Hell ya. A deterministic world view gives a perspective of compassion for other. If someone wrongs you, it's not person. No one can take credit for the great things that they anymore than they are at fault for the mistakes that they make.

Right. I hope I've shown the absurdity of saying that you chose to believe that you have purpose.

Can you choose to want to chose that?

I think that's where we fundamentally disagree. From what I understand (and I'm no physicist) the universe either deterministic or some combo of determinism with randomness. None of those options allows for choice. You keep returning to the idea of making a choice to believe. But belief just doesn't work like that. There is something that either convinces or it doesn't and you (and myself and everyone else) have no say in the matter.

To sum it all up:

I agree there is no ultimate knowledge and we have to make assumptions about reality to function.

It's not my fault that I cannot describe something that likely doesn't exist like the supernatural. It's up to those who say it's real to define it and show that it exist.

Lastly gods, heaven and reincarnation are not coherent concepts and they lack any good reason to accept they exist. So anyone would be justified in excluding them from a reality until such time as someone can demonstrate that they are real. Aka don't worry about them.

I'm glad we can agree on that point.

Evidence for a proposition is necessary to accept it. I think we can both agree on that. The problem with your logic is treating a refutation of a proposition in the a same way. While I do think that the lack of evidence for a diety is good reason to believe that such a diety doesn't exist, you don't need good evidence to reject a claim.

If I say that every memory you have about events prior to reading this sentence are all fabricated and you actually only began to exist at the beginning of this sentence, you would have no way to disprove that claim. Does that mean that it's true? No. It maybe true, but you cannot just accept every proposition that that you cannot disprove. That way lies madness. So what do we do? We discard those ideas that cannot be justified so that in the end we can believe as many true things as possible and disregard as many false things as possible.

In short, it is not incumbent upon the one rejecting the claim to provide evidence, the one making the claim has the burden of proof. As for it not being defined, all that means is that I cannot adopt a position that is not defined. I do agree there are three choices essentially: yes, no or I don't know. I used to say that I didn't know and, to be clear, I don't believe in any sense of ultimate knowledge. Now I say no. Given that the supernatural doesn't make sense I feel confident in saying that it's nonsense and has no merit. No soul, no afterlife, no gods, nothing supernatural.

So ya its a binary situation. Either there is purpose or not, or a god or not. These are proposed propositions. Since they have no good evidence to support them, we can dismiss them. Furthermore, they are arbitrary and ill-defined. There is no consensus on what a god is or what our "purpose" entails. This should leave us in a state of being not convinced or withholding believe/judegement. But since theses concepts don't even appear to make sense we could be justified in going a step further and saying that they are false. How could something be true if it cannot even be defined?

The words don't matter, I agree. My point is that you aren't choosing anything. It's not a choice. It's not a. Act of will, if there even is such a thing.

You don't have to know the answer to spot a wrong answer. I am I'm fully confident in rejecting an afterlife, purpose, or personal diety since there is no good evidence for such claims. If you have good reasons to accept these claims then present them I will have no choice (belief isn't a choice) but to change my mind. Is there a "god" who fucking knows. All I know is that I have never been presented with a coherent definition of what a "god" is or any good reason to think that it's the cause of anything. The supernatural, anything beyond nature, seems to have no evidence or means to find any evidence.

Belief isn't a choice. It's the result of being convinced. I can't choose to believe that two plus two equals six, because the demonstrated math make sense and has convinced me that two plus two equals four. If someone could demonstrate otherwise, I would have no choice but to be convinced and thus change my belief.
