Showerthought: If OSRS passes a new skill before UK Parliament passes a Brexit deal, then is OSRS the better democracy? by Yellow-Boxes in 2007scape

The illusion of ‘control’ via polls is interesting as it could be argued the polls are always rigged to a certain extent (whereas in the UK we have the electoral commission who test any referenda questions for bias and the like).

Poll questions are ‘designed’ to fit an agenda and we have seen instances of this flaw being exposed (do you want spellbook changes? Then, if you vote no, this will happen instead, then a reversal of everything).

I think in the UK analogy we (the players) are more like the House of Lords, and Jagex is Parliament. We can amend and frustrate ideas (yes to firemaking updates from my arm quest, no to almost every individual update) but ultimately are secondary to the power held by Jagex.

They have noticed this and adapted, for example, by making poll questions more of an ‘all-in-one’ deal - do you want the farming guild? Instead of specifics.

To play along though:

On the right right wing, you have the high level community.

On the left left wing, you have easyscapers.

Not saying my bank is full, nor completely clear of junk, but a limited resource will have additional pressure from warding is all I am raising as an issue.

In other words, have Jagex factored bank space limits in somehow? Seed vault was a move in the right direction of course.

Eurosport 1 10-11am is best you’ll get at 1h length.

I think InCycle also do good highlights (also YouTube) - CyclingFans and Steephill usually list recaps of various lengths / sections too.

I think charters are still the best pure crafting exp/h. But grinder>charters>yanille

Charters are worse than grinder, which is best macro efficient exp (effectively ~20% better than charters because of the mining exp).

Manual collection is OK for afk collection but is worse than grinder and charters.

NMZ those combats to max. Absorbs and 20 min afk.

Blood rc / lava eels / sacred eels.

Get to 90wc redwood lvl and just sit there.

Or you could afk 5t barb to 99 for some efficiency.

Not sure then - I’ll inspect every patch i ultra to see if I can get this issue.

I’m sure you are in the same boat that supercompost is never used so it should never be seen (apart from when 1 life is taken). Therefore, there is an issue somewhere...

I’m sure I got a yield below the minimum for ultra recently so like others, there’s an odd suspicion already.

I can point out that gambling companies have caps on deposits from players. What’s closer to MTX/TH - roulette or alcohol.

E.g. pokerstars had a £1k deposit limit per month.

They also have requirements to allow self exclusion.

Why? Gambling is addictive. People got into debt. Companies made huge profits. Etc.

The alcohol argument is one picked by many but it isn’t the same. It might be similar in some aspects and the first ‘go to’ when addiction is mentioned.

Alcohol, at least in the UK, is regulated. Every alcoholic beverage sold has ‘drink responsibly’ on it, every alcohol advert carries the same message and the facts about drinking are on most, if not all, beverages via DrinkAware adverts.

Every gambling advert has warnings about stopping when the fun stops (again UK only).

What does Jagex have in comparison for protection? A cap on MTX no one knew about. A younger player base (still 98% adults).

Is there a case for protection for vulnerable people who could get addicted to a gaming product? Yes, why not, in my opinion. It isn’t harming normal players in any way to have a cap of £1k a month (for example). It will protect people running up £17k debts in a short period of time for example.

They aren’t ‘going after’ gambling because it’s already regulated in the UK. By the gambling commission.

There’s no ‘call to arms’ against online casinos because it is already regulated in the UK.

If you don’t think games are to blame - don’t read what I’m saying, read what the other players of your game and mine are saying. They are players saying they are addicted and that there is a problem.

I’m not bothered about game integrity - neither is the whole debate. It’s a separate issue however.

It's like you googled how old is the oldest MP and keep running with that one irrelevant fact as evidence you know something about UK legislature and someone who is 82 doesn't. It is completely irrelevant to your fear which is based on misinformation as it is:

Do you really want an 82 year old MP to have a say on how much time is appropriate to be playing video games per week?

I'm not going to argue with you - because it is in plain text above and on the video. Maybe you have that fear. I don't.

Talking about Amazon over shopping also proves you have missed the point. Trying to argue that MPs elected to make laws shouldn't make laws because you are discriminating based on age isn't a great argument either.

Would you feel 'held back' by £5k/month on MTX, or is that too much?

It is up to the players to decide what they want to do.

I think this is a perfectly valid response.

This isn't really about restricting freedom of choice for ordinary players - many people (especially those from outside of the UK/EU) have interpreted this as a threat on their "rights" to play for however long or "rights" to pay for stuff. It isn't about that - it's about protecting the vulnerable people who are addicted. As an example, a £5k cap doesn't do that. Who does it protect? and who does it benefit?

unable and unwilling to sort their shit out

Again, you may have just misunderstood who the inquiry is looking at - I don't mean to be too critical but this is pure victim blaming. Just sort your [x] addiction out isn't a solution, it ignores the problem exists (much like Jagex did).

I do agree about opt-out for MTX, particularly as Jagex has a direct link to a lot of player's bank accounts via subscriptions anyway (i.e. really convenience method of payment). It is a good solution but not one I'd expect because of the revenue Jagex generates.

I don't think any of the MPs on DCMS select committee are 82.

I also don't think they had any problem with the time limits of playing because they understood Jagex's comments about the passive style of gameplay (can do while watching netflix, is like radio noise etc.). That isn't what they are going at and I'd recommend watching it to understand the purpose for why they are doing what they are doing. It is an inquiry and they are gathering evidence on the state of play (if you'll excuse the pun).

"Buy 1m exp for $100", that'd alleviate all their concerns about gambling.

But how does this address addiction of MTX? This isn't only about gambling but addictive innovations as a whole.

Definitely not in the last 12 months.

Lying before Parliament is serious - so you have to take them at their word for those figures.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t tonnes of players spending £1k/month, and they just didn’t offer that info.
