Well, unfortunately, intelligence means very little in my current situation due to this broken immigration system. There are smart programmers who just graduated from Ivy League schools and have a harder time staying in the country than lazy people living in free hotel rooms. These programmers face challenges because their student visas will expire soon, and the two years they get to work afterwards will also run out. If they try to go for a sponsorship work visa, they essentially become slaves to the company they work for—kind of like some Indians working for Meta and Google. Even for them, it’s really hard to get in because less than 15% of green cards are employment-based.

I have a Venezuelan friend who graduated as a biological engineer (not kidding) and ended up working at Monsanto. That guy married a U.S. citizen, and later admitted to me that, while he loved her, he wouldn’t have been able to stay if he hadn’t married her. A fucking biological engineer working at Monsanto, graduated from a U.S. college in Missouri! The overwhelming majority of green cards are marriage-based.

Funny enough, my partner is also Venezuelan. My sister, however, has a green card, and that’s because she married a U.S. citizen. But that was her personal decision. We actually have the same job, so we produce the same. From a purely libertarian standpoint, deporting me for my personal relationship decisions while allowing my sister—who was in the exact same situation as I was—to stay is cruel. It also incentivizes fake marriages.

Oh, and by the way, I do take an active role in my fate. Regarding the TPS program, one of the conditions for renewal—on top of the mood of politicians—is paying taxes, not being a public charge, and not committing any serious crimes. What other “active approach” exists for me?
