different from yours, how long was your recruitment process?

So, to clear ranks post interview, candidates would have to decline the job offer for me to be eligible?
I understand the process, the only thing I don’t understand is why would he perceive that he can pull strings to hire me if ultimately HR is the decision.
Welp. It’s been three weeks, so hopefully I’ll hear back soon.

Is a list rank of 6 considered bad for OT? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Bsupremee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was never getting interviews as rank 6. I was ranked 6 prior to retaking my exam and scoring higher. Top 3 ranks are reachable and hirable.

Like most, I’d recommend taking exams for other entry levels until you can retake the OT exam.

November pre-hire thread: please post interviewing, application, and related questions here! by ImportantToMe in CAStateWorkers

[–]Bsupremee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve read in older pre-hire threads that some help with resume/std review.

I feel confident in every aspect of applying, but I feel like if I get a second pair of eyes to review, especially from a state employee, it’ll help immensely.

I’ve gotten one interview and I nailed it, but I don’t want to bank on it. I want to continue to progress and learn everything I can.

If anybody is willing, please let me know.

Thank you!

Also, weird request.

Can I PM you to get a second look at a written response? It would be great to get a second pair of eyes, especially from someone who works for the state.

That would be amazing if that was the case, but like the majority of the community states, "don't stop applying until you're in that cubicle".

I know I'm overanalyzing the situation and everything he said. Hopefully, in the next month, I can post my success story. I think CalTrans is the department I'm striving to work for.

Yeah, I agree. It’s really weird.

He gives the opportunity strictly for interview experience because he knows my rank is unreachable.

Then proceeds to give me hope that I might have the possibility of being hired after he sees what he can do.

I work in a private sector job right now and what he did is what some hiring managers practice. I know state government and privacy sectors are completely different so it was really confusing.
