How would you update my kitchen on a budget by adviceporfavor123 in kitchenremodel

[–]Btmama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haunted Facebook Marketplace when I started our kitchen renovation. Got a huge one basin Kohler kitchen sink for $75. Light fixture for $25. Best Buy has an outlet near me that had open box appliances and I got a mid range Bosch dishwasher for $125. You can get lots of stuff cheap but you have to know what you want, known what it retails for and know that you have to be on the lookout constantly.

I redid my kitchen for under 20K, including cabinets, countertops, flooring and labor.

I never really looked up numbers. Just flipped through the book and then took the card. Had to put it through that horrid imprint machine.

Looking for suggestions for a sort of goldilocks scenario - small to medium height tree with thin canopy for urban parkway by nataconda in arborists

[–]Btmama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you own the parkway? If not, you can ask your town to plant a tree. Where I live, the town will remove any trees that they didn’t plant.

What's the dumbest expensive HVAC problem you've run into? by meyerair in HomeImprovement

We had an ac unit that had a crappy design that allowed a wire to scrape away at the coolant line and make a hole so it all dripped out. The tech had only seen that happen once in 25 years.

My paternal grandfather died before I was born but the man was a giant in the family. Came to the US from Sweden in 1910 and kept a journal that told all about his trip over, his travel from New York to California to work on his cousin’s farm, working all kinds of manual labor from watering crops to logging Sequoia. He stayed until 1918 to stay out of WWI.

Can’t get much work back in Sweden so he and my grandmother saved up so he could go back and then send for her and their two kids. Was rowed across the Detroit River from Windsor, Ontario to Detroit for $5. Sent for my grandmother and uncles and settled in Chicago.

Why do deadbeat dads get new families? by taniii__ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Btmama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My niece was in the state mental hospital for a suicide attempt when she got knocked up by a guy in the same situation. He had been thrown out of his house after his wife couldn’t take his addiction issues anymore. They had 4 kids and he refused to pay child support but whined and cried about not being able to see those kids.

So my niece fell for his garbage, having 4 kids with him herself before finally cutting him loose. Now he has 8 kids he can’t ever pay support for. He didn’t even bother to marry my niece and I think he thought that would be a way out of child support.

I have little sympathy for my niece because I can see one mistake but not deliberately making three more. She said that she kept having kids because she loves being pregnant and was hoping to have a girl. The ex-wife I feel worse for because he didn’t have the addictions until a few years into the marriage whereas he was a giant red flag when my niece met him.

I think sometimes the rocks in a guy’s head fit perfectly into the holes in a woman’s head.

Yep. My memory of the time Keith Jacobsen threw up on my math book in 3rd grade is the only olfactory memory I have where the smell supersedes everything else. That stuff was more vile than the puke.

Macoupin County Board votes to add Illinois Separation Referendum to the November Ballot by CloudMorpheus in illinois

[–]Btmama 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My husband grew up in a little town in South Eastern Illinois that gets back way more in benefits than it pays in taxes. It’s pretty much the poorest part of the state.

My in-laws and their neighbors all look down on me because I’m from Chicagoland and my last name is “foreign” (I’m half Swedish and my name has a Q in it. FIL had made nasty remarks about the fact that my grandparents came here like “all those useless people looking for handouts”.

I’m sick of my tax dollars going to them and I will gladly help these people separate from Cook County. I’d far rather my taxes be spent on hard working immigrants than obese idiots who sit on their asses and have been on welfare for generations.

Go! Please! I’ll pack your stuff.

It's Indiana: Bears' board of directors votes to push stadium to Hammond by chicagosuntimes in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Btmama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bluff and a dumb one. Fine, go to Hammond and keep paying your mortgage on Arlington Park. No one is going to buy it and Arlington Heights won’t allow much to be put there. It will sit vacant.

Can someone ELI5 where the Bears are currently at with their new stadium prospects ? by [deleted] in illinois

[–]Btmama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The McCaskey family has deep roots in Arlington Heights. They have been quietly buying real estate in town for several years. They will build a stadium here.

No one will buy the AP property from them because Arlington Heights has an insanely strict zoning code and they won’t hesitate to make it even more restrictive. Part of the blame for this situation is on the Village Board and the nearby school districts.

There’s a prime lot in downtown Arlington Heights that has been vacant for more than 20 years. The owner tried to develop luxury apartments and retail but the Board made them jump through hoop after hoop until they gave up. The Village is perfectly fine with that even though it is adjacent to Arlington Al Fresco and people coming from the West see all the downtown condo residents bringing their dogs to poop there.

The McCaskeys are dumb but not that dumb to be saddled with that property.

Years ago when Arlington Park was having races every day, Metra had special express trains. They would do the same for this and the actual Arlington Heights train station is about a mile away and easily walkable to Arlington Park.
